Been listening to a lot of Better Lovers and Every Time I Die lately, some Disembodied Tyrant and Signs of the Swarm (getting ready to see those two soon on their tour with Chelsea Grin and Shadow of Intent). Disembodied Tyrant absolutely blew me away when I first heard them opening for Fleshgod Apocalypse.

a lot of people on reddit comment this band sounds like knocked loose... to me, the distortion and pitch of the deep notes going to high pitched notes on guitar is so much more appealing than what knocked loose does... i'm the one that started with the not liking knocked looses vocals... it reminds me of frustrated humans where as i like stuff that reminds me of demons or dogs fighting/playing... here's the band i think ups knocked loose. this is their only song i really think is perfect by them. not my favorite stuff. i just think it's a lot better:



i have to say PRO KNOCKED LOOSE: the last song on the new knocked loose release with the ambience mixed with hardcore is really awesome to me... perfect piece of music. makes the band worthwhile...

anyways, since i like to comment in groups of five, here's some random acts with vocals like i described that i really like. demon shit. lol:






^^^^^^^^this is the band cock and ball torture. i might like their 1997 album cock tails a bit more than this one, but i think blue light might appreciate the first track on this a bit more... cock and ball torture is mostly demon growling stomach turning vocals, but this track has a more dude human vocal guy starting out switching back and forth with some one doing the stomach vocals...

taking me a minute to think of one last video for this post... hmm... after a few minutes of sitting here thinking, i want to add APARTMENT 213 to this play list.... they aren't gore grind like the other bands. they'd probably actually just be considered old school hardcore, but there is definitely some metal influenced guitar on this release, so i feel like someone might enjoy this if they like the other stuff i listed.. i don't know what's up with the sample at the beginning of this. sorry if it offends anyone. i think it's supposed to just be that hardcore music is like an over protective father, so i mean, i think it's humorous artistically. also this dude like knocked loose doesn't really sound like a demon, and is just a frustrated human, but a lot of people are gonna say this is what oldschool hardcore is supposed to sound like. go back in hardcore history to stuff like slap shot, spazz, crog mags and what not:

to further talk about the subject of knocked loose's guitar tone... i mentioned the notes go from deep notes then to high pitch notes... a perfect example of this which i think has better distortion than knocked loose is PANTARA on suicide note part 2.. listen at 3:15 in this song. knocked loose definitely has similar stuff. pantara just does it a lot better... there's a ton of punk and hardcore that use those types of deep tones and then high pitched tones. i wasn't really a big fan of pantara's use of the pitch shifter guitar pedal, but it actually sounds really good to me at this point:

also what i notice is knocked loose's distortion is just not the same as a lot of stuff, and for me i don't like it... maybe some people like that... but honestly, what i have to say from being 39 yo and playing guitar since i was like 13... Pantara's distortion settings on the amp are way more punk and similar to something like green day on insomniac or dookie albums. like i watched a guy on you tube playing the dookie guitar pedal, and knocked loose doesn't really have that distorted sound. pantara is gonna be more similar to green day or what a generic punk band would use for distortion... generally not even talking about punk, knocked loose's distortion really is not the same as a lot of radio rock too.. i think it totally fits the last song on their new album with the ambience that i was talking about, but generally for hardcore metal, it's not really my thing....




also i want to comment on the other bands i posted. i definitely posted about gore grind bands before, and i think i posted this exact play list that i have in quotes with out maybe the last band.... this is pretty amusing to me though the third video in quotes the ULCROUS PHLEGM vocals at 2.16 sound a lot more like a peaceful helpful alien from another planet or dinosaur or something. like he kind of sounds like he wants to be your friend. the vocals in the second video Disgorged Foetus sound kind of like he wants to eat people... definitely not the vibe of the first band... lol. all different types of demons...... when talking about the fourth video Cock and Ball Torture, mentioned "dude human vocal guy." that guy kind of reminds me of Rob Zombie, which a lot of people on blue light have mentioned. rob zombie has a real vibe like he's a friendly dude. he's just giving off good vibes, where as some one like Marilyn Manson is bringing the hate... i dunno. this is all stuff i think.. sorry if i already mentioned this stuff. i definitely posted about gore grind, and then in another post i was talking about marilyn manson v.s. rob zombie. i don't know if i combined the post.
 
