2010 World Cup, South Africa

perhaps there is some antipodean humour at play here of which i am ignorant but australia don't play italy in the group stage, maz. it was new zealand who drew 1-1 with italy...

alasdair

lol, For some unknown reason Australia has for many years claimed any kiwi notorary as our own and proclaimed them as Aussie.

The kiwis know when they have made it in the world when Australia calls them Australian and takes pride in there achievements.

Hence our socceroos had a brilliant draw with Italy a few nights ago.

One day the kiwis will get to the world cup. But they will never be succesful. For if they become succesful then they are actually Aussies.

Exactly....Maz listed a number of New Zealanders who have become famous after moving to Australia (and were subsequently claimed as Australians) and then went on to a few (like Sir Edmund Hillary) who were never claimed as Aussies at all....pretty funny comment in context :D [also plays on the Sydney Morning Herald headline after we played Slovakia: "Australasia 1 Slovakia 1" (Australasia being the term for Australia and nearby islands like NZ....)]

Given that the Aussies hate Italy after the last world cup, I think a lot of them were pretty damn happy to see us take the draw :)

Actually IJ, I was not aware that the SMH had made that headline but yes its typical of how things are done and I truly cannot explain why. Quite silly really.

Oh and very nicely done on picking up the furfy amongst those listed in Sir Edmund. Your correct, he was never claimed to be Aussie.........welllll not to my knowledge. But why let that get in the way of the opportunity to add a little extra humour to the post....lol.

Not bad, but in the 'digging up old wars in discussion of football matches' stakes it appears the NY Post could learn something from the English. I can't find it online, unfortunately, but the classic was the cover of the Daily Mirror before England played Germany in the European Championships (like the world cup but only for Europe...): "Achtung! Surrender! For you, Fritz, the Euro 96 is over!", with pictures of two England players in WW2 uniforms :D.

Was a good game - Aus vs. Srb

Wonderful strike from Holman.

Unfortunately Germany couldn't do us a favour by either smashing the shit through Ghana or losing to them ;) 1-0, just not good enough ;)

At least we put in an impressive performance in the 2nd and 3rd games, and especially in the 3rd showed what we can do when we aren't reduced to 10 men...

Awful to be out of the cup, but at least we went out on a win :)

Landon Donovan's goal.... now I don't want to take anything away from that goal and what it meant for team USA. What I don't understand is all this talk on how Donavon is 'the American hero'. Really? Hero? That goal was given to him on a silver platter. Anyone could have made that shot. Shit I could've made that shot. If he would have missed, that would have been pathetic. He didn't even play well the entire game, or the last two games. And not only that but this goal was just to make it to the next round, in my opinion that's kind of a joke. If this was in the middle of the game it wouldn't be this big of a deal. Don't get me wrong, I am happy USA made it past the group stage, and in that fashion it was pretty sweet. But all this craziness, for beating a crappy team (which we should have beat by more), just to get out of the group stage, for a pretty easy shot, I just don't understand it. A lot of countries would see just barely making out of the group stage a failure especially in not the toughest of groups. In my opinion you're not a soccer hero (especially national hero) until you take your team to the promise land and score the game winning goal. Anyone agree? Or disagree?
