Fish and chips, but I can never finish the chips from the chippie, so I'm doing oven chips and getting a single fish.

Actually prefer oven chips anyway.

Can't be bothered to cook, can't be bothered to get dressed to go out and get something. Didn't think this would be a problem earlier but am starting to get hungry now :(

Massaman beef wiv jasmine rice. Had never heard of it before but was half price so gave it a go. Just looked it up and is Thai. Tasted more like Stroganoff to me only with potatoes and peanuts instead of mushrooms. Which is an improvement in my book. Kinda bland though. But not horrid or owt.

Fish and chips

Had fish 'n' chips for first time in 20-odd years a couple months back. Was tasty... but mildly disappointing. Yet to find a chippie where it tastes quite as good as it smells :(

Still bloody tasty though. Seems oldskool 1/2" thick batter is out these days. Probably for the best. Although I did always have a certain fondness for the soggy inside batter.

Slander, oven chips over chippie chips? :O

Id do the opposite, chippie chips and home fish, thats not 6 inches thick in batter.

I had a chips, pudding and copious amount of gravy.

Recovering now from the deep fried bastard. Own chips made little difference, couldn't finish the fish, it was fucking huge! And yeah a fair amount of batter but the fish was just plain massive even without the batter.

Might go for child's portions next time.

Translated for the native Welsh-speaker :p;)<3

Me (yn Saesneg) said:
I feel much better than I have been lately thanks, MDB :)

And, miraculously, it seems to be my recent illness has left me with the ability to speak Welsh fluently 8o

Rhaid i mi gyfaddef fy mod braidd yn siomedig mewn chi, MDB. Mae addysgu Sais i chi sut i siarad yn eich iaith eich hun. Rydw i wedi meddwl da i fynd i lawr i'r ysgol a rhoi slap eich hen athro Cymraeg :D

I do believe we've had this conversation before actually. Lots of Welsh folk are not so good with "proper" written Welsh. Don't blame 'em either. Makes my eyes go wobbly just looking at it 8o

welsh isnt my first language, i got placed in a welsh for beginners class for 4 years which was far too basic for me (being young and all i didnt have the confidence and stuff to say this) . Finally a decent teacher spotted this fact, but my welsh wasnt good enough to be placed in the set for the bright welsh speakers, so i was eventually placed in the welsh thickos class. I blame my education. Its not my fault. :D

Looking back now if i could do it again i would have asked to be put in the higher set even though id have struggled with it.

I don't think Massaman is really traditional Thai. More like a Malaysian or Muslim dish that's came into Southern Thailand and made it's way onto some Thai menus.

I don't like it much but then I don't like any Thai curries and in the past 4 months of living here have only ate 1 (red curry) and didn't enjoy it.

It's the coconut milk that put me off. Coconut flavoured shit is rank and in a curry it smells and tastes horrible.

Funny that in the UK red and green Thai curries would be considered staple Thai dishes yet out here whilst easy enough to find certainly not an every day dish. Most people I know don't eat them.

Give me a pad ka pow, som tam or rad na any day.

I ate many chippies in the past 20 years but same as you I always find they don't ever match up to the smell and are never as good as I think they are going to be.

Rare for one to get everything right. Either chips are good and the other part is bad or vice versa. I don't eat fish but I like a battered sausage, white pudding or haggis supper and rare you get a place that can get that and the chips good.

There's a chippie here in BKK that apparently is Scottish run and is as legit as a Scottish chippe with the deep frat fryers, newspaper wrappers, bread and butter, sausage, pie, white pudding and haggis suppers etc (maybe no Irn Bru :() but I've not tried it yet. Maybe this weekend.

I had a mutton curry with rice and garlic nan last night for first time in ages. Fucking braw! Today I ate a salami and cheese slice sandwhich for lunch then a spinach pastry with salad for dinner. Boring.

Yeah, that massaman curry didn't taste very Thai to me... not that I'd know really. Didn't taste of anything very much as I said - kinda bland. I <3 coconutty curries so don't mind that but there was just no seasoning in it - no spice. Mostly tasted of peanut and onion. Beef was very tender and tasty though. Lack of flavour was likely due to being a Co-Op microwave meal but doesn't sound like I'm missing much.

Somewhat coincidentally, I had Thai Green Chicken Curry for dins tonight. Also Co-Op ready meal, also half price. Their green curry ain't bad though. Actually quite tasty for a ready meal. I somehow managed to use the wrong bit of me pepperpot though. Am skint at the moment so using cheapo ready-ground pepper and used the "Dump a fuckload" side instead of the "Shake a lomtick" side. Dunno why they have the former orifice. Why would you want to dump the lot onto anything? I certainly didn't. Had to scrape the top off and bin it. After trying to blow off the excess and getting most of it directly into my right eye, naturally :!

Also, mutton curry <3

Wish mutton (and goat) were more readily available here. Used to eat both all the time as a kid cos had lotsa Asian friends.

Even though I've never liked coconut flavoured stuff I used to like coconut curries until one hungover day when I'd started to get bored of Thai curries yet went and munched one anyway.

Was feeling terrible and didn't really fancy another green curry but forced it down.

On way back to my place thought to my self "surprised with all these hangovers I've had out here that I've no been sick" (pissed every night) and suddenly I started spewing coconuty curry sauce all over the place.

The mind is a powerful thing.

I spewed the whole curry back up whole and it smelt awful.

Haven't been able to eat one since as it reminds me of that.

Mutton curry was good and a nice change as lamb isn't found in Thailand plus the gorgeous Burmese waitress was a breath of fresh air with her superb customer service skills (Thai's are terrible at customer service) but it was already expensive and they ripped me off with bullshit add ons to the bill so I won't go back there even tho it's 2 minutes from my apartment and delicious!

Pisses me off out here. People are too willing to rip you off thinking you're some dumb tourist who doesn't know and won't be back instead of seeing the long term picture.

P.S.

You ever tried Som Tam Thai, Rad Na Moo, Pad Ka Pow Gai Shammy? If you cook then get a recipe and make it. Real Thai food and delicious.
