Going to Jail / Prison: The Essentials.

Coolio said:
s3xyst3ve, if you spend 8 years in prison you CAN get your PhD dude. I'm pretty sure every min/medium security prison in the country lets you take college classes for free, and most states cut time off your sentence when you get a college degree.

I find that hard to believe and have never heard of such thing. An armed robber gets 10 years in prison and gets to earn a free Ph.D degree? Yeah right. I'm sure it's not the same as a regular degree from an accredited college.

Since the basic idea of prison is in some way or another, to force criminals to stop being criminals, it makes sense to actually give them a way to change while serving time.

Im from jersey and whenever Ive been to jail it has always really sucked because i was kicking heroin. there is absolutely no place worse to kick dope. But i have to say a couple of times i had alot of clean time jail time was usually the reason. But honestly once you get used to the food it aint to bad just boring and if your lucky youll run into all your other fuck up friends and also make very great connects for when you get back out .

Most ppl don't have the time to plan before heading to jail. When I was in there all I had was the shirt on my back. Traded a days worth of chow at a time for 10 cigarettes which I would trade for things here and there.

you're not going to get your phd at any prison i know of. When I was living in a halfway house i know plenty of people who got 2 year degrees and a few who got 4 year degrees in prison. even the local county corrections facility (diff place than county jail btw) offered some college level classes to inmates.

It makes sense for the state to sponsor some schooling for inmates but it wouldn't make any sense for the state to sponsor a phd program. most of the people who would be arrested long enough to get a phd are either
1. career criminals and don't give a fuck
2. people who are going to be incarcerated for life anyway

i don't know if it's like that everywhere but thats what i've found out from people who've been to prison. i've only ever been to jail myself.

edit i lol'ed at the clothes washing thing. when i was in jail the only way to do laundry was in your plastic bin, and then you dried the clothes in front of a fan. so if you don't have a change of clothes you're gonna have a hard time cleaning your jumpsuit. i was kicking dope in jail, so my clothes smelled like shit cuz i couldn't stop sweating for 3 or 4 days.
I should mention that jail is the most unsanitary place you'll ever go in your entire life. This one dude (like 70 years old) had to wear diapers and the deputies wouldn't change his diaper so other inmates had to do it cuz they couldn't stand the smell anymore. another guy hadn't showered to washed himself in weeks (this dude was bad enough the deputies and everyone in the pod made him shower.)
everyone usually gets a cold in there first few days because the stank air and confined living conditions.
from what i've heard from the deps is that the women's side is even worse than the mens. I can't imagine being in jail surrounded by 50-75 woman in the same pod...all having their period at the same time.

dankstersauce, you're right about the PhD thing. But in the jails and prisons I've been in in multiple states, I've always heard from other inmates about getting time cuts for completing their GED, associate's, and bachelor's degrees from prison.

My thought was that exiting jail is probably stressful enough, never mind being forced to do so in clothes that potentially look and smell really terrible.

Like I said, it's stupid and not all that significant. But petty as it may be, I guarantee that somebody in the penal system had to make an official decision as to whether inmate's street clothes got washed or not.

When I'm bored, I get a kick out of digging up these random bits of trivia.

In Australian prisons, a few days before you are released you'll get called up and told to pick out what clothes out of your personal possesions you want to wear on your day of release. They then wash these clothes. If you don't have any clothes to wear they'll let you pick out clothes donated from the Red Cross or Salvation Army charity.

So stfu to all those persons laughing at Eieio's question...

I read some many posts from many of you people about how you buy your dope by the bricks and shit and then you say you'd rather die than go to prison? there is some truth to the saying "dont do the crime if you wont do the time"

phone privileges in Broward County (Florida) jail:
- if you are only gonna be in there overnight you will get your ONE call
- if you are there a week or less (at the main jail in downtown ft. lauderdale), once you are moved up from holding there are 2 (maybe 3) phone times a day. and i think there are only 4 phones and ALOT of inmates (extremely overcrowded) so you better hang out by the phones
- once u are moved to a long term facility (after a week; the main jail is only a short term facility) you are free to use the phones (still only 4 or 5 of them) more often. there are still designated phone times though.

but whats most important is: LANDLINE CALLS ONLY. Unless the people you are calling have purchsed the collect package you will not be able to reach them on a cell phone. You must call a number that accepts collect calls or you will not be able to reach anyone.

something to be careful of that just happened to my friend:

on some cell phones/plans you cant accept collect calls, so if you're calling your friend's cell phone to try and take care of your shit, he wont be able to accept.

exactly.

You know what sucks about that call too???? NOW when you get locked up at the Ft. lauderdale main jail (Last time was 3/19/08 for me, DUI 1st Offense) they process you THAN you have to WAIT until they give you a piece of paper WITH YOUR INMATE number on it, After you get that, than you can enter the number and enter the number of any Local landline you'd like too call.

It sucks, i wish they would just let you make a damn phone call instead of making you wait 4 hours before they get you booked and give you your inmate No.