this isn't even really metal. i can actually see how it relates to metal core, but this band was kind of a part of the screamo and punk scene... the guitar from Jerome's Dream is kind of similar to knocked loose, but imo, this is way more appealing and listenable..

this release, they have really high pitched psycho bird vocals:



here it sounds like they are yelling through a bull horn in a deeper voice.. really bizarre:




listening to their stuff with high pitched vocals fucking took me to the other side before i even used drugs as an early teen. the first video in this post really is something else to me... the first few records they did are pretty similar... they did a split with the band the one am radio that's just random depressing pop music and the jerome's dream contribution is just not that good on that one... but what i posted and some more on you tube is really amazing.

i personally don't really see a difference in "screamo" v.s. "metal"... like honestly metal core like knocked loose is so much different than something like ozzy or whatever... even pantera and 90's stuff is different... i think korn's guitar is kind of like knocked loose too, and korn is the shit to me. love korn. listen to "twist" for that deep notes then high pitched notes too... totally forgot about the main stream stuff like korn and pantera for that style of guitar... definitely worth a mention cause people might not see how it compares to something like knocked loose... also for undergound, daughters guitar kind of blows knocked loose a way. the singer of daughters is a total dick hole in real life, but they are crazy. he starts off just like regular screamo in the career and then thinks he's elvis or some shit...

ALSO THE DUDE IN JEROMES DREAM UNLIKE A LOT OF OTHER BANDS, HE'S PLAYING BASS AND SCREAMING AT THE SAME TIME INSTEAD OF JUST A SINGER WITH OUT AN INSTRUMENT... THAT TAKES SO MUCH MORE EFFORT IMO... i'm pretty sure all their records are just live recordings... i dunno.. really impressive to me.
 
also if you like deftones for the singing, and are into knocked loose's sound, check out glassjaw if you haven't... this song is amazing. a minute 30 seconds into the song, they do that deep notes to high pitched notes thing too:

 
This is progressive metal, Dream Theater credits Fates Warning with having created the genre, my favorite record is No Exit which is the first of their records to feature Ray Alder on vovals , he is absolutely one of my favorite vocalists in this genre and I highly recommend exploring their catalogue if you like this.

power violence is cool. lol... i think some of it is more metal sounding than others, but all is kind of metal related imo...

that record you sent me is definitely quality stuff... hard to remember all of these hardcore and metal underground acts when no one ever talks about them... i might've actually heard that before... still a cool listen.
 
^^^^^^these two videos kind of have similar vibes to some of the stuff i was posting like how poster zoplicone bandit was mentioning power violence... the first one is similar to the metal and goregrind stuff i posted. that second link kind of reminds me of standard hardcore bands like Hatebreed, but it's a little harder and more metal.. i'd think people on reddit hardcore would like that a lot...


getting into a different kind of metal.. I always liked Year of Our Lord. this might be more black metal or standard metal although there are no guitar solos:




there's another song off this release with the black cover that i like even more, but i can't find it on the net anymore. they used to play it on college radio.. this one will do:





this one might actually even have some prog rock influence, although i'm not really sure what that genre is, so i might be wrong. just has keyboards and stuff. a few of their other songs have some more classical instrumentation too:

 
the weirdest thing was they used to have this festival at a music venue in my state every couple months in early 2000's, they'd call them "skate fests" or whatever... the venue had a capacity of like a thousand or more people downstairs, and a space that fit 300 or so people upstairs. bands would play non stop through out a 12 hour period. they'd have a ton of metal core bands that were so much like knocked loose play with emo and pop punk bands. it was the weirdest mix and vibe, but for whatever reason these scenes came together. black metal like wasn't cool at all or something, so you'd never hear anything at all like that at these fests.

