2004 Mushroom season( Victoria)

sorry iam new to this, dunno weather i should be asking it in here or not but, is it ok to keep fresh mushies in a paper bag just in my room? or would they just turn to shit after a while and lose potency? i cant really keep them in the fridge or dry them properly in my situation -_-

they will turn to jelly eventualy (2-4 days) so your best bet is to dry them in a covert way. I find if you just sit them in a high (top of a shelf etc) area out of sight they will dry properly. Im glad I have my own house!!! I dont think I have enough shelves any more!!!

hmm,. mongman: you mean just sit the mushrooms themselves on a shelf (not being in anything) ? i have a shelf in my cupboard so thats out of sight =D

yup, not in anything. Once they are almost dry you could put them in some tupaware with some of those "silica saché things" that come in vitamins etc. That will suck out the rest of the moisture. Then store them with new silica saché's in a jar and your sweet. (just make sure they snap when you apply preasure, this will test to see if they are complely dry)

note: the last part to dry will be the "nipple" in the midle of the cap.

thanks for the information, if i dont get around to doing this(it is a bit risky for me to leave shrooms lying around anywhere) and just leave them in the bag, would it be dangerous to eat them if they do go bad? or would i just not get any effects? the person who got them for me said if i just leave em in the bag theyll eventually dry. Maybe if i leave the bag wide open just sittin in my cupboard?

They should be OK, however if they get bugs in them (some alread have bugs when picked) they could eat the entire mushroom before you get a chance. Im still trying to get my head around how some bug can eat more than 5 times its own body weight in mushrooms without "bugging out" and going to the bug hospital!! hehehe

Dude, the bugs that reside inside the umbo of a p.sub are no longer within our realm of consciousness ;)

I recently saw some maggot-like animals inside the umbo of an older mushroom that could have started the process of decay. They were white and were only found when the mushroom was dry. Does anyone know what kind of bugs these were, if they were in fact maggots, and why are they found in the umbo?

Last season i had serious maggot issues. Thousands of the bastards, thoughout the whole season.
They definatley look like maggots of some bug. Much too big for a fly I think, but not sure.
They start off as those tiny black dots you'll notice under the 'umbo'. My guess to why they're there is because it's moist, protected, and most of all full of nutients... whether they enjoy the psilocybe... we may just have to eat mushrooms oursleves and talk to them about it :)

Be really careful with slightly bad mushies/ bug/ maggots/ - I've given myself a really bad case of diarrhoea through accidently eating mushrooms with a few bugs. Diarrohoea that begins after eating mushrooms great recipe for extreme paranoia 8(.

Mates of mine who have an ant farm, put nature to work to make sure there no sneaky bugs/ maggots living in their mushrooms. They place the mushrooms near the ants and within a couple of hours there are no bugs (or eggs!) to be found (and the ants will be nicely fed :) These people always store their mushrooms in honey and I have seen bugs hatch in honey many a time, yet they have never had a single bug all of their beautiful honey.

Without the joys of an ant farm on hand, I'm trying to find another way to kill/get rid of the bugs, as I'm finding them even in young mushrooms who's veil has only recently broken. Any ideas?

Can anyone here comment on the toxicity of Calcium Chloride? I had filled a tea bag with it to keep my goods dry and the damn thing broke. Its either gonna be a long process of removing each individual ball, or a healthy stash lost.

:( :X :( :X

Hehe, damn :\

Miss Slingshot - I don't see how ants could help get rid of the maggots that live inside the mushroom, as there's no way for them to get in, you only see them if you cut the mushroom in half longways.

As for eating the bugs, i've read on the shroomery many a time that it shouldn't be a problem, just extra protein ;)

yup ive had a few little bug larva in my shrooms.. they are pretty disgusting but me and a friend reckon the would contain traces of psilocybin.. so apart from being psychoactive.. they add a bit of protein to your diet..

^ Oh OK, the bugs/ eggs I've seen have been on the outside of the mushroom, generally in between the gills, hence allowing the ants to get in. As I haven't cut a mushroom in half lengthwise to see what beautiful buggy delights await, I'll take your word for it (I REALLY don't think I need to see them). Its also good to know something else must have caused my extended re-acquainting period with the bathroom.

hehehe, yeah the more mature specimens can be REALLY icky on the inside, the rot scares me off more than the bugs, I tend to discard any with severe rot on the inside.
