I haven't watched a new episode of The Simpsons in ages, and I've never really felt like I was missing anything.

I just watched the movie. I feel like I could have skipped it and again, I wouldn't have missed anything.

There were some funny parts, but they were more along the non-sequiter lines that made the show so funny to begin with.

So, aside from Bart's penis, Otto toking on a bong, Marge yelling "God Damn" and Homer flipping the bird (can four fingered characters still flip the bird?), they could have made this an extended episode and it would have been just as mediocre.

I guess, all in all, it wasn't a let down like I thought it would be... I just don't think it's worth spending eight bucks to see on the big screen.

to clarify, in my opinion, the family guy route is non-sequitor followed by non-sequitor, a certain "meanness" the simpsons never used to display (making ned into an overrighteous evangelical douche instead of the kind hearted but misguided christian neighbor, for example), and a general sense of "throw away humor."

It's not "MEANNESS" - EVERY joke has a victim - and in the brilliantly-written (although, admittedly, less so these past three or so seasons than in the first three epic seasons) Family Guy simply tells their jokes in a no-holds barred way.

In fact, many of the celebrities they skewer actually have the humility and the SENSE OF HUMOR to actually do their own voice-overs.

If you are willing to remove ANY AND ALL boundaries and allow for painting outside of the lines, I'll think you'll see how beautiful art (in this case, comedy) truly can become.

And I have to admit, the first three seasons of Family Guy had me scratching my head, thinking to myself:

"I'm ashamed of myself for ever having thought that The Simpsons (at its peak - clearly, The Conan years) was extremely likely to be the funniest that animated television would get in my lifetime."

The Simpsons had more likeable characters, if you're into the feel-goodness of a show (and sometimes, as with Frasier, I am).

But for sheer belly laughter, in my book, no show has EVER (other than Da Ali G Show) been in the same ballpark as Family Guy (at its peak, in its first three seasons).

And, YES, out of nostalga, and for the aforementioned group experience, I do already have plans to smoke a few cigarettes and then head to the theatre to enjoy what I'm betting will be one fine Simpsons movie this weekend.

I was unimpressed. The movie felt like an amalgam of rehashed old episodes (the townspeople angrily laying siege to Homer's house; the psychedelic trip; Homer and Marge's marital woes; Homer impulsively deciding to care for an animal, etc.) which were done better the first time. I didn't find the social commentary or satire to be particularly biting or clever, though the animation is cool.

The problem is largely that we are simply oversaturated with the Simpsons. Part of the genius of the show was that during the first 8 seasons the show was continually evolving; new characters were introduced and developed and we loved them because they were fresh and funny. Now that the pantheon of Simpsons townspeople has been firmly established, there are no surprises. It's gotten very stale. The movie felt stale as well.
While everything you've said is true, I think what somebody sees as stale can also be perceived as paying homage. Admittedly, there was a lot of old themes in there, but I came away happy with what I saw (and if I'm honest) a little bit relieved that they managed to make that homage without making a complete mess of it.

I gave it 3.5. Not the brilliance of old, but waaaay above the TV output.

i'll give it a 3.5-4, but lean moreso towards the 4 because i'm a fan.

i thought this movie was just like a really long episode...there were some things that definitely made me LOL. but i felt it was geared more for a general audience and not for a fan, so it wasn't as funny as it could've been. plus, there's lots of stuff they could've done that they can't do on TV and i was disappointed they didn't utilize their freedom.

i don't remember if this was PG13 or PG? if only PG, they definitely should've pushed it to the PG13 max...way funnier there i'm sure.

we got a pirated copy the other day and have watched it about 5x since.....still diehard fans here. =D

Finally saw this at my dad's house this Christmas. I never wanted to watch it, and it seems as though my expectations weren't low enough. I chuckled maybe twice throughout the whole movie. If the comedy wasn't bad enough, the movie made less sense than the Aqua Teen movie (which was fucking hilarious). The writers have really gotten sloppy, using the Governator as president when a satirical Wolfcastle would have been much better. Also, the only part I really laughed at (the comic book guy in maternity pants) I saw days later on Friends (not my choice of viewing). So not only is the writing unfunny, they have to steal jokes from unfunny shows. The Simpsons really need to die, and you all need to stop enabling them.

you thought the aqua teen movie was funnier than the simpsons?

whaaaaaaat? /borat voice

^ but then I guess if you dont find ATHF to be either funny or entertaining then I doubt you would come to that opinion

ATHF had some good episodes and some stupid ones. i was not a fan of the movie, i watched it with my brother who loved it and was laughing like crazy while i was like "what the fuck? is that even a joke?"

Seen it twice and just wanted to add (like others have mentioned) that it felt like an episode from a few years ago that went for an hour and a half...

I still enjoyed it though.
