Will i see a decent government before i die?

Anyone seen this? Some lucky, lucky, bastards in Ireland have been included in the first 2,000 people to get a universal basic income of £1600 - with no strings attached.

"If backed, the first English pilot would see thirty people in Jarrow in the North East and East Finchley in north London be given £1600 a month to see what effect it has on their mental and physical health, as well as whether they choose to work or not."

Well Durh, I strongly suspect the answer to all of those questions is a no brainer. People will actually get all the sleep they need, and have the time and money to cook and eat properly and to exercise and to socialise with who they choose, and to pursue their interests. And have the time and energy available to get their home organised, regularly cleaned, and maintained etc. How could that be anything but a positive thing for the vast majority of people and their mental and physical health?

"Proponents, who include Manchester’s mayor Andy Burnham, argue that it is a practical solution to the challenges of the modern world, and that it could ultimately save governments money by reducing social ills."

Bring it on Mr Burnham, I'd actually, genuinely, vote for you for ever if you did!

Yay!! Free beer tokens 😃

Yeah, i don't see why not, if that's what you'd choose to spend it on.

Some cynic in the comments below the article, who may very well be correct, is saying this won't be 'normal money', it will be a highly monitored governmental digital currency. But there's obviously no laws against spending it on booze, and the cynic reckons the only conditions are that any members of the scheme will have their spending monitored, and they will have to spend all of it (or virtually all of it) every month. Basically - use it, or loose it.

Apparently, the government wants to create consumers above all else, out of the members of this scheme.

It could be a bit problematic for those of us wanting to acquire various substances that aren't 100% legal. I guess you'd have to have your own private stash of cash or crypto for that, or maybe that would be forbidden.

Still, these sorts of issues are getting way ahead of ourselves, it's unlikely to be widely rolled out any time very soon. Although it could possibly be only 5, 10, 15, or 20 years away, until it is. At a guess.

I'd have retired by the time of the latter 2 estimates anyway, and would only get £12,500 state pension.

So that would be a bit of a pisser. If that happened, I might say that I don't want to retire, I want to keep working, so I can get the UBI which is an extra 3.5K.

Mate, I hated the Tories with a passion. But at least they were hilarious in their total incompetence.

When Boris was PM, I used to love listening to the news to find out what absolute fuckwittery he had carried out that day.

But this lot are just repressive and depressive. I can't even muster a condescending cackle any more...

All the emphasis on state control and monitoring with this new government is quite terrifying imho. Also with the increasing cost of living and ever increasing open and hidden tax rises, things are very bad.

Wasn't there legislation passed, or an attempt to pass it, to make protests and such gatherings a criminal offense?

Outside of certain youtube channels the population doesn't even seem to care, or know about what's going down.

I dunno, I probably need to get off youtube and see how what used to be called the 'broadsheet newspapers' are covering all of this.

I'd imagine that even the most conservative and right wing broadsheets like The Times and The Telegraph would have a lot to say about the direction things are going in atm, and no doubt The Guardian and Independent would too.

It's all very depressing and concerning.

Kier Stalin now wants X banned because of that AI image that was created of him a few days ago. Jesus Christ! Talk about over-reacting! Maybe put some kind of restrictions on the use of such AI capabilities, (eg: banning the public uploading of such creations, unless they have the person's consent, and obviously there should be an outright ban on using such tech to undress children,) those kind of restrictions would be proportionate and reasonable, but to ban the entire platform!?

Edit: I think Musk has decided of his own volition, to remove the "Grok" feature from X, due to the widespread backlash that has ensued, following the Starmer incident.

But Starmer and his party do seem to be control freak nut cases imho.

There are legitimate concerns with this government, but there are also lots of decent MPs.

I would definitely get off YouTube; it feeds on your fears and provides you with more. Whatever your paranoid work colleague thinks about (David Icke accent) 'the mainstream media', at least they're held to account, whereas any old bullshit can gain traction on social media.

I was sent footage of a 'Jewish Satanic ritual'. Turned out to be an old documentary on Jewish history demonstrating ancient idol worship.

Depends what country you in

Western Hemisphere --- unlikely unless you already have one. Than the US wants your immigrants! (long as they white)

I am going to change my answer from no to HELLS NO. Hope we dont end up spending our lives during a revolution (non violent of course)

I cant stand social media these days - all the same about migrants and blokes called rupert saying they are for the working class.
That viral video with the 'migrant' going mental because he couldn't claim his 'free Playstation'. Which, if you looked at even slightly closely, was clearly in an American shop. Signage very visible.

