2004 Mushroom season( Victoria)

Tabernacle- 've noticed that in the last week a lot of spots have been very dry.... maybe it has been too humid?

Go back tommorow cos we've had a cold day and rain and now the sun is shining. Also maybe consider going a little further east if you not getting any luck closer to the city ;)

peace

Tabernacle: I know that at some "parties" held in the area over the last few years shrooms have been found if you only wander a short distance from the sound system. So I think its the weather, I just checked some ultra high secret patches and found nearly no mushrooms where there should have been 100's so I suspect the weather. All the city mushrooms I have found have been completely blue/green two which is a sign of wind and sun burn then a little rain. So the long ang short of it is that its probly the weather.

Tabernacle - I too have found mushrooms in same area, although I've found it has to be absolutely perfect 'mushroom weather' - i.e. really cold and lots of rain, in order for any hunts to be successful. If it makes you feel any better I've been searching there pretty consistently for the past month and haven't anything for this season yet (well lots of other really cool mushrooms but no p.subs).

Keep following that bending thing east, east east =D

I just went on a mini-hunt to check the usual spot and came across two very dodgy looking guys (What I must look like also when hunting, I imagine :)) crashing through the bush. It was extremely obvious what they were doing, so not being the shy type I've yelled out "MUSHIE HUNTERS!!!". Well, you shoulda seen 'em shit! It was pretty damn funny! :)

Anyway, we ended up having a chat about the spot, hunting in general, other good spots and stuff like that. It was interesting, they have been having less luck than I have all season, so it made me feel good! =D

I only found 3 subs, but I am rather sure that the spot I'm going to cannot support the amount of people who are obviously picking it dry:(. I think I'm going to have to find super secret mushroom area 51 or something like that.

/\ absolutly beautiful mature subs there bro :)

and hardicus.... seems like you've created a panthiestic bond with the mushies this season ;)

^^ Strange how the bush variety always seems to be a lot more yellow than the city variety. At least out in the bush you tend to find some nice mature specimens, not so likely in the city with so many people raiding the patches to early.

wow, is cowboy mac's mushies a p.sub?
sorry im new to this, its funny the other day just walking through the bush on my way home, found some brownish/kinda yellow cap mushies with a rusty sort of stem neva thought of it to be a p.sub. should i go back and take a proper look under the microscope?

^^Well, Im no expert by any means, but that's what the ones I pick, eat and trip on all look like. I pick 'em out in the sticks, so maybe the city ones do look alot different.

Just a quick question. I have been picking P.subs and when leaving overnight to spore print, I sometimes get like a chocolate brown spore print, most of the time in more mature specimens. Has anybody else seen this?

Does anyone know if P. Subs can have macroscopic variations to the point that the gill attachments can be free in one specimen and adnate to adnexed in specimens from a different patch? Or are they more likely to be another species?

that is normal. All my spore prints seem to be a chocolate sort of colour

I'm not very educated in mushroom picking so humour me with an answer.
I thought you look for blue brusing and purple spore prints for P. Subs?

Also are there any other tests apart from visual, buising and spore prints to identify active mushies from the nasty ones?

Technically sub spores are meant to be purple, but i've found that most of mine are browny-purple, there was a thread recently on the shroomery to the same effect. Try taking a print on alfoil and chances are it'll look more purple.

colour is a bit like that, very hard to quantify from person to person. Espesialy with spore prints when the difference may be very subtle.

Cheers mongman and miss slingshot, i dig what you're saying :). 'Sound system' that's great, might look around that area although there's more hippies over that side of the area and any subs are prolly long gorn.

Yeah man, last year i picked tonnes in the city subburbs and they look MUCH different. THe stems are always real white, the cap is a lot darker and they tend to grow in bigger patches. A few different varities in the city actually, however, none of them really look like the ones out in the sticks.

This year I've found bugger all in the suburbs so I've been out bush getting them and i must say the can look quite different, the stems often rusty at the bottom and on the more mature specimens rusty nearly to the top of the stem. THe baby ones seem top have pure white stems though. And the caps can be almost bright yellow on some, certainly a lot lighter colour than the city ones. They ALL still go BLUE though, so make sure of that at least.
