Well i pretty much agree with you that we should grow up and not need to join organised religions in an ideal world, but it's up to the individual, unless we start banning certain ideas - given that, i'd rather a christianity that engages with the modern world and evolves than not (though we can ban the actions we collectively disagree with).

...

^Dawkins' critiques of religion are simplistic in my view and don't reach the sophistication needed to deal fairly with the highest reaches of religious philosophy, preferring instead to choose easy abrahamic strawman targets. I'm on the 'side' of science, i just think dawkins' arguments, coming as they do from a specific reductionist angle, do a disservice to the whole sweep of science. And he's just unecesarrily insulting sometimes, (mostly to muslims these days it seems)
(also, his selfish gene ideas, which inform his work on religion (as well as modern social darwinism generally), are being steadily undermined/nuanced with advances in genetics/epigenetics, cell biology and complexity)

Love the way Dawkins characterised Northern Ireland as a purely religious conflict. Read some history, you fucking buffoon.

I once went out with a girl whose housemate was a Dawkins fanboy and said I had a 'bad aura'. His bedroom faced the bathroom, and I used to take pleasure in regularly 'anointing' his doorknob with a sprinkle of piss.

religion is all about control, the control is all about wealth, the wealth is all about power. So to answer your question "why are there so many wars as a consequence of religion" I would say because you cant control another make believe system with your own, therefore you cant extract wealth from 'them', therefore you can't increase your power over 'them' therefore you have to kill....'them'

This documentary is worth a watch

The Unbelievers

'The Unbelievers' follows renowned scientists Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss across the globe as they speak publicly about the importance of science and reason in the modern world - encouraging others to cast off antiquated religious and politically motivated approaches toward important current issues - making the world a better place for all. The film includes interviews with celebrities who support the work of these remarkable scientists.

That´s a good one

Jesus wasn't into religion 2000 years ago when He was up against the Pharisees and their idolatrous love of control over the people (as you rightly suggest) and He's not about religion as a means to control now. God is Love.. there is freedom in true love isn't there?

Try looking at it from that perspective. Consider it from a different angle perhaps.

There's an open invitation to have a relationship with God as a son/daughter. If you had controlling parents the thought of that kind of relationship may be a negative trigger..but He's not the mistakes of our parents/teachers/whatever authority figures... He's perfect LOVE.

There are eighteen missing years, but several references to Jesus as a carpenter, which was of course his father's profession.

My guess is that after his bar mitzvah, Dear Old Yeshua became part of the family firm and earned an honest crust for the next eighteen years. Of course, the Apocrypha will fill in a few gaps for you, but I'm frightened to mention the Apocrypha after mister smokes blunts had a tantrum.

so His ministry was approximately 2030 years ago. I stand corrected Thankyou for pointing that out Sam. :)

Pah, why retreat from sharing your views ( as long as they are respectfully delivered)?

MSB is no longer here anyway.

No, His ministry was approximately 1984 years ago, give or take the few years that scholars quibble over whenever a scrap of new evidence comes to light.

MSB could not compute the fact that many texts from the Apocrypha eclipse or rival canonical texts in terms of historical veracity and value. All he could do is say "they were not considered worthy" before beginning to vibrate and froth upon futher questioning.

Why are we talking about MSB when he's not here? It's not nice to. I don't like being discussed when I'm not here (in fact I asked admin to not let any discussions about me take place in my absence). Isn't it best not to discuss people not present or able to participate in discussuon as a matter of respect.

Evey, please give over.

Not only was it directly relevant to the conversation, but MSB's a kind of notorious figure around these parts. He's also permabanned, so we're not discussing a current member.

Besides which, it's been customary to make the odd joke about people when they're not around for years in EADD. Simply because not everybody's around at the same time. It's not 'talking behind somebody's back' - the words are on screen, ffs.

Live with it.

"Why are so their so many wars as a consequence of religion?...

Evey

I don't think the wars really are about religion - religion is a handy excuse for the same old power based struggles throughout history (when religion isn't available some other idea like 'science' or 'democracy' is used instead). To an extent the state religions take the form they do because the state moulded them into their own centralised image to use their power for its own ends (and defuse any revolutionary content in the original message).

This.

I know of MSB, Sammy. I have read it all. I expressed that it's not nice to discuss someone who cannot talk for themselves there's no need to be derogatory. I think from now on its best you n i refrain from interacting as its clearly apparent that we do not get along.

Evey

I'm fine with that.

I'd suggest, however, that you adjust your sensibilities a little, because none of the above is even mildly derogatory. Again, I have to doubt whether you understand the culture of this forum, yet you're trying to dictate to others who've been around here a lot longer.

And you don't know all about MSB, because most of it was mercifully deleted. And if you've read even the remainder of it, then God help you! :D

Interesting response, Vurusl. I'll respond proper when im out of my meeting. Thank you for taking time to answer my question.
