Alright Gibberer's.

Quick question, to anyone who's done shift work:

I'm considering taking up work which involve night and days. If I got roughly 4/5 hours sleep at night, and then 3/4 hour powernap in the afternoon...every day.... will this be as good as your required 8 hours? or because it is split into 2 sleep sessions will the system find it difficult?

What? You're going to work night n day every day? You'll be exhausted. My Dad does shifts n he does say one week nights, one week mornings n one week afternoons. Some people do the four on four off to get their body clock working.

Sorry i can only say what my family do as ive onky ever done 9 to 5.

I'm sure I read an article somewhere recently that suggested that lots of naps was actually better for you than one long sleep. I've certainly never slept for more than 4 or 5 hours a night and have got on fine without a nap in the afternoon. When I worked nights I used to get a couple of hours kip in the evening and that was it. Used to be hilarious fun when we finished on a Saturday morning and all went down the snooker club at 8am (the only place serving booze at that time). Used to be a good game of last man standing by 11am :p

Shift work just fucks you in general I find. I used to work 10pm - 8am shifts for about 3 years, on my first day of the week I used to get up at 7am, get home from university at about 7pm eat then have an hour nap then go to work. It wasn't actually that bad, the other days i'd normally go to sleep at about 11 or 12 in the afternoon and sleep until around 6 or 7. Getting back into a 'normal' sleep routine is the hardest part of shifts, having some short acting benzos around to reset your sleep pattern are a godsend. Modafinil is also excellent if you've had a bad sleep.

3/4 hours is not a powernap and will probably leave you feeling worse, if you want to catch some sleep i'd advise an hour at the most.

I didnt think you slept anyway Raas??

@evey - i have replied to PM's from you, some i haven't, you're not on your own, im forgetful..

That's why I asked if he metan three quarters of an hour instead as I would never describe 4 hours sleep as a "nap".

Evey - generally shift work alternates..... You do do many days, then so many days off then so many nights. Mine are 6:30-18:30 days for 4 days then 3 days off then 18:30-6:30 nights for three nights then three days off etc. (Although with overtime those 12 hr shifts can easy by 15hr plus

Right off to bed. not in the fucking mood. Soon as this day's over the better. Bastard shame ive got to wake up again tomorrow n endure the same shit day. Ugh fuck it. :(

England - not all shift work. My Dad n brothers chamge on a weekly basis. I s'pose it depends on the job n the company.

Raas..I have posted this before but interesting reading-

I have friends that do night shift work-4 days on and 3 days off in cycle. They cope but I would say vitamin D and melatonin may help certainly in the beginning. It's not for everyone. The human body and mind can get used to anything I suppose..sadly in my case huge fucking tolerances to things I know ultimately are going to shorten my life.

Sigh

Night all <3 It's been as really tough and emotionally draining day0-shit going on, more hospital tests and a load more intolerable fuckery on top of that.

Night MsFlo.. hope the intolerable becomes tolerable and then becomes something not needed to tolerate at all... <3

Sounds fun, but I am a strong believer in good sleep. Good deep sleep. I personally hate not having proper sleep.

ok, perhaps powernap was the wrong term. But I'm referring to 2 sleep sessions. Sleeping twice a day and being active twice a day, rather than the traditional once.

As above :)

Thanks, i'll have a readie looks v. interesting. Yes, getting used to it is one thing, but long-term health is the real issue here. Your tolerances do not sound healthy and a little worrying!

edit: wow that was a very helpful link, thank you.

"This range was about 12 hours long, and began with a sleep of three to four hours, wakefulness of two to three hours, then sleep again until morning."

lol sounds like me after a bottle of wine. Usually puts me to sleep, then I get up in the middle of the night for a pee-pee... find myself unable to get back to bed for another 2/3 hours

If anyone's going to try heroin, the important rule is don't use it more than two days on the trot and take long breaks (2 - 3 days off for each day on). Ideally a month or more between indulgences. The longer breaks you can take, the less likely you are to be developing a habit.

The ritual elements of heroin use are psychologically addictive and this compounds the physical addiction.

It's a great stone (otherwise nobody would do it), but it comes at a price for the unwary.

Ugh i hope i dont have another day like yesterday. I hate being on benefits. I need a job. I just kmow i'll screw it all up again.

Every day is long. How people prefer to be on benifits i dont know or what they do all day.

And so fkn tired all the time.

I need something to take my time up.

Edit: Raasy i worked out how to unblock u n I'm no longer Raased off with you - but please no more lectures about forgiving people, eh :D

Morning EADD,

Looks like we're in for stormy weather today. More rain. Yay! :\

Wise words Julie :)

Last time I tried it twice, 2 days apart. I was very tempted to use it the day after the first session but resisted the urge. Was quite amazed at the subtle pull after just 1 session.

The problem with opiates is that if they feel nice, they feel nice anywhere at anytime and therein lies the trap....when would you NOT want to feel great?.

That's why if you try them and really like them and you have a predisposition to addiction........... Your fucked.

Awh i miss them so bad. I've this crippling anger feeling inside n empty feeling. And they took that away, wrapped me up in a warn fluffy blanket n all was well with the world.

I thought my prayers had been answered n i was given the miracle drug. Now its back to all these negative, awful, intense emotions that plague me every day. And the nothingness. Fearing what's going to happen in the future. Ugh!

I wish i was back on them, seriously :(

Edit: ive a lot of family members who were/are alcoholics. My Dad's mam died of liver failure due to alcohol.

Evey

I can releate to that empty feeling somewhat but really opiates arnt the answer. It just seems like they are at the time but the pain they cause in the long run so much outweighs any pleasure.

I think sober me Vs. opiate me. sober is 100x better. even though i feel better on opiates. I am really not. it's all fake-shit.

i prefer the buzz of oxy / tramadol / kratom. but H and morphine doesn't work really well at all for me because I'm weird.

And I am glad for myself i don't have any sort of opiate habbit. Though I'm pushing it with doing tramadol again recently its all good though.

And gl evey I've been there. Lasts even after withdrawals for me. yah an empty feeling. like i don't feel right or somthing is missing. Opiates just mask problems they don't help at all in the long run but make worse. for the majority anyways
