Only God Forgives - A drug smuggler attempts to find the man who killed his brother.

Man, you have no idea how excited I was for this movie - I love pretty much everything that Nicholas Winding Refn has made, and was stoked as fuck to his latest. But...holy mother of fuck this is a terrible, terrible movie. The narrative is paper thin, the characters are paper thin, the score is generic orchestra music, the pacing is fucking stupid, and the visual style is garish and unpleasant. This is the result when a director doesn't know how to live up to the praise for his previous work. Critics loved Drive's stylishness and it's brutality, so Refn apparently decided his best move is to essentially parody his own style in an attempt to please those same critics. The violence in the film is sparse and arbitary, the narrative is simultaneously simple and overly-convoluted, every scene contains dozens of random jump cuts, none of the characters show any emotion throughout the entire film, and every scene is lit with harsh reds and blues making the entire film feel like a dream that I couldn't understand or give a shit about. It's pretentious garbage through and through.

Just...fuck this movie. Fuck this movie so hard. The only good thing I have to say about it, is at least the editor had the decency to only make it 89 minutes long. Any longer and I would have started throwing shit at my TV.

Taxi Driver

It was a bit slow, but I liked it. The soundtrack was absolutely great. And I kind of feel like Pedobear because I had no idea Jodie Foster was 13 zomfg >_<

Spring Breakers - Four friends go to extreme lengths to have an awesome Spring Break.

Shitty pop music, garish lighting, gratuitous sexuality, disorienting editing, mostly unlikable characters, and blatant moralizing make this movie....pretty fucking cool. Spring Breakers is basically a disturbing commentary on modern youth culture - it portrays Spring Break like a modern Gomorrah, the streets filled with sex and drugs and music. This movie is like a Super Double Extra Fudgy Monster Brownie Chocolate Sundae with extra whipped cream - so rich and sugary that, while delicious, it kinda makes you want to puke, but in a good way. "Excess" is the only real word for it, but it's a controlled excess - though the level of sensory stimulation is ridiculous, Harmony Korine always feels in control. He knew exactly the kind of film he wanted to make and, for the most part, he did it perfectly.

The four main characters have a surprising amount of depth that is slowly revealed as their behavior becomes more and more reckless. James Franco's character is a little confusing, most of the time bordering on silly and ridiculous, but at least he gave a good performance, which is more than I can say for Gucci Mane's character (who sounds like a stroke victim). At first I was kinda skeptical about Korine's use of former Disney stars (and his own sister[who shows the most skin out of the 4]) as his main characters, but I guess it's pretty unsurprising that they all play drunken party sluts really convincingly.

The music is both terrible, and perfect. Shitty pop, dance, and rap songs abound. But really, the movie would have suffered immensely without them.

I really like this film. After being let down by Only God Forgives, Spring Breakers felt very refreshing.

that's awesome that you like Spring Breakers. it is sugar. goes well with the grit. watching the film is indulgence.

edit:
great write-up, by the way.

Poultrygeist - A fast food chicken restaurant sets up shop on the old Tromahawk Indian burial ground, leading to protests from the Collegiate Lesbians Against Mega-Conglomerations (C.L.A.M.).

Basically, I don't even know what to say about this movie other than that it's brilliant and that I loved every second of complete bat-shit insanity. The movie was made by Lloyd Kaufman and the guys at Troma (The Toxic Avenger series and about 1,000,000 others) and is a crazy amalgamation of every B-movie trope ever created and disgusting, over-the-top gore and violence - but the thing that makes it work is the surprisingly clever writing and the film's obvious self-awareness. It was originally meant to be a musical, and while it does have a few (totally horrendous) musical numbers, the premise is abandoned entirely about half way through the film.

Poultrygeist is awesome, disgusting, offensive, clever, stupid, sexy, ugly and completely hilarious - it's one of those movies that revels in pure, unfiltered hedonism. I have never enjoyed Troma films but this one is special - after about 30 years of making the lowest-quality movies on the planet, they finally managed to channel their wealth of experience into a film which is not only worthwhile, but downright impressive. I loved everything about it (even the fucking terrible music).

5 Stars

Amazingly ridiculous film. Stumbled upon it after subscribing to Troma's youtube channel. One of my all-time favourite stupid movies. Up there with Hawk The Slayer (just, wow), StarCrash (French shit-heap), and Zardoz (unbelievable nonsense).

Forgot to mention the movie I saw recently: Star Trek into Darkness. Surprisingly good. Maybe I was just really high? Never been a fan of the franchise, but I loved Cumberbatch's performance as Khan and it just made me realise how good of a decision it is to get J.J. Abrams to direct the next Star Wars film.

Incidentally, I gave up on both Spring Breakers and Pacific Rim. The latter, more because of the quality of the stream and my inability to see straight. Spring Breakers though, just seemed offensively superficial. I couldn't handle it...got a lot of free time coming up though, so may return to both those and do an embarrassing u-turn like I did with Leon. Ha.

Anyway, sad to hear Only God Forgives sucks. Trance may heal the wounds. So good (I know I already said, but it can't be said enough).

Pacific Rim.

It's one of those movies you don't know you've been waiting your entire life to see, until you see it. Goddamn.

I haven't seen it, but Springer Bell's British accent sounds so fake in the previews. So on a hunch I looked him up on IMDB and holy shit he's British! Nothing is real.

Holy Motors - A man in a white limousine uses make-up and disguises for his various 'appointments' around town.

Hoo boy. I knew this movie was supposed to be weird, but it still managed to take me by surprise. Aside from all of the obvious visual effects and great camera work, I have a hard time determining where the film's strengths lie - the narrative is confusing (and contains lots of dense symbolism, allegory, and artistic references), the motivations for the characters is very unclear, and at times I found myself at an utter loss for words to describe what the hell is happening. For all of its arty pretentiousness, there are still a number of really great scenes - some dramatic, some funny, and some that leave you transfixed. This is definitely not a movie I would watch with friends, but if you're interested in a well-made piece of cinema that challenges certain conventions and requires you to really think you could certainly do worse than Holy Motors.

I needed a bunch of Mary Jane to make it through this one.

This is such a great write-up I nao may have to watch this film tonight. Good job, grunger.

wolverine was like rar, slash, crash. 3.5/5

seriously, i'm too old to be winning midweek midnight free preview sessions. i fell asleep for about 10 mins just as the action started.

look at you getting credit for job well done.

it's harmony's wife, not sister. i thought he had a little sister with small roles in some of his earlier films; google isn't backing me up. he does have a sister.

Upstream Color

just gonna post in the film's thread.

Aww, you guys! <3

big head alert!

nah, those were both good reviews. nowhere near the quality of benefit's reviews, but well on the way. benefit was a fucking wordsmith and his presence is sorely missed here.

Huh...not sure why I thought Rachel was his sister. Maybe I just assumed by default that Harmony is the kinda guy who would have no problem filming his sister's tits.

Wife definitely makes more sense.

I would give both a run for their money. Sadly, apathy has a strong hold.

No Looking Back

Yeah, from 1998.

I really love this movie. I'm such a sucker for Ed Burns. I love his stuff. This movie, along with She's the One and Beautiful Girls (not Ed Burns' work) are indulgent for me.

Oh, and Jon Bon Jovi is in it too, so there's that.
