English Premier League football

Man Utd secure Premiership title

Ferguson has led Manchester United to nine Premiership titles

Manchester United have clinched their first Premiership title since 2003 following Chelsea's 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The result sees United, who have now won the Premiership a record nine times, seven points clear at the top of the table with just two games left.

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It's a fantastic day for the club and fans.

"There was an emphasis on the league and the key was our good start. Once we made that, we never lost it."

Ferguson added: "The Premier League is such a competitive league and the focus and the pressure on the big clubs makes it a focus for us.

"I used to have an obsession of winning in Europe but the Premiership has become a priority."
Once we got the lead it was always going to be hard to dislodge us
Sir Alex Ferguson

The United boss, 66, said United's superb start to the season and the attitude of his players were the vital factors in their success.

"Once we got the lead it was always hard to dislodge us," he said.

"The crucial part was the resilience of the players when we got injuries. We don't have as big a squad as Chelsea but we dug in and I have to take my hat off to those players."

And Ferguson said his desire to stay on as boss at Old Trafford remains as strong as ever. "The keeness and enthusiasm of my squad gives me hope and I feel why should I give up?

"I'm going to continue doing it and I dont know how long I'll go on for, but I'm really enjoying it."

United's first game as champions sees them face Chelsea, Premiership winners in each of the previous two seasons, at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

And United also face Jose Mourinho's Blues in a mouthwatering FA Cup final on 19 May.

Hehe. I'm an avid red and have enjoyed this season immensely. I think i will enjoy the guard of honour at Stanford Bridge even more however =D

The game against them on Wednesday is really important in that the result and the way its played will contribute greatly to the way both teams approach the Wembley climax. Oooh what a game that will be *drools*

You think?

I thought it would be an anticlimax - both teams are very tired, so will rest their key players for the Cup. (If the League was still undecided, then this game would obviously be huge, and maybe the Cup would be less important). I can't see Ronaldo or Rooney starting - I'm thinking United will line up something like:

Kucschyk (whatever)
Brown O'Shea Ferdinand Heinze
Eagles Carrick Fletcher Richardson
Smith OGS

subs: Heaton, Vidic, Saha, plus two.
EVDS, Rooney and Ronaldo not even on the bench.

It's not like Shevchenko has actually done anything at Chelsea this season anyway...

Exactly, Sheva and Ballack are just useless money pits, especially the later so its not really too much of a boost that they won't play. I actually think Kalou is more of a threat than Sheva at the moment. What is far more important is the possibility of no Carvalho, considering Chelsea don't really have any other centre backs apart from Khalid whom is a liability.

Indeed.

Although to be fair, the English game is generally faster than the other major leagues in Europe, so it does take a bit of time to settle in... I reckon Shevchenko and Ballack will do a lot better next year if they are still around...

I agree about the importance of Carvalho as well. I'm not a fan of Boulahrouz...

AmIRiteOrWhat? :D

Forgot about Lee, if I'd thought about it I'd have remembered he could play in defence (and already has), and I forgot about Dong completely. But I got 9 of the starting line-up, with eight of them in position.

Wasn't it sweet watching the guard of honour for Richardson, O'Shea, Fletcher, and a bunch of kids? :D

heh... I haven't bothered to watch the game... I don't think I will. I have it recorded, but eh...

If I want to watch a bunch kids hack and slash at the ankles of their opponents, I'll go to a local Under 14's game.

Ding-Dong battle after limp guard of honour
By Jason Burt at Stamford Bridge
Published: 10 May 2007

There was a Dong. And, once the game started, there was a ding as well. But first the Dong, or rather Dong Fangzhuo who, along with several of his Manchester United team-mates, cut a rather incongruous figure as he walked through the guard of honour Chelsea formed for the Premiership champions prior to kick-off. Even the most charitable would have found it hard to positively quantify his contribution to winning the title or his contribution to last night's game.

That guard was a low-key gathering and started with a chorus of boos from the home supporters which was quickly changed to a chant of "Chelsea". The courtesy was perfunctory, although John Terry did not quite match the look of utter disdain that gripped Gary Neville's face two years ago as he and United performed the honour the first time Jose Mourinho's team won the title.

Then Chelsea were a clear 20 points ahead of United and it felt that the latter were being punished by Sir Alex Ferguson for trailing so badly. It was said that Neville looked like a man clapping the burglars out of his house - a description he did not dispute when asked about it recently - although there was nothing criminal in the way Chelsea landed the title that year.

Mourinho had promised to return the compliment even if both teams' complexions were vastly altered from what they would have been if there was any real meaning to the contest. Not that the United supporters cared. They unfurled banners proclaiming "We're here to take it away" in reference to the Premiership trophy and "Giggs = 9", a reminder of the astonishing number of winners' medals the Welshman has earned.

