opiates for pain

curious, have ahd the most shocking neck pain (starts at base of ear and travels down to colar bone) quite annoying...anywho...found some oxycodon 5mg caps, took 2 of them about 30min ago with a glass of mix of turkey n coke and horay pain gone! only problem is i know it will come back and have 2 caps left...what would be a good way to get through tonight and till about midday untill i can get back to the docs? also have a box of panadine fort but generally don't like to take it cuz the porcelin punishment the next day..or 2 later is bloody viscious :P

Cheers all

I woke up last weekend with almost the exact same thing.
Couldn't lift my arms up or get out of bed.

Called a doctor to make a house call but it was 4 hours so ended up going to a medical centre.
All he did was prescribe some anti inflammitorys which has barely done anything.

My guess is that he sees a male in mid 20s with a neck pain and thinks I'm in there looking for prescription drugs.
Pain is still there a week later.

i'm curious about the experience some of you that have gone through pain management have had...

kind of a chicken before the egg situation lol

was it your doctor that had tried various strong meds (opiates or not) before suggesting pain management, or were they only willing to assist after referring you to pain management?

i keep getting told that i shouldn't expect much from the pain management clinic as my GP doesn't think it will help at all, yet no one has ever tried me on anything stronger than tramadol or random NSAIDs...

i'm not expecting to get handed oxys or anything, i understand there is alot more to the clinic than meds (which i'm very much looking forward to), i'm just curious of others experiences...
i've got a 3 month wait until i get seen at the pain management clinic, so i'm glad its not closer to a year, but its frustrating to be told not to get my hopes up.

luckily i got some more methadone, so will be having 20mg tonight for a relaxing weekend :)

^i'd expect more help and co-operation with a PM doc than just a GP, that's for sure. have you seen any kind of specialist relative to your RLS?

i'm in a position where i'm not able to see a PM doc regularly nor is it a feasible option at the moment; the closest is nearly 6 hrs from where i currently live. it took me 4 years to find a GP who listened to me and let me take control of my treatment options, within reason of course...until he up and offed after 2 years and i had to find another who then up and offed at the beginning of the year so i'm pretty much at square one again at the moment.

the GP who let me have options started me on trams, to nosrpan (bupe) patches to fentanyl patches and then onto morphine for pain. after he left it was hard finding a dr willing to touch my scripts so had to settle on low dose (40mg daily) oxy and tramadol along with baclofen and valium with periods using neurontin. now i'm on tramadol and endones.

during that period i signed a contract with him (i wasn't seeing a PM doc) for pill counts (my idea when i was at a bad stage) and urine drops (monthly) to make sure i wasn't using on top of the morphine - set it straight that i'd drop positive for weed and that wasn't a problem - he'd rather me smoking pot occasionally than being dependent on diazepam. i also had to be referred to other doctors for assessment for him to continue treatment after the 6 month mark.

ive seen a sleep specialist with a sleep study that diagnosed my RLS n may last year and mentioned it was quite a severe case.
i'm now being bounced around various neuro(insert random medical term here) doctors, nerve conduction study was fine but EMG results showed something funky that the neurologist wants the neuromuscular Dr to look at lol.

so no ones happy to accept that perhaps i just have painful RLS which presents symptoms in the day time as well as at night, possibly mainly because the pain wasn't relieved when given standard or even non standard RLS meds.
it could be something else all together, who knows...

i think my current gp wont prescribe anything because i was honest about my past drug use and he keeps using that as a reason not to give me certain meds (like xanax).
the pain clinic was my idea and i was only able to get the referral after seeing a psychiatrist.

i know some people can get oxys easily and all that, but i am trying to treat the pain and i know its hard for alot of people to get help in this regard also, so i'm just curious to hear how others have gone with the experience.

your situation sounds very frustrating, is it not possible to get any letters from the previous doctors?

fuck our medical system

It sounds like you have had a lot of bad luck misk. I have had a lot of good 'luck' with doctors but I think I make some of that luck (I've never had a problem with any doctor getting my meds so I must be doing something right). Personally I don't like to talk about illicit drug history (which I don't really have anyway), I have never been in a situation where I have thought it would be beneficial in any way (unless you are getting mental help).

