Phenethylamines How can I purify 2C-B at home?

Can a mod please clean up

Sansert 's spam?

A lot of the responses have been really great and it would be nice to keep the thread clean.
I agree, I do like clean threads too. I can delete the video's but not sure there is a rule break, yet but now that we asked.....going forward we should leave out the synth talk and stay on topic, this way nobody reports this thread again and makes work. I know I appreciate it.

I thought they only listed active compounds, IIRC 1 of the issues with them is that the can't report on strength for example, just primary active compound and secondaries which I assume is really just looking at the biggest peak in the GCMS, so even if the only active compound were 2C-B but the pill is 95% filler, then you've got a shit underdosed pill. Seems underdosing is on 2c-b pills is pretty common these days.

HCI for me, though it's harder to get hold of in the UK
20% grade HCl is off shelf in 3M muriatic or pool grade 10M

HCl can be synthesized via chloro alkprocess via cell membrane, and a mini reactor
here its a mini industrial lab https://www.sciencemadness.org/whisper/viewthread.php?tid=156152

this vid proves a pH 2 acidic solution can be reached (at 2mins in) it just doesnt really discuss the final molarity - im assuming here in 250mL beakers that lil but dissolved NaCl to be below 1
< >

reactor heat energy and backyard way will look like
< >

the above is dangerous af btw

swimming pool stuff way:
< >

sulfuric acid (zep) and salt way:
< >

Assuming you get HCl and need distill and concentrate to azeoptropic point 20%ish
< >

Process should be something like this in theory (assuming car battery as energy source):
1. Electrolyte Preparation: Dissolve 360g NaCl in 1L distilled water to create a near-saturated brine solution.
2. Cell Setup: Fill two glass beakers with the solution, maintaining headspace for gas accumulation.
3. Salt Bridge: Connect the beakers with a saturated salt bridge to complete the ionic circuit while minimizing direct mixing of products.
4. Electrode Placement: Submerge inert graphite rods in each beaker.
5. Circuit Wiring: Wire the electrodes to the 12V power source in series with an inline 3A–5A fuse and a #1156 automotive bulb acting as a ballast resistor to limit current.
6. Electrolysis: Power the circuit and monitor for hydrogen evolution at the cathode and chlorine evolution at the anode.
7. HOCl Conversion: Expose the resulting hypochlorous acid HOCl solution to UV light or sunlight for a week to facilitate photolytic degradation into hydrochloric HCl and oxygen O
8. Distillation Limit: Concentrate the solution via controlled evaporation only up to the azeotropic limit (~20% / 6M), recognizing that further concentration by simple boiling is not possible.

and im not sure the ballast light will keep the 12V from instantly vaporizing everything short circuit style just an idea (prob approx 16-24 hrs according to guesstimated math)

once ya have the 6M 20.2% HCl youd still need evap that at 108C to generate both water vapor and HCl(g) - so now ya need (for annhydrous) a CaCl2 drying tube, which allows the annhydrous HCl gas to form the precipitate crystal lattices (labs use 6M-10M HCl for pills n salts)

so take the egg shells hit em with MAP torch to create the CaO and react that with HCl to generate CaCl2 and shove that into drying tube for annhydrous

bcuz eventually uncle sam and big bro gvot gonna take all the lye muriatic and zep off the shelf
but we can always fresh batch clandestine up some HCl and NaOH with electrolysis (that was my lone thinking)

My bad. Was mainly commenting on the elegance of the mechanism, definitely not a how to but I'll snip that part anyway.
Was tempted to delete every comment I made because clearly, according to chatGPT and JMC an a/b will work best.

No. 2C-B is made from 2C-H by bromination. Contamination with 2C-H means the conversion was not full and the end product not cleaned up enough (distillation of freebase [basically nobody does this], crystallisation [regrettably, basically nobody does this on the market]).
This is all correct.
So is this bromine process the way to strip the useless 2C-H from a pile of 2C-B?
@xdrc is correct. If you tried to brominate the miniscule amount of 2C-H that is an impurity in a sample of 2C-B, you'd likely dibrominate the 2C-B to make an entirely new compound that is called 2C-DB (which honestly looks interesting).

While I don't have actual data, I do think that 2C-H has a higher solubility in acetone/isopropyl. So doing a recrystallization (or a wash as I've recommended for the novice at home) is probably the best as the 2C-H is more likely to stay in solution or dissolve in the first place.

No worries Didgital, I know you and @xdrc know more of the technical talk. When separating the extraction talk (which is allowed) from synth talk (which is not allowed) I have to count on you all. It gets fuzzy for me.

