2004 Mushroom season( Victoria)

Munted: I stress the back one is FINE. All the other need to be THROWN OUT.

RE: "I'd rather be safe than vomiting! you understand"

-> There are much more serious consequences than a little vomit here..
-> You are risking serious liver damage or death when you eat the wrong mushrooms

Thanks again guys. . .Geez that gets me cut, thought I had a haul :(

I know how bad the wrong ones can be, had an episode in Perth, went looking down in the big karrie forests about 2 years ago. . .Came back with what we thought were copper tops. I was in hospital all night and it was one of the worst experiences in my life. Hence my wariness this time around.

Just so you know, yeah, i'm keeping the back one, throwing the rest out.

:)

This thread worries me, I can't say I much aprove of any of this :\

If you don't know what your looking for you shouldn't be shrooming. Don't rely on the internet for advice on a possibly fatal practice. You've been in hospital once...... 8)

munted - look very much like galerina autumnalis - DEADLY! note - no blue bruising, rusty brown sporeprint (often deposited on remnants of veil - which i can see on some of your specimens).

the mushroom at the top of your photo is possibly a sub, im not sure, the photo isn't clear enough. does it have obvious blue bruising on it?

everyone reading this thread MUST take note that picking p. sub's isn't something to take lightly. there are mushrooms out there which look very much alike and are either poisonous (stropharia aurantiaca) or deadly (galerina autumnalis).

take care and don't eat unless you're 100% sure (100%!!!!!!) that you have p. sub's - if in any doubt at all, chuck them.

I agree, it makes me nervous saying "yep, thats that and this is this". Particularly when I dont want to be responsible for some ones death or injuries. I sometimes just want to say nothing but then I consider what may hapen if people are not helped at all.

Munted for instance may have eaten all of the mushrooms pictured above. Instead I narowed it down a bit. He should NOT take my ID as authoritive but it may help with his overall understanding of what he is looking for.

I agree. I hate to sound like a preacher, but I spent countless hours reading and looking at different species before I even went on my first hunt. Although poisonous mushrooms may look somewhat similar and grow in the same habitat, they are not hard to identify once you have learned how to identify them. I think with all the mushroom excitement/discussion there is too little on the danger and emphasis of eating the wrong mushrooms. It can be very dangerous when you do not know what you are doing.

Sorry guys, I never pretended to be anything other than a novice and I am going to be careful.

I am doing spore prints and all that stuff and there is no way I would eat anything unless I was 110% sure.

Is there any other way to learn??? (I don't mean by trial and error by the way :))

The best way to learn i belive (and how i did), was to go out time and time and time again with an experianced picker. Unfortunatley we can't all have that luxury :(

Spore prints came back brown on all but the big one (purple :)) and they still hadn't stained blue, they are now in the bin.

Well, just goes to show. I found a bunch that looked so much like subs. I got so excited, my initial worry was that there was brown dust on the stems... Next I found that they didn't blue on damage. However, they are purple/blue on this inside of the stem. Then finally an initial spore print gave a brownish/chocolate colour in return.

*Cries*

Maybe next time. =D

Well I'm off to do some pick, pick, picking right now, giddy up and all that. Another good way to tell with mushies is to boil them in water and squeeze the juice out. Any brown water and the mushrooms are a no no, blueish black purple is the way to go.

yeah those look like galerina.. it will take a bit of work to find some subs.. but once u find ur first sub ull never forget what they look like

Yes it is a myth actually, the amount of heat required to lower the effectiveness of mushrooms is more than just a quick dip in the sap. The amount it lowers is so insignificant I don't think it's worth mentioning. Also in liquid form the mushrooms can start to work in as little as 5 minutes...

^^ Quite right. My mates and I regularly boil them in water for as much as an hour to make a nice mushroom tea out of them.

It works very well, I can surely attest to that.

Cheers.

ButrosButros_grantos-

I don't think that boiling them in water and looking for blue water is a safe way of seeing if they are the real deal because what if for example they are all active bar one or two posonous ones. The water will still turn blue.

I know what they look like... I'm just saying you can use it as a sign, also the smell, they smell different when cooking.

Picked more last night, please note, I don't think that mixing holden tops and blue meanies is such a good idea. I brewed both kinds up, there wasn't even that many about 8 between 2 of us. Onset was about 45 minutes, afer that it was all down hill, I had difficulty moving, speaking, pretty much doing anything but staring at the roof... BUT WHAT A ROOF!

Can someone PLEASE tell me which 'slang' is for which mushroom.
I'm sorry but it kinda shits me when people ask if they're blue meanies or whatever. Are they p. subs. or what?
If you ask me P. Subs are both golden and blue... so WTF people!?
Help out a 'slang' retarded fella.

slang terms are really silly ways of describing mushies because they are confusing.

that said -
i've heard p. cubensis described as gold tops.
blue meanies are psilocybe/copelandia cyanescens.

both these are cow dung dwelling mushrooms, so it's likely butros is talking about them.

however, some people call p. sub's gold tops and copper tops... so slang only ends up confusing people 8(

butros - some of the advice you offered isn't so good in terms of harm minimisation! for starters - as someone else mentioned, brewing up some mushrooms and seeing the mixture turn blue isn't going to distinguish a couple of poisonous mushrooms making their way into your bag by accident. and i'd hardly identify a psilocybe based on smell... if you're not 100% sure to begin with, it is unlikely that you'll be any surer after taking a whiff.
