Only God Forgives - A drug smuggler attempts to find the man who killed his brother.
Man, you have no idea how excited I was for this movie - I love pretty much everything that Nicholas Winding Refn has made, and was stoked as fuck to his latest. But...holy mother of fuck this is a terrible, terrible movie. The narrative is paper thin, the characters are paper thin, the score is generic orchestra music, the pacing is fucking stupid, and the visual style is garish and unpleasant. This is the result when a director doesn't know how to live up to the praise for his previous work. Critics loved Drive's stylishness and it's brutality, so Refn apparently decided his best move is to essentially parody his own style in an attempt to please those same critics. The violence in the film is sparse and arbitary, the narrative is simultaneously simple and overly-convoluted, every scene contains dozens of random jump cuts, none of the characters show any emotion throughout the entire film, and every scene is lit with harsh reds and blues making the entire film feel like a dream that I couldn't understand or give a shit about. It's pretentious garbage through and through.
Just...fuck this movie. Fuck this movie so hard. The only good thing I have to say about it, is at least the editor had the decency to only make it 89 minutes long. Any longer and I would have started throwing shit at my TV.