Ok so how do we finish the conversion and clean it up and crystallize it (ipa?)?

The goal here is ultimately harm reduction guys. This isn't a synth, it's to do the right drug and right amount.

I guess there's my answer. Wash then iso.

The distilled water acetone method sounds much trickier for a layperson.

This 2c-db sounds neat. 2cb high is a bit short.

Thank you for all the help. Now somebody needs to try this. Lot of ugly 2cb in the market in europe...

You can not finish the conversion without doing an actual synthesis (i.e. said bromination reaction). Going into more details about this would be against the BLUA.

You have a good chance of removing residual 2C-H from 2C-B by careful recrystallisation (usually in IPA) as 2C-H HCl/HBr is much more soluble in polar solvents (IPA, water, acetic acid, etc) than 2C-B HCl/HBr is.

The amount of 2C-H may not be miniscule. If it's the other 30% that's a lot.

Assuming the 2cb is uncut, what else could be left over from a synth as that 30-40% impurity?

Yah, what if it's Bromine and that is why all this shit 2cb is tan. Bromines bad for you too. Maybe thats why my friend has complained of headaches and being grumpy the day after eating his tan 2cb. Theres gotta be a way to strip the bromine without getting all 2CDB by accident right???

Ohhh dang.

How would one caaaarefully recrystalize? Something other than the boil/dissolve/freeze?

Yes. The careful in the sense that you should give it time and you should not force the conditions (e.g. by addition of antisolvent) to precipitate out the 2C-H salt again. The details will depend on the circumstances (and many many many factors) and recrystallisation is an art which's success would have to be determined by the appropriate analysis methods afterwards.

Different testing organizations have different testing methods and some yield more detailed results.
yeah that was my point

I've just been reading about recrystallisation to wash coke, I was reading that it's done using warm Ethanol which is allowed to cool slowly which then leaves the cut behind in the ethanol, presumably if you cool it too much/too fast then other cuts will recrystallise as well.

is this a universal principle and applies to 2C-B?

my gut feeling is that it's going to be different depending on the drug being washed, the solvent, and what the cut/contaminant is, just checking my radar's right though

Honestly this is a great question which I truly don't know the answer. My guess* is that the 2C-H that was used for bromination had other impurities and those impurities got brominated too. They then get trapped in the crystal matrix of the 2C-B itself, but as they probably don't form a salt with HBr or HCL, they tend to be very soluble in organic solvents while 2C-B salts are not very* soluble in isopropyl. This is why I would say a wash is the easiest way one could improve the quality of 2C-B at home without much gear or risk. Would agree the antisolvent (water/acetone) method is trickier.

If it was residual bromine itself, I would think airing it out would remove the color as bromine tends to evaporate super easily. I've never smelled bromine in 2C-B and the tan 2C-B that I have seen, I've seen it get even darker over time. That makes me think brominated side products are present and are even more prone to oxidation than the 2C-B itself. Once the 2C-B is white, it never goes dark again IME.

I also want to say here that while 2C-B that is cut likely does exist, I would say most of the dirty 2C-B we all see is not washed enough or not recrystallized and the impurities are generally synthesis by products. @xdrc is probably right about an anhydrous isopropyl alcohol recrystallization possibly being superior to the water/acetone antisolvent crystallization. I would be careful though as it involves heating a flamnable solvent. Once all the 2C-B is entirely dissolved, simply let it return to room temperature slowly, the slower the better. Filtering when it is hot could not hurt either.

If it is CUT 2C-B, other strategies may be more effective.

Cooling slowly allows the 2C-B to actually form a crystal lattice of 2C-B molecules one molecule at a time. If you cool the solution too fast the 2C-B precipitates out as an amorphous solid. Impurities can more easily become trapped in the 2C-B precipitate as it is crashing out. The slower you can grow the crystal, generally speaking, the purer it will be.

There are such things as inclusions in a crystal lattice but that is pretty far beyond the scope of this conversation. If you're into such nerdy concepts you can look into Ostwaldt ripening where the crystal is heated and cooled slowly repeatedly. Upon the heating cycle, the smaller crystals redissolve quicker, go back into solution and during the cooling cycle, deposit/attach to the larger crystal structures.

Yeah. Don't bromine vapors burn the nose and smell like bleach? That's gonna be hard to miss.

As another anecdote, I've had 2C-B that was very slightly pink/tan when acquired and looks essentially the same ~18 years later.
