Massaman beef wiv jasmine rice. Had never heard of it before but was half price so gave it a go. Just looked it up and is Thai. Tasted more like Stroganoff to me only with potatoes and peanuts instead of mushrooms. Which is an improvement in my book. Kinda bland though. But not horrid or owt.
Had fish 'n' chips for first time in 20-odd years a couple months back. Was tasty... but mildly disappointing. Yet to find a chippie where it tastes
quite as good as it smells
Still bloody tasty though. Seems oldskool 1/2" thick batter is out these days. Probably for the best. Although I did always have a certain fondness for the soggy inside batter.
I don't think Massaman is really traditional Thai. More like a Malaysian or Muslim dish that's came into Southern Thailand and made it's way onto some Thai menus.
I don't like it much but then I don't like any Thai curries and in the past 4 months of living here have only ate 1 (red curry) and didn't enjoy it.
It's the coconut milk that put me off. Coconut flavoured shit is rank and in a curry it smells and tastes horrible.
Funny that in the UK red and green Thai curries would be considered staple Thai dishes yet out here whilst easy enough to find certainly not an every day dish. Most people I know don't eat them.
Give me a pad ka pow, som tam or rad na any day.
I ate many chippies in the past 20 years but same as you I always find they don't ever match up to the smell and are never as good as I think they are going to be.
Rare for one to get everything right. Either chips are good and the other part is bad or vice versa. I don't eat fish but I like a battered sausage, white pudding or haggis supper and rare you get a place that can get that and the chips good.
There's a chippie here in BKK that apparently is Scottish run and is as legit as a Scottish chippe with the deep frat fryers, newspaper wrappers, bread and butter, sausage, pie, white pudding and haggis suppers etc (maybe no Irn Bru

) but I've not tried it yet. Maybe this weekend.
I had a mutton curry with rice and garlic nan last night for first time in ages. Fucking braw! Today I ate a salami and cheese slice sandwhich for lunch then a spinach pastry with salad for dinner. Boring.
