Please, Neil Diamond is more creative and more influential in a single sequin on his jacket than anything Lydon inflicted upon the music world.
i'm quite a fan of Neil Diamond TBH, a truly great voice and seem to mean every word, love his version of Mr Bogangles.
You're either trolling on this one or just plain ignorant on the subject, have you ever listened to Metal Box or First Edition ???..... I thought not
I'm a fan of industrial music a phrase coined by Throbbing Gristle in the 70's another genuinely innovative and hugely influential band many of which went on to form the equally epic Psychic TV.
None of this stuff is supposed to be easy listening like Neil Diamond, it's music that does explore the darker side of reality and crosses over into performance art at times, not all music needs to be so superficial that it can be instantly enjoyed as it comes out of the radio in you car, although such stuff has a place.
I have tried to cultivate a wide and varied taste in music, to suggest that a band that clearly pushed boundaries and created a genuinely unique sound are talentless purely because you are too narrow minded to appreciate anything more than the musical equivalent of a Dan Brown Novel says a lot about you but nothing about the music which has already proven its worth by the large numbers of people that purchased it.
There has been some truly great music made as a direct result of Punk /Industrial and genuine New wave bands like ;-
Pigface
Damage Manual
NIN
and so many more, bands like The Pistols PIL TG and Psychic TV totally broke the mould and changed the way people thought about music which was stuck in a rut of 15 minute guitar solos and tedious soft rock which offered nothing for those looking for music that they could really identify with.
Your expectations of music seem to be that anything you don't understand is dismissed out of hand as rubbish, all music deserves some respect especially when it trying to move things on or create something new, you'll find that most popular genres have their roots in a much more niche area that is then diluted to give it a wider appeal.
Check out David Bowie, influenced by the like of Kraftwerk and The Stooges or MoterHead influenced by The Sex Pistols, MC5 ( so far ahead of there time folk like you would have said they were shite)....then work on from there influenced by Bowie, NIN , Radiohead whom incidentally opnelly site PILs Metal Box as a strong precursor to the sounds they developed, U2 alos site PILs work as a massive influence on their sound specifically the guitar of Keith Levene .
The Pistols were a huge influence on so many, U2, Depeche Mode, Wire, The Jam, Moterhead, Joy Division Nirvana to name only a few.
Music is a constant mixing table and it's the pioneers that provide the step changes, The Pistols took influences from elsewhere but created a whole new sound and attitude albeit short lived, PIL took some of that but in a totally new direction and released something in Metal Box that was totally unexpected and genuinely different creating a genre all of it's own by disregarding the established rules, other did the same, without them main stream music would not exist .

) was ? If so yes .
