No I liked Animal Kingdom don't get me wrong. It was enjoyable and moving. I was probably on drugs when I came across as lukewarm. Also I've seen so many films about crime and gangs and families involved in crime, I suppose I've become a but inured to it, whereas films like Matewan are very rare, very few and far between.

yeah that was certainly something different, it looks like the original version, there was a Hollywood remake with an identical plot, IIRC it was judged to be 'no improvement on the original', at best.

If you like 'something different' have you watched Pans Labyrinth ? That is very different indeed. Very good also. It's quite strange all round, in some ways it appears to be a childrens film, but it is very dark in places and just too scary for young kids i would think.

Not watched it yet mate, been up all night, too too much ethyl too late on again. Eventually got to sleep this morning trying to sleep off a hangover. Has mostly gone. I had a new experience last night, a bouncer refused to let me into a pub on the grounds that "You've had too much mate." He wasnt wrong. We found a great bar and were drinking some mad cocktails, with about 20 shorts thrown in and you drink it through a straw. Sorry i digress.....

Am i right in thinking that all DVD rental places have closed and been replaced by online ones ? Im a member of Lovefilm, i think they do pay as you go, i will probably do that or it might even be cheaper to buy it on ebay.

Hah that's happened to me once or twice but a long, long time ago. Not for years. I'm amazed that's a new experience for you, it was one of my first experiences when I left the parental home and started going out and getting pissed.

Are you not aware of alternative sources for purchasing your "DVDs"? I know the "internet police" make things less easy but I assure you they've not made things impossible, or even unlikely.

I am aware but had temporarily forgotten that as an option because i will have to rebuild that new pc that you dont believe exists as that can be connected to my TV via HDMI to watch it more comfortably than on a pc desk and chair. Ive started d/l the torrennt anyway. Cheers for the reminder.

to be put in the same "strange but pretty good films" are guillermo del toro s earlier films,

the devil's backbone
cronos

both quite interesting :)

has anyone seen compliance? scary stuff if it is really based on truth.

funny you should say that, as i watched it last night, i guess we both recorded it off film 4. It really is true, there were loads of such incidents reported in the states. Maybe just one or 2 sickos responsible for them all.

Have you seen the Milgram Experiment ? It's probably on youtube.

The experimenter gets the volunteers to administer ever increasingly high voltage electric shocks to a stooge if they get the answer wrong to a question. Nearly all the volunteers administered what would have been a fatal electric shock, it was all just an act though, the stooges were just actors and the electric shocks werent real.

The purpose of the experiment was to show how obedient people are to "authority" and that they will obey orders to comply, even if the orders could kill people. Its really quite scary. I'd like to think that i wouldn't have done it, and would have been a rebel, id probably have been just like everyone else though and felt the same 'social pressures' to comply.

have you seen the film or the experiment ? It really is incredible what people will do to comply with authority or social expectations. It was interesting in the film that 2 of the male employees the police officer were speaking to objected most strongly, and the grizzled old groundsman/handyman was the only one to take a firm stand and immediately call bullshit and fail to comply with the officer. Once he did that the whole thing came crashing down, and everyone realised they'd been completely fucked over.

MDB I think you'd enjoy an american social experiment series called "What would you do?" where actors are told to play out situations and see how the general public react. Loads of em on youtube.

One famous social experiment called the Bystander Effect is pretty shocking, again loads of videos on it. It is usually somebody lying motionless or in pain in the street but people just walk by without helping.

Yeah in china, the video is difficult to watch. There was a case in the uk a few years back.where a middle aged bloke collapsed in the street and didn't die til hours later, but people thought (or told themselves) he was just a drunk.

"Man dies in street nobody helps" into google brings up quite a few cases.

its easy to say that... but ive been in situations where trying to help someone in the street seemed equally likely to get me hurt...

back to films and the topic of the thread...

seen Kickass 2. not as good as the first one. not as funny or as much action as the first. had a bit of a stale feeling through out

yeah sometimes its best just to dial 999 and let the people who are trained to deal with such things deal with it, it is possible to cause more injuries if you try to help without knowing what you are doing. Taking no action at all though just seems wrong though. Its negelecting your responsibilties as a human being.

Cities are weird places though, they are quite unnatural environments for human beings, everyone essentially walks around wrapped up in their own little bubble as there would be sensory overload if you tried to take in everything that is going on. Bodies in the road/pavement though should prompt some form of action though, and it is a more than sad state of affairs if everyone just turns a blind eye to such things. That person is somebodys son/daughter/brother/sister/friend/relative etc.

Exam and Fruitvale Station are both worth a watch.

Fruitvale Station - Oscar Grant III was fatally shot by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California, United States, in the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2009.[1][2] Responding to reports of a fight on a crowded Bay Area Rapid Transit train returning from San Francisco,[3] BART Police officers detained Grant and several other passengers on the platform at the Fruitvale BART Station.