PS- my buddy who is about to do 25 years MINIMUM MANDATORY (Trafficking Oxycodone over 28 Grams less than 30 kilos a Girl RAT set him up and HE WAS HANGING out with her IN HIS OWN KITCHEN, Than she made a call, 10 mins later there is a knock at his door (some woman (a cop) who coaxeed him into coming outside by saying somebody just hit the red car outside (his Car) They than had a Search Warrant and Found a bottle of Roxicodone's on him HE IS FUCKED), plus he has 2 VOP's and a possession of cannabis charge (under 20 grams), just got his G.E.D. in The Sheriff's North Jail in Broward County, So I know they do that, iam sure they do SOME sort of educational shit in prisons.............. That was JUST county...........

^ When I was arrested in June '07, I think I waited like 9 hours to be processed before I could make my phone call. Then I had to wait 22 hours after bail was posted to be released.

But I got that print-out once I was sent up to the 2nd floor, after I made my call. Do you need to have your CIS# before you can make a call now?

Btw, if you get locked up in Broward, pray you go to Sheriff's North. That's as nice as its gonna get.

next day $20,000

Yeah, he Was sitting at the main jail for awile, Than they put him at the Sheriff north jail until his Trial, he is Jewish, so he gets KOSHER MEALS, Another thing you can take advantage of in jail or prison if your jewish, THEY ARE MUCH BETTER than bologna sandwiches!!!!!!!

Here's what happened to me less than 2 months ago, iam driving HEAVILY INTOXICATED( I was on 5 Xanax bars, 5 Soma's and 150mgs of Methadone) (Dumb I know) through Coral Springs, Next thing I know iam right in front of my house and 2 cops roll up on me saying I was driving traffic off of the road and swerving, so they made me do sobriety test, I failed (IN FRONT OF MY FUCKING NEIGHBORS TOO) than he asked me if i wanted to let a friend take my car, and there was a friend there so he took it for me and parked it so i did nt have to get it towed.

I was than brought to the CSPD, Left in the holding cell for about an hour and in that timew they madfe me do sobriety tests on video and Blow through the alcohol machine (Which was 0.000%), Than they took me to the hospital for blood to be taken and piss to be taken, that took ANOTHER 4 hours, than we went back to the CSPD, and i wasin the cell for 2-3 hours before we went to the Main jail finally (DUI paperwork is a SHITLOAD), so i sit there, than they get me over to the main jail, I went, got my mug shot taken and fingerprints done, than you wait in your cell and you see a medical clearance guy, AFTER THAT (While you are STILL ON THE 1st floor they will give you a small sheet of paper with your Inmate Number on it, You than enter that into thee phone, than it allows you to make your call.

IT REALLY SOUNDS LIKE IT HAS SPEEDED UP THERE!!!!!!!!!!!

I got arrested around 2pm that day and i was Bonded out by 5am the next morning (Well i was bonded out earlier but it took like 8 hours for it too go through) i didnt even have to see the magistrate........... They did put me up too floor 2 in a cell at 2am and their was 2 big black dudes in there sleeping and no other place to sleep besides a mat that was laying up against the wall, i got the mat down and layed on it, THAN I WAS FUCKING FREEZING until the CO brought me a blanket in which case i was still freezing my nuts off.

I got arrested in December 06 for Dealing and Cultivation of Cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of over 20 grams, and possession of under 20 grams. and I didnt get out for 3 days...............

It seems like they have changed it up so it IS a little faster, WHICH IS A GOOD THING!!!!!

PS- Yeah my friend said he likes the SNJ the BEST (With the main Jail or Conte being the Worst), and he has been to EVERY JAIL in THE COUNTY, he WANTED TO GO TO the NBB (North Broward bureau) because last time he was arrested for Oxy he was hooked and he was this time too so he wanted medical care (The NBB is the jail for people with MEDICAL PROBLEMS in south FL Broward County).

Yep, it SUCKED!!!!! The STUPID BITCH was busted for personal possession of oxycodone and in order too get her sentence RAN CLEAN OFF, she ratted out 2 of my friends, one of them was bonded out the 1st day, the other was on probation and has a $500,000,00 (Half of a million bond and a $1000 bond) and 2 NO BOND Probation violation HOLDS.

My other buddy who she ratted out got caught for trafficking also, but a MUCH LESSER AMOUNT he got Trafficking Oxycodone over 4 grams , less than 14 grams, and his parents bonded him out so he is ok.

ONE BITCH WHO COULDNT GO DOWN FOR ONE SMALL POSSESSION CHARGE HAS 2 WRECK 2 of my friends LIVES because she cant own up to the fact that she got caught, i hope they find her and make her go BYE BYE............ :)

PS- and to TOP OFF THE CAKE, My buddy who is about too do 25+ years lent his car to WHO HE THOUGHT WAS A FRIEND, TO MAKE PAYMENTS, they than made 2 months worth of car payments , than dissappeared and STOLE HIS CAR TOO. The poor bastard is in jail than he gets his car ripped off, Damn that sucks...........
