My younger brother (22 y.o) is currently serving a 5 year max. and 3 and half year minimun in a Melbourne prison. We have concluded that if he gets out he'll either be 'instituationised' meaning this will be his life, going in and out of jail or the experience has put him on the straight and narrow. I can only hope for the latter.

So now someones greedy or stupid if they get busted? Its not always something you can control homes. If you have a previous criminal record or are a minority and get pulled over alot of cops won't give a fuck and just search you illegally. Then if they bust you, its your word against theirs, and i gurantee you no ones gives much sympathy to the constitutional rights of people caught with hard drugs or a previous criminal record.

i dont know where you're from loco but here you don't go straight to prison for carrying a personal quantity of drugs.

im half latino, half irish and i hold my head with pride. i certainly dont think for a moment that my situations arise from being just that. disparity in sentencing GOES ON ALL AROUND THE BOARD.

on the whole i would like to think that most of the judiciary are honest people, thats how they fucking got there in the first place. and there are plenty of latino counsel. the biggest issue at the moment is the differances in sentencing between a man interfering with a child and the cases of women doing the same thing. its outrageous.

then again, if she was latino, she would definitly go to jail, right ?

thats what i thought when i got gaught cashing fake travellers checks in india, i shit myself thinking i waqs going to get raped and all sorts, on the contary i was like a celebrity everyone wanted to be my friend invite me for tea and practice thier english on me. it was the best nine months of my life in that jail and i was sorry to leave. ive spent a few months in a english jail and it was a nightmare, your locked up most of the time, with idiots who think their gangsters.

Well that's the way it is, people need to take personal responsibility for their actions.

It is important to note that citizens of a democracy are responsible for their governments. People seem to forget that their government is supposed to represent them. If a government takes action, it is representing all of its citizens by doing so. By this logic, the majority of voting Americans are responsible for the wars the US government wages against the middle-east, because they voted for someone to represent them and make decisions in their best interest.

On the same note, we should also take responsibility for our own inaction, such as not speaking out against injustice against our own citizens (drug laws anyone?).

I was incarcerated in Mansfield, Louisiana-USA. I was the only "white" (my skin's more of a peach color) person in there. I got treated like shit by the guards and police, but treated like treasure from the reporters. I was in the paper for like a week straight and they even had my impounded car in their little town parade. The "black" (their skin's more of a dark brown color) people I was in with told me I was fucked because I'm from up north (Chicago, IL-USA). People have all sorts of reasons for discriminating.