one of the popular bands was poison the well... i didn't really like them at all. i always liked the singing in the style that they have at 1.50 into this, but i didn't even remember them having that really. that's just something i notice now. that song i posted a few posts above by Glassjaw is also pretty similar. that always stuck out to me... it sounds like when slipknot or deftones sing.. there really wasn't much singing at the fests i would go to when the metal core was taking place. it was just people like violently spin kicking and punching each other in the pit to chuggah chuggah guitar music... i really didn't like that vibe and would just kind of hang out in the hall at the venue when this was going on and go in to the see emo stuff.... this poison the well:



forty seconds into this song there is some good singing, after that it gets into standard chuggah chuggah hardcore real quick. sounds terrible to me other than the singing part. for metal core i only like the really high pitched guitar stuff like i pointed out from knocked loose, and that part of the pantara song and a few others above.. more poison the well:



personally i think cory taylor of slipknot is a better singer and the hardcore parts of slipknot are better than most standard underground metal core.. the drum tone on the 1999 slipknot album is some of my favorite in music, and i just think the whole thing works out really well. i didn't really like slipknot that much at first though, but after giving them a listen a few times i think the 1999 album is great.

the only underground metal core band i like more than slipknot or deftones is cave in, and i can't even really listen to the metal core parts of cave in, i just flick through it all the time to get to the singing and there's barely any of that. like i said i'm just generally more entertained by slipknot going hardcore than most metal core. there is a part on the 1999 record where knocked loose plays a really similar part on guitar as slipknot on there new record... this is Cave in though:

4.15 seconds into this there is some singing. i really like that part.. there is more singing on this release, but generally not enough imo. it's hard to really sit through imo. these first two links are early in their career:


3.10 into this song there's the actual singing, but it doesn't go on for very long. some metal core vocals go on, and then the singing starts again for a little bit:

this album, they lost the metal core, and went for a more radio rock and on this album and the few albums after, people actually compare it to prog rock. the vocals aren't really as great as the first two releases i posted. it's all this guy steven brodskey doing the singing parts. when he started out, he really sounded special imo.. but this release and all the stuff after is really good. people that like 90's radio rock might like this. they got even more appealing to pop audiences on the release jupiter later on. this is the release final transmission though:

i already posted the band Isis sometime a few months or more back (my favorite release is mosquito control which is their old stuff. the bass player from tool played with them on the ending album of their career). The middle east is one of the most famous clubs in the boston mass area of USA. Cave In, Isis, and Converge always used to play there back in the late 90's and early 2000's. it felt like every week this kid that did college radio who kind of had a jim carey comedy act going on would announce the shows and announce all the bands names in death metal voices. lol. anyways this is converge.. a lot of people that are into knocked loose are converge fans.. personally i think converge would murder knocked loose if they were in a fighting video game like mortal combat. i keep pointing out the deep to high pitch guitar parts that these acts do, and this converge release has the strongest of the high pitched guitar parts for them compared to their other releases. there is some singing scattered on this release. mostly it's just screaming, but some of the guitar is pretty standard metal compared to metal core. listening to this whole release is kind of hard to get through, but it's one of the best from the genre. imo. there some singing around twenty minutes and a few other parts. i think they were a straight edge band, or this whole group of bands i'm mentioning was apart of the straight edge scene at one point.. it sounds like they are on drugs though.. anyways, Converge:



that's probably enough metal reviews from me for now.

haha yea thats why i posted them, had a quick browse of what had been posted and didn't notice any aussie metal. I used to go to gigs alot when I was younger and lived with the drummer of excarnate for a couple years in melb, he's also the drummer in extortion and rort.
