EADD Movie Recommendations Thread v.4...not for TV series and stuff Dan...

Out of all the films mentioned in the 'year in film' the one that stuck in my mind most was Good Vibrations, the true story about the guy who ran the record label of the same name in Northern Ireland; The Undertones were the most famous band on the label. I can imagine the film being about their joy when John Peel discovered Teenage Kicks and proclaimed it his favourite track ever and started playing it to death, really breaking the band, i imagine thats how the story will go.

Side Effects - interesting movie, id recommend it, but not sure as what. probably a psychological thriller with a dash of politics in there at the beginning bit. been some time since a movie surprised me in its plot and direction.
probably a solid 7/10

Just watched that recent Schwartzenegger film The Last Stand. Dunno why I bothered really. Bit of a whim. I'm sure anybody who would wish to see such a thing already has but for anybody undecided, don't bother cos it's shite.

Got loads of films need watching. Am a bugger for just getting stuff cos somebody recommends it, or I have one of me whims, and then never get around to watching any of 'em. Or if I do I watch 'em so pissed I don't remember watching 'em so have to keep hold of 'em to try again in more sober state. Might see if I can have a bit of a clear-out this week. Got a few that look properly good. And plenty mindless shite to fill in the gaps, naturally :D

I find this a good mix too, a mixture of proper, quality films and a bit of mindless shite.

There is one positive about watching films too pissed to remember them, or too benzoed in my case, and that is that you get to enjoy them like watching them for the first time twice. I found this recently with Taken and Man On Fire, both absolutely brilliant films that i had seen before, but could barely remember anything about them due to being so benzoed first time i watched them.

Both films are atleast 9.5 out of ten, really absolutely top notch, honestly, you couldnt fail to like them, if youve not seen them before. Such exciting, engrossing, violent, action films, not mindless either, infact not mindless at all. There is some proper depth to both films.

So you mean they're deeply violent mindless films or deeply mindless violent films, MDB? ;)

Don't object to either (or even what you actually meant) when of a mind so will look up recommendations when I've cleared some stuff :)

In clearing stuff news, also watched the new Riddick film last night and it's not bad. Bit too similar to the first to be properly good but seems to be an extended set-up for another planned sequel as the end (don't worry, no spoilers) is left pretty much begging for continuation. Wouldn't call it deep but it is plenty violent and much fun.

no i meant there is a proper plot to them, especially Man On Fire, that would stand the highest critical scrutiny IMO. Taken maybe a litlle James Bond like and far fetched in parts, but no where near as extremely ridiculous or corny, its quality, much tougher and harder and more brutal than james bond, theres no slapstick shit. Its so exciting and fast paced you tend not to notice the slightly far fetched bits, or even be that critical in mindset IMO at least, its just sheer enjoyment, lets just say the violence is dished out to those who had it coming.

I'm hoping Man On Fire is 90 minutes of a man on fire desperately trying to put himself out but failing because there is a drought and hosepipe ban on and he has to kill people and collect their blood to quench the flames.

Just looked it up and... well... Walken <3

I think technically a Walken balances out Washington. Only just though. Can't stand bloody Denzel Washington for some reason. Never quite put my finger on it but just don't like him (as an actor - I'm sure he's lovely really) and rarely like his films either. But... Walken <3

=D

...i believe you will find ol Dennie very likeable and human...

That's it! It's the "not-very-humanoid" thing. The man appears to be some kinda cyborg. Or just a bad actor. He only seems to play one character and I don't happen to like that character. Not as bad as Forest Whitaker (for some reason I tend to get those two mixed up sometimes... hopefully not just cos they iz black cos I am aware there are more than two black actors in the world, but I do get the two confused all the same) who was in that Schwartzenegger film. His single character really does get on my tits :!

Have you seen The Last King Of Scotland ?

Forest Whitaker plays a terrifying psycopathic Idi Amin, it's a brilliant film.

I know what you mean about just disliking certain actors though, i used to feel that way about Nicholas Cage and still do about Jim Carey. Cage eventually won me over in some film or other, cant remember which one, but Carey, i just cannot even stand the sight of. :|

Ah yes. I knew I'd seen him in summat that I liked Forest Whitaker in cos I was so surprised at liking him in it. He really was excellent in that. Other than that, the rest of his roles are but a blur of scowls, mumbling and temper tantrums. And I totally agree with Jim Carey - absolutely loathe him. But even he made one or two properly good films (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show were both great, in my opinion). I get what you mean about Nick Cage too - he's the classic "most hated actor" it seems. I think he's great though - cos he seems very self-aware to me. Like he knows damn well that he's making vintage cheese day in, day out. Although the few bits and pieces I've heard about him as a person suggest he absolutely doesn't realise and actually does take himself as seriously as he absolutely shouldn't do, I remain hopeful that he's putting that on cos the stories I've heard (was one about only eating things that had no face that tickled me).

I liked the Truman Show, the only film of his that i did, i think out of the others i tried, i had to switch them off well before they ended as he just wound me up too much.

Isnt it strange how we have simillar tastes, or maybe not that strange given our shared interests, we may be a certain "type" on here i guess; ie 'slightly' anti-authoritarian & i would think it fair to say we all hate the daily mail and it's priggish values, etc etc etc

I can't stand stretch-face either but Spotless Mind was excellent.

I don't understand the Cage hate but that's probably because I've not seen many of his films, despite the rate he churns them out. He's really good in Matchstick Men anyway. And he doesn't seem to be a scientologist!

Yeah, it's actually a Richard Pryor biopic.

Can't stand bloody Denzel Washington for some reason. Never quite put my finger on it but just don't like him (as an actor - I'm sure he's lovely really) and rarely like his films either.
This would read much better as:
Not to be racist, but I can't stand bloody Denzel Washington for some reason. Never quite put my finger on it but just don't like him (as an actor - I'm sure he's lovely really) and rarely like his films either.

Maybe it's my age, but I love Jim Carrey. The Mask (which also has Cameron Diaz looking so good you'll wank like it's 2010 and you're smoking bulbs of MDPV), Liar Liar, Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, these are films that I will love forever, no matter how shit they may actually be (Dumb and Dumber isn't though, a lot of the comedy is a lot cleverer than they are).

Anyway, I had a point. My cousin is a drama student and as a late Christmas present I'm putting together a USB stick full of the best adaptations of plays I can think of. Got Al Pacino as Merchant of Venice (anyone seen this? I pissed myself the whole way through, he seems to have heard "you're playing a Jew" and decided that means a Woody Allen impression is in order), Henry V with Branagh, Patrick Stewart's Stalinist Macbeth, Waiting for Godot with McKellen and Stewart, Rozencrantz and Guildernstern are dead with Tim Roth and Gary Oldman, anyone got any obvious ones I'm missing out on? (I know Mel Gibson is a great Hamlet, but I only have 16GB here)

Yeah maybe it is an age thing with Carey, maybe his target audience is a younger generation than the one Im in and thats why i find him so irritating, im not entirely convinced though, even if i was 7 years old im not sure if id like him. Its not just that i find him infantile, but i find him an annoying pratt.

Anyway erm sorry, where were we, err plays :? What :? Far too cultured and posh for me unless a teacher made me watch them Im afraid.

Cunts don't like Denzel Washington?
