2010 World Cup, South Africa

It was a good game, had a decent ebb and flow to it, I thought. Ghana completely dominated early on, but the US recovery was quite impressive. Brave decision to make a tactical substitution after only 30 minutes, as well. Good refereeing too. Shame one side had to lose.

Oh dear...Oh dear...so so bad, what a terrible moment, made Germany look amazing, worst defending i have ever seen.

yep - the english defence was very porous today. germany showed clinically why they deserve to move on and england deserve to go home.

alasdair

the whole team really, not just the defence: aimless balls forward (why play long balls to Defoe, who's about 5'6", when you've left out Heskey, the one player who'd be any good with that sort of play?). Aimless shots from distance. An inability to play basic passes. Just terrible.

LOL: Gerrard is on TV saying he felt England had control at certain times, including when it was 2-1 (to Germany...). Self-deluded and overpaid losers.

I'm still amazed Dafoe was brought off and replaced with Heskey when we badly needed goals? The man's an incompetent oaf who can barely run the length of a pitch without tripping up over his own bootlaces.

Terrible decision by Capello - especially given that the wide players needed to make Heskey remotely effective simply weren't on the pitch. Not that it would have mitigated against the shittiest defending I've ever seen from an England team. I mean, truly, it was awful. Embarrassing. Terry was all over the place, barely in the correct position when Germany were on the break. The man's been a disgrace both on and off the pitch and should have lost more than his captaincy. I hope he has the dignity to keep his mouth shut and slink back to his overpaid Chelsea gig.

Upson hasn't been playing in a competitive West Ham team for ages, looked ragged and his goal doesn't make up for the fact that he looked like he'd been parachuted into the team at the last minute. Johnson was bollocks, despite having a decent game against the powerhouse of Slovenia. Ashley Cole was a nobody. Barry was a joke, Rooney looked like he was defeated before the game even began, and Gerard's been played out of position by Capello for the entire tournament.

The team consistently looks a yard short on pace. Their attacks are slow, cumbersome and easily defended against. How many times do we need to watch England fannying around in the final third of the pitch, passing the ball to eachother while the opposing team piles defenders behind the ball, only for some England player to pass the ball to an invisible 12th player that only they can see? Total shit.

England are seemingly incapable of mounting any convincing break attack. They play with no vision, intelligence or anything that comes close to mustering an incisive pass. They were pulled all over the place and had no discipline in maintaining their formation. It's totally, totally unacceptable at this level to have your defense stretched in the way that England's were. The size of the gaps in the centre of England's defense were matched only by the weight of Terry's misplaced and deluded ego.

To me, there appears to be a team of individuals, but nothing close to a proper team. In all four games, they looked like they'd never played together, as if they didn't know where the next player would be. No anticipation or communication. Nothing to suggest that they'd ever developed a team mentality or instinct. Perhaps that's down to Capello arseing around with the line-up, perhaps it's due to the fact that they're over-paid fairies who care more about their club football than they about their national call up?

For me, at least two-thirds of the team need to be told that they will NEVER wear an England shirt again in their careers. Get rid of the laggards and big-mouths and start again with players that are perhaps not tabloid darlings, but are at least in form and have the mental fortitude to play with the style and pace that they would in domestic matches. Instinctively, I'd suggest that Capello needs to be replaced due to the frequency and magnitude of tactical and managerial errors he's made... but who'd replace him? Christ... who'd want the job?

Better to work with him and get rid of the garbage on the pitch in the process.

If Argentina wins the whole shebang (and I think they've got a very very good shot at accomplishing just that), then begrudgingly, I shall concede that Maradona might very well be the most successful coke-head of all time.

Wasn't there a lot of talk of Martin O'neill a while back? Keep in mind... I'm nowhere near as immersed in the English side of things as you are, but I remember his name being tossed around a bit for the quality of play at Villa. Is that legit or just rubbish?

I am sooo happy with this world cup.

Thus far the teams that have deserved to move through seem to have done so. Mind you I would have been equally happy with the USA going through had they beaten Ghana.

Italy deserved what they got as did England. I liked Mexico early performances but the Argies deserved it.

Its looking more and more like a South American world cup.

Either Argentina or Germany to play either Portugal or Brazil. It would be great to see a new country win it in Portugal but I will be happy provided its a team that has earnt respect such as Argentina has.

Speculative. He was linked with Man Utd and a couple of other clubs.

I wouldn't be averse to having O'Neill at the helm. He's a hardass, a true disciplinarian, but I'm not certain that's necessarily what England need. They need someone who is headstrong and is prepared to drop players if they're out of form but, more importantly, someone charismatic who can build the morale and team mentality that was so badly lacking.

Gah. I don't know why I care so much, particularly as the game against Germany went exactly how I expected it to: England need the threat of a firecracker going off in their underpants to get motivated, they get one in the form of two embarrassing concessions, rally with some 'plucky' goals, then get their arses handed to them by a proper team.

The papers today are absolutely ripping into them. Quite rightly, too. But they're as much to blame. The disproportionate expectations have been built on results against the likes of Kazakhstan, Andorra and Belarus.

ooooh Portugal - Spain tonight!! That'll be a CRACKER of a game :)

I like both teams, but would LOVE to see Spain win just to watch Cristiano Ronaldo have a cry ;). If he wasn't such a massive dickhead I'd like him more. His skills are sublime, but he is such a petulant child at times on the field.

Yeah man, the Portugal/Spain game will be great. I too vote for Spain winning that one but - I just have a feeling it's not going to be that easy.

The Argentina vs Mexico game was almost EMBARRASSING, I think. They brutalized the poor things.

Agreed 100%. I wish he would just step up and not be so fucking selfish and conceded and played the game like a team player and CAPTAIN! Portugal would be such a better team.

Although Spain is our biggest rival so I would love to see them cry and go home for good. ;)

Thanks for clarifying about O'neill, tamourine-man. I knew I'd heard talks, but wasn't sure how relevant they were. I agree though that the English need to reconsider the way they construct their team. It was like an all-star team, you may have the best players in the country, but they don't necessarily make for the best team.

From this point on, though, I'll be pulling for the young German team. They play some brilliant fußball when they're working as a cohesive unit!