Giggs was not even on the bench while, along with Dong - a 22-year-old Chinese striker recently returned from loan spells in Belgium - two others were making their first Premiership starts, 18-year-old right-back Kieran Lee and winger Chris Eagles.

The latter was involved in the ding when, midway through the first half, he was the victim of an horrendous tackle from John Obi Mikel, a kind of two-footed lunge that he just about hurdled. It also sent Ferguson hurtling from the dug-out and on to the pitch. Referee Graham Poll showed Mikel a yellow card. But it should have been red.

It was an echo of Mikel's early-season lack of discipline - when he was sent off twice and upbraided by Mourinho for his poor attitude - and followed a degree of provocation from Alan Smith, who carried out a series of poor challenges on the young Nigerian.

At half-time, Mikel was withdrawn but it did not take the heat out of the game. Wes Brown was cautioned for a rash tackle on Scott Sinclair, who was soon forced to limp off - then there was Gabriel Heinze's running battle with Terry (the Argentine was also sensibly taken off) and Michael Essien's dissent as he furiously threw the ball into the turf. And a shocking late tackle by Eagles on Shaun Wright-Phillips. It all resulted in a flurry of cards. There may not always be a Dong but there will always be a right old ding-dong when these two sides meet.

Gotta love the Independent!

Roll on the final:)

i have a question about football in england

when the fuck will it be over?

seriously...

my theorem is that most people don't give a flying fuck about football. but then 35% of them are women, whose opinions obviously don't count to your average offside-rule-explaining 'man and son on the terraces' type. another 25% are men who simply couldn't care less about a boring game played badly by the most overpaid theatrical i'm-a-hard-man-but-please-don't-touch-me primadonnas. then there's the 15% of the remaining 'fans' who dearly wish the whole ugly circus would fuck off to another dimension, but daren't express their secret loathing for fear of being ostracized by their knuckle-dragging, pint-downing brethren.

that leaves, by my gentle reckoning, 25% of the population who actually give two shits about 'the ugly game'. and of that 25%, it seems that at least half of them consider the game to be in a shocking state, with idiots paid zillions to fall to the ground screaming when someone whispers their name. in passing. on another continent.

and to top it all off, for all their enduring talk about england having the 'best game in the world' and 'best league in Europe', their national team are fucking shit, clubs which can afford it can field entirely foreign teams, and it's cause for celebration when less than 200 english fans are arrested at international games.

It NEVER ends!

I mean, the world cup was on all summer and three weeks later this season began. It's impossible to escape from here. When I lived in Spain I maybe saw one game a month, which I went to at 9pm to drink a few beers and have a party after.

I saw or heard nothing of it otherwise.

But once here it was a case of snub half of my mates or go to the pub/round theirs to watch a game.

I enjoy it. But you have a valid point.

Now HURLING! -Gaelic Games- THAT is a sport:D

Amateur players training to a professional level for six months in preperation for a summer championship that draws crowds of up to 80'000.

No faked injuries and no prima donnas!

Love it:)

You're totally missing the point about football!!

Go and read Fever Pitch because it mirrors a lot of what I've been through watching football..

I've supported a shit team all my life because it's where I'm from and whilst not being a particularly proud Exeteronian (or whatever we are) it's nice to be able to represent where you are from at something. Football gave me a lot when I was growing up in both playing and supporting and it builds confidence being part of a team and club. I can't really describe it, there's just an appeal deep within a lot of people which goes beyond your "knuckle-dragging pint-downing" stereotype. And once you're hooked there's no going back.

And now Exeter City is owned by the supporters (who bought out the previous owners) I am a member of the trust with my own solitary share in the club and allowed to vote on who is elected to the trust and club board once a season. Hey, I can even put myself forward if I want to!

Sky can keep their premier league, billions of pounds, crooked oligarchs and all the cheating, diving and hysteria. I'm happy on the terraces with 3,000 other likeminded fools.

Seuss - If Exeter somehow don't get promoted on sunday I'll be coming down to the Cambridge Utd - Exeter City game and taking you with me :D

no uefa thread, so im posting this here...

champions league final in about 10 mins or so!! i think milan is gonna come away w/ it. we'll see though..

Not bad, wrong goal-scorers though. My heart was in my mouth for a minute when Crouch scored, but luckily the Rossenori held on for a deserved victory and sweet, sweet revenge :D

Question: surely Inzaghi was offside for his second goal? Not for the last pass from Kaka, but for the one before, from [someone else] to Kaka? Inzaghi was clearly coming back from offside when that pass was played.

Oh well. Some sad Scousers today :D

^Inzaghi wasnt interfering with play at the time the ball was played, he then came back onside before making the run on to Kaka's pass. I think it was fair Milan took it takin Istanbul into account, 50/50 game on the night tho, which showed up the Pools lack of class in attack.
