God knows what will happen after the ban to all those still dependent on large doses of benzos and haven't been able to taper. Most gps don't want to know and most DSPs don't do benzo tapers anymore. I forsee a lot of 999 calls for seizures in the next year. Paramedics have iv medazolam and iv diazepam to deal with grand mal seizures but that's hardly a long term solution. It makes me shudder just thinking about it...
My next door neighbour who is a bloke in his mid 50's was taken to hospital last week. He has been on diazepam + temazepam for over 20 years and methadone for quite a few years also. Anyway last week he purposely took around 300ml of methadone and a load of his benzos that he had saved up in a bid to end his life. Luckily for him he had forgotten that he had his keyworker visiting him in the morning and she saw the state of him and called for an ambulance which came and took him away. He was in hospital for 3 days before being allowed home.
I saw him very briefly when he got home as he had family with him who have taken him away for a week or 2 while he sorts his head out. I spoke to him on the phone at the weekend and asked if he has now fucked up his methadone & benzo script as doctors etc would be reluctant for him to have the means to try and off himself again. He hasn't lost his script but whereas before he would get a weeks worth of benzos and methadone in one go, he now has to collect one days worth each time so he can't try and overdose on them again. This is the second time he has done this but the first time was before i knew him. Anyway he's back this weekend so i'll be keeping a close eye on him for a while.
