English Premier League football

Thanks for posting, that Messi goal is stunning.

And I was about to say to Sim0n's post above that Ronaldo was cup-tied but then I realised you were talking about the other one.

Hopefully as we move to the final stages of the Champions League, some old torrents will pop back up so I can download the ManU vs Bayern '99 final... I've not actually seen the game since that day. Same with Liverpool vs AC Milan.

Newcastle! Newcastle! 0-0!

My faith is restored ;)

Looks like the season is starting to take its toll on the big teams - Chelsea looked very tired, just as Man Utd looked nervous yesterday.

Hoptis: surely there's only one Ronaldo? ;) The one who has actually achieved something in the last couple of seasons (and for a bonus point, is actually called Ronaldo). If I was talking about the over-the-hill Brazilian, I'd call him Big Fat Ronaldo ;)

Glad to see the team i support(Newcastle) playing their part in the title race, guess Chelsea thought we were going to be easy...haha, fuckers.

Ronaldo does PFA double on golden night for United

Ronaldo does PFA double on golden night for United

Cristiano Ronaldo last night became the first man since 1977 to win both the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year awards when he was honoured at a gala dinner in London.

Not since Andy Gray scooped both the accolades 30 years ago has one player dominated the voting of his fellow professionals.

Ronaldo, 22, has been brilliant for United, who remain on course for a Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League treble.

The achievement is all the more remarkable considering the criticism the Portuguese winger received following England's demise at the World Cup.

Ronaldo beat the Chelsea striker Didier Drogba to the award, with United's former England midfielder Paul Scholes third. Ryan Giggs and last year's winner, Steven Gerrard, also made the shortlist, alongside 19-year-old Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

Ronaldo said: "It is a special night. It is amazing and a big honour for me to win trophies like this in the Premier League. I am very proud. My colleagues have voted for me and that is fantastic because the players know the qualities of players. I want to keep working hard and getting better because these trophies have given me more motivation."

Fabregas finished runner-up in the young player category, with 20-year-old Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon third. Ronaldo's team-mate Wayne Rooney (21) was also shortlisted, as were Reading striker Kevin Doyle, 23, and 18-year-old defender Micah Richards of Manchester City.

It was Manchester United who took centre stage at the Grosvenor House Hotel, with eight of their players making it into the Premier League team of the year and manager Sir Alex Ferguson being honoured with the PFA Special Merit Award.

Ferguson added: "When we saw him play in a pre-season friendly for Sporting against us, at half-time I knew we had to get him and I said to [then chief executive] Peter Kenyon, 'We are not leaving the stadium until we get the boy'. I think he is the best player in the world and his season has been incredible."

PFA Player and Young Player of the Year: Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United).

PFA Premier League Team of the Year: Edwin van der Sar; Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra; Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Ronaldo (all Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool); Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham Hotspur).

Special Merit Award: Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ooer... I watched the first half of Chelsea vs Newcastle on streaming P2PTV last night live... nowhere near TV quality but still quite good... I've had a taste. It was good... I think I'll manage with this for the rest of the season, possibly also catch Man U vs Chelsea and sign up for Fox in August.

Well the Newcastle vs Chelsea match was shite... that's about as boring as a 0-0 all draw can be... very few actual shots on goal, let alone on target... but yeah, it was definitely clear that Chelsea are getting tired... it's going to be interesting vs. Liverpool on Wednesday.

But what was good from the weekend was West Ham getting up over Everton!! Two more wins and they are definitely up! One more win and a draw and it's iffy, but still possible depending on results... hell one more win and they are still in it!!

The relegation battle is as much if not more exciting than the premiership battle!!

CB :)

I found Newcastle-Chelsea more absorbing than most games I've watched this season, purely because so much hung on it. Sure, there were not many good chances, but that was down to Chelsea having a superb defence, and Newcastle fighting like hell in the midfield to win the point. I enjoyed that match a lot more than some that have featured better football.

btw, someone should tell the Chelsea fans: when your team is struggling to break down a home team that is fighting for a draw, and you really, really need the points: it is customary to "support" your team. Singing and chanting are apparently popular ways of doing this. Sitting in the stand looking glum is less effective.

^^

Yeah I noticed that...

I was interested in the game because so much hung on it, but the quality of play just wasn't fantastic...

BM: what's your neutral opinion on Man Utd vs AC Milan?

That it should've been the final, both teams have played some stunning matches last time around. I'd rather see those two be there as opposed to 2 English teams or AC - Liverpool/Chelsea.

I can see Ronaldo's pace causing the old-timers some problems; on the other hand, United will have to get the ball to Ronaldo in the first place - Gattuso and Pirlo might easily shut down the midfield.

Definitely, although, I'm not exactly sure on Milan shutting down MU's midfield, that's going to be tough, I think they're going to spend most of their time keeping Ronaldo and Giggs off the ball, for the rest they'll probably let MU make the game, then gamble on the quick counters just like they did against Bayern. I give MU most chances of winning though, just too much class this season.

Btw, not to stray away from the original topic too much, but has anyone followed any other competitions? Yesterday it was pretty exciting football in Both Holland and Spain, Sevilla and Real closed in on Barca again and PSV lost their lead after nearly half a year of being 1st, AZ is likely to run off with the cup now (and rightly so, have you guys seen their football this season, absolutely awesome play year round). PSV, Ajax and AZ all have 72 points after 33 matches, 1 more to go, AZ has the better goal average, AZ (+53), Ajax (47) and PSV (46).

Been watching a bit of Spanish football on ESPN. Mainly Barca and Real Madrid matches. We don't get Dutch football so I have no idea what's going on there, I'm afraid.

Can you get Eurosport where you are? They always have some highlights. I bet SmC knows what I'm talking about regarding AZ if he's a Newcastle supporter.. ;)

Had to throw that one in didn't you?lol I know about dutch football as they have it on Channel 5 sometimes, its usually shit though.

An on a different note if the mighty mighty Exeter City FC win their final game of the season they are guaranteed a place in the playoffs with the final due to be held at Wembley (!!!! I *think* this will make them the first club team to play there..) in front of a likely 80,000 people. I'm incredibly nervous about the final game on saturday though..

You can stick your overhyped premier league rubbish full of egos and too much money. Give me proper, lower league football any day.

COME ON YOU GRECIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(and Man Utd for the treble seeing as they've played the best football this year)

lol, it was said in jest, don't take it too harsh. Doesn't matter much now anyways, AZ has been thrown out as well, by a superior Bremen in the away game.

I don't know which matches you see then, because what I see is great football. You just have to find the right games, games with AZ, PSV, Ajax, FC Twente, Heerenveen should be looked out for, occasionally one of the rest performs great as well, NAC Breda springs to mind, or Groningen.

1-2 AC milan 45 minutes! :D

MU is playing very passively, totally unlike what I expected, AC milan is playing great, so much control and patience, perfect positioning, MU is countering, the occasional outbreak on the wings from Evra or O'Shea/Brown or Ronaldo through the middle, but that's all really, no surprises in their game. Dida looked silly with the corner, but MU's defense looked silly on both goals, they really miss Vidic and Ferdinand back there. Wonderful goals from Kaka though.

Let's see what they do after half time, MU has gotta pull their act together.

Half time doesn't look good for MU. The inexperienced defense is really showing, Evra should take a lot of responsibility for that second goal, basically taking Heinze out to gift the goal to Kaka... hmm... worrying.
