Something I threw together at work.
Now I have been drawing graffiti for over 10years now. Not once have I done something illegal. Why? Because nothing pisses me off more than when some twit with a $2 spray can from the reject shop tags someone’s fence. Do they understand that the house owner probably works his ass to the bone to pay that mortgage? And then some prick decides to put his tag on his fence.
I have done a lot of milk bars and shop walls and have been paid good money too. But I hate the graffiti scene, most do it for fame or to be known. It was always a way to express myself for me, if someone else saw it and liked it that’s fine but that wasn’t my objective.
I have also been asked to write for some of Melburns best crews but I had to decline, Why? Because when you join a crew it normally slips away from the art and gets into street politics.
Is graffiti art?
- Like everything in life you have people who make the culture look bad. There was a thread on Security guards I was reading in this forum, yes
some are pricks, but you don’t hold it against every security guard. Same goes for writers yes some are just a menace to society but others are truly in it for the art.
Most writers either get into tattoos or airbrushing, I have done the latter but never got to the point of providing an income. Some of them if given the opportunity could do very well in life from it, but it still has a stigma about it. Mainly created but idiots tagging fences.
Due to not involving myself in illegal activities, it became that pen and paper was my main medium for my expressions of art. Even the path I took I was labeled a “legal bunny” which implies I only do contracts for milk bars etc. Not that I cared as again I wasn’t in it for recognition.
Also had a mate that was caught at the train depot, he was taken down my a German Sheppard and because the transit cops were so far away, the dog basically tore the calf muscle from the bone, then on top of that the police gave him a nice beating. Then when it came to court time, they had linked all of his work and was charged just over $20,000. Not bad for a 17 year old.
Anyway ill finish my rant.
For people in Melbourne, my all time 2 favourite writers are Rencs and Jaws.
Look them up if you have the chance. Rencs because he had a style like no other and years ahead of anyone else and jaws cause his characters could be put into a comic book. Both of these writers are old skool and I don’t even know write anymore, as I’m not in the game. But even from years ago their work still holds up to today’s standards.
Also anyone who is coming up in the game practice on paper, then when you have your style use a board at home and then go to walls. Like many my first piece on a wall was a disgrace and I had no can control what so ever, but if it’s on a board in your garage who cares. AND please don’t tag people’s fences the transit is fine as it gives people something to look at on the train.
PS – I know some kids are going to say that piece I did was wak, but give me a break it was a 10min job.
Also F*ck Banksy, you want the best in the word look up Cope (U.S) and Can2 (Germany), Banksy your just a bitch.
