While I don't do fish and chips, I completely agree about about the chocolate. Europe in general, their chocolate is the shit, ours just isn't nearly as good.

My girl went to UK this past year and she said that only a few restaurants had fish and chips on the menu. Every one of the pubs that she went to always had fish and chips though.

And why would it be more popular in London? Hmmmm? When everyone knows that fish and chips was invented ( Much as it pains me to say this being from o'er t'other side o' t'Pennines. ) by John Lees in Lancashire, IN THE NORTH! :X

It's pretty bad that I know exactly what you are saying (in terms of location) without having to look it up. My dad tried giving the family a fun fact that he heard on TV, but he didn't recall if it was about London or not, so I came to this trusty thread to ask. Also, I thought it may be more popular in London as a quick lunch for people that work in the city.

Edit: Now I am craving some fish n chips. Hit it with some malt vinegar, and mmm mmmmmm......

And while I am at it, I might as well kill two birds with one stone by showing another example of how plaques are used anywhere for anything...

Ahh, two Tommys from opposite sides of the pond, posting after one another.

I haven't had any pizza deep-fried in batter, but I love Sicilian pizza. Is that popular over there outside of Italy? We have out regular (round) pizzas, and then our Sicilian (square) pizzas. It's hard for me to not call them pies, but that is more of a New York thing I believe. "It's Friday night, I don't want to cook, so I am going to order a couple of pies."
 
I saw one person posting in NASADD calling it that, and he got flamed for it. It's definitely not the norm, and he sounded like a douche for calling it that here.
 
Don't think we do Sicilian pizza over here either. Is it the same kinda thing as a Pizza Hut deep pan, only squarer? :? It looks like it's kinda the same thing. Don't do deep pan, mostly thanks to Pizza Hut, cos it's not pizza is it? It's just bread with tomato puree on top and really cheap, oily cheese. It's not what anyone Italian would ever cook you, is it?

Anyways, speaking of barely edible, oil soaked pizzas, do you guys have doner kebab pizzas, or is it only people in the UK that would ever get drunk enough to think that was a tasty mid-morning snack?
 
The Sicilian is close to a square version of the deep dish, but the whole crust is thick, so the crust is not that much higher than the rest.

I've never seen that doner kebab pizza, and for the record, I have only done pizza hut or dominoes pizza while completely wasted. No self respecting NYer would actually get that when there are other options open at that hour.

I really like focaccia, which seems to be more of an Italian thing, and I haven't seen it much outside of the old school Italian pizzerias and restaurants. It's a lot more common in NYC, and anywhere else that has it is most likely run by Italian immigrants, or a family that has moved from the city.
 
Oh, and not that this would be interesting to anyone but me and you, possibly because of this very thread I had fish and chips last night for me tea. ( Tea is what people in the North of England call what you'd probably call dinner. 6pm-ish once you've got home from work. NOT the stuff you had a revolution over after dumping it all into the sea. Over-reacted there a bit, eh? Cheap as chips now tea is. 8) ) Haddock in beer batter, deep fried, with fat chips ( NOT fries - chips! ) hand cut from Maris Pipers and deep fried till golden crispy, the whole ensemble served with mushy peas ( You even have them? Looks like Guacamole according to an apocryphal tale re: one of our ex-politicians. 8) ) and smothered with salt and vinegar. It was nyom! :) Jealousing much? :p
 
I'm a fisherman of sorts, but won't get into that here. Anyway, it's cod season so the local markets will all have fresh cod, and I have been convincing the family to have it for dinner. We mostly have flounder or striped bass, as they are the most common fish caught here April-November. I cook them in foil with vegetables, so although we eat fish, tis not fish n chips.

Mushy peas? I've had pea soup, but that's as close to mushy peas as I have had.