I have gotten oxycodone seeing a doctor without any paperwork or even an examination in a 15min appointment. I needed it though and had an upcoming surgery (though that wasn't checked). In general without a visible condition or a condition on paper that is often associated with pain it is very hard to get these meds (but I managed so it's not impossible). Just stick with a doctor who seems good for long enough and if they have a heart they will bump you up the pain medication ladder.

the GP was actually ok, he told the pain clinic i was an urgent case, which i am in some ways but i know there are others worse off, so i would hate to see the non urgent waiting list.

all this waiting and shit had been stressing me out quite alot, but ive been playing the waiting game for various appointments since january, so the more i learn to accept that the less anxious i am.
i dont like the feeling that i'm in the too hard basket in terms of a diagnoses, just getting juggled around alot, so im really looking forward to the pain management clinic as from what they told me on the phone there are numerous services available and i think a multi angle approach will be the only way of getting close to functioning like a normal person again.

i was only honest about the drug use as my mother was with me at the time, and she is aware of my past, plus i don't like holding back information that may contribute to all this shit thats going on. it pisses me off that he is now using it as an excuse not to prescribe meds, but i'll stick with him and jump through the hoops and see what happens.

ended up having 25mg of methadone tonight, pain is gone, but fuck i wish i had a back scratcher lol

Good luck. I think you will have a better outcome at the PM clinic.

Once you get a schedule 8 med (oxy, dillies, methadone, ect) it is HEAPS easier to get more. It seriously like a gateway and once you're through (got the meds) you're good. Go to any doctor with your drug packet (don't throw it out) and they will treat you with a lot more respect than just asking for meds with no documents.

What do I tell my doc

Hi.

I take Hydrocodone 10/320 four per day.

They are only short duration relief. How should i approach him about longer duration meds?

Like most of us I know my meds well bu don't want to come off looking like an abuser to my doc.

I have liver damage and the hydro has APAP> i want to get on a strainer analgesic opioid (NSAIDS give me Vascular probs)

My doc also seems to do a lot of testing on me. Don't know if it's needed or he is covering himself.

Any advice would be help full
Im in the mid wset.

Hi i became good friend,s with my GP he knew i was in great pain an wanted to give me relief but he wasnt %100 sure he put me on the Oxy,s as a Gp can ONLY give you a script for 3 month,s after that he has to register with Govenment for long term supply of S8 Drug,s .
Before i was on 150ml Methadone which was a VERY high dose biggest in NSW sent me to a drug clinic to came off the med,s and they wrote back saying that this man is not a drugg,e but was in real pain ,so went to the pain clinic now im %100 better than i was thank,s to my Doctor manager Doc Who broke his neck some time, im sorry for my spelling he worked in the operation room putting people asleep for an operation broke his neck and sufferd great apin himself he was a doctor then went to London and back to UNNIE and studied pain managerment to find the best ways to treat people with cronic pain now there is a 3month waitting list to see him , as where i live you a drugge first till you prove other wise it really give,s me the shit,s that we are treated this was , you dont here much about doctor,s who use there patient,s drug,s they go to a special place where you dont here about them for a while ,any way im getting off the track here ,hope you dont mind what is your trouble and what opp,s have you had ????

I am being treated by a neurologist and after reading this thread I may be not be getting treated correctly.

I take four Norco 10/320 but they only stop the pain for a short while and I have to suffer until my next dosage time. I asked my doc about breakthrough pain but he just grunted and didn't answer.

My doc is a nuro and i am about ready to walk if it wasn't so hard to find other docs to take chronic pain suffere seriously.

i have tried NSAID an am allergic to them. Opioids are the only thing that I can tolerate. I am not an abuser. But i sure would like to know something about pain clinics. How they evaluate you condition ect.

Cost was always the reason i never looked into a pain clinic.

Are they more likely to take a guy seriously and provide more aggressive therpy?

I'm on disability and if i could get this pain under control (and shed a few...alot of pounds) I could go back to work.

As you Aussies say, "Thanks Mate".

Sounds like you got a through. Shrinks scare me. Did some shit in Nam that would churl your toe nails. Certain groups of younger professionals are so judgmental about that era he'd try to brand me a axe murderer..lol
but thanks..it was help ful.

Drop me a post when you can. My dad wa stationed in Aussie-land in the war and loved it. My son graduated university but before hand there was an international auto race at the university made up of engineers. My son brought home twenty Aussies to party at my house.
Next thing I know we got guys wrestling in the front yard. I lrt my son control the party and went to bed.

Came down stairs to find three of the Aussie boys passed on in the garage.

LOL got a thank you letter from their University with a thank you note and a class picture. It's hanging on the wall of my office.

My dad was right, you'll never met a bad Aussie.

i saw a psychologist the other day after my lawyer cracked the shits at my psychiatrist, and the difference a good psychologist can make is amazing after going through shit like Drs and medical issues.
it didnt help the pain, but it made me realise i down play alot of shit and just sort of shrug it off, but wont get anywhere doing that...

wingman, thanks for the story about the pain management clinic.
during the intake interview it was very clear they have a program to will tackle the situation from many angles and will work on getting you back to as functional as possible.

sadly my GP says 'its only 3 months, here have some anti depressants', but anyway, for others that are going through a similar situation push for a pain management referral. its a long waiting list, but low costs and will do so much more than your GP would ever do - unless you're a lucky cunt :)