But the usual suspects went wild over it.

I’m not sure where you’re getting that info from, but literally every source I can find says that Twitter is being investigated due to the flood of AI-generated child pornography over recent days.

The fact that Elon has simply paywalled the kiddypr0n generator really, really doesn’t get the app off the hook.

Nobody us talking about banning Twitter other than the usual right wing talking heads who earn tens of thousands per month from posting generic Twitter rage bait like the exact stuff you’re paraphrasing.

Regulation is clearly required. Paywalling the feature that has been churning out literal CP simply doesn’t cut it.

Again, literally nobody serious is talking about a ban, but regulations are clearly required.

EDIT: Ha! Seems I was replying to your previous version of this post and you’ve since addressed these issues. Then we are now in agreement!

He couldn't be any worse than Starmer, and over all he seems to have been doing a decent job as mayor of Manchester.

But I've probably only listened to about 10 - 15 of maybe a 100 or more of the short stories that he's written. He was very prolific.
Try "white fang" (its a novel but still good jack london)

Yeah I have read that one, and did enjoy it. It was a while ago now though, so I may give it another listen soon.

Wasn't it basically a reversal of the main canine's nature in each of the 2 books, from the tame nature of Buck to his transformation to his wild nature, in The Call of the Wild, to the wild nature of a wolf becoming tame in White Fang?

I know there was a lot more going on besides that, in both books, but those were some of the central and most emphasised plots of the books, it seemed to me.

I find my reactions to London's books pretty mixed, and I'm not sure if it's a me thing, or something about the books. Perhaps a bit of both at least on some ocassions.

I've tried a few more of his novels, but didn't really like The Cruise of the Snark, and cant remember if I finsihed it or not. And I definitely did not finish Martin Eden, although I enjoyed parts of it, I found other parts strangely irritating for some reason.

I was impressed by The People of The Abyss, and have listened to parts of it many times. George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London, was pretty much Orwell doing exactly what London had done a few decades earlier, and they both gathered their material by living exactly as they people they wrote about did, in order to write so well about it afterwards. Although I guess Friedrich Engels book on The Condition of the Working Class in England 1845 was perhaps the first major book written on the topic, and perhaps gave London his idea. Although Dickens was writing about similar things before Engels. I don't know how much further back this goes tbh.....

I really enjoyed John Barleycorn, and thought London's writing was amazing in that, especially in the opening few pages.

I also started reading another of London's books when I was at my Grandmas and really enjoyed it. This reminds me to ask my Uncle what the book's called, as I cant remember and must get a copy. :roll eyes:

It's similar with most of his short stories, I think Love Of Life was the short story collection I listened to, and most of them were excellent. But another random short story from another collection was very poor. But there's probably still around 80% of London's work that I've not read or listened to. There's so many books from so many good authors to read, it's kind of overwhelming, but of course you can only take things one book at a time.

Sorry for going on so much, just off one comment. I seem to be all stimmed up from some kratom that was supposed to be sedating, plus some weed :roll eyes:

I think it's a bit of an 'info dump' which some neurodivergent people like to do, if someone triggers one of their interests :\

If he gets it, he's still part of the city, rather than him leaving Manchester.
Yeah but obviously he'll have to relinquish his mayoral role, and will 'just' be the local MP, as well as possibly Prime Minster, if things work out that way.

If he does get that role, it seems that it would stand to reason that he wouldn't have anywhere near as much time for Manchester, and would be spending a lot less time in the city.

I don't think he'll forget Manchester though, it'll still be important to him.

Diversity from flooding with immigrants is not our strength. It lowers your wages, marginalises our culture, increases the crime, fills our hospitals, occupies our housing, ruins your schools, consumes our taxes, tightens our laws, restricts our freedoms, endangers your children, and calls you racist for questioning.
The rise, flood of displaced peoples or migrants has been the demise of every empire in recorded history, our Western democratic empire will be no different whether there is a brighter future out of the ashes remains to be seen .it would be naive to think we are any different to older super powers ,the marginalised ,poor and downtrodden will always seek a better future and in doing so collapse governments .May take a long time but if history tells us anything ...
