Imagine the guy who recorded Scott 4 had spent a couple of decades in a dimly-lit bedsit, chain-smoking Gitanes, drinking supermarket vodka, reading Baudelaire and true crime books and listening to industrial music.

That's kind of what it's like. But even better than it sounds. The last album's percussion section featured a guy punching the shit out of some meat. Under Scott's meticulous direction.

Oh, and he's developed this Donald Duck voice he'll occasionally use. It's not at all funny, just terrifying.

A long way from The Sun Ain't Gonna Shne Anymore.

I actually listened to Metal Box last night and thought of posting a tune in (possibly) the same person's honour. Couldn't decide between Albatross and The Suit in the end.

Nicely done. ;)
 
When I saw PIL recently they played Albatross, a full 15min version which I thought was one of the best tracks they played, Mrs atm said it was self indulgent rubbish.....like most things a matter of personal taste and perspective:D

One of the best basslines ever to open an album IMO. Wish I'd gone to see them even more now.

TBH it was a bit of a pantomime but no more than I expected after all these years, they had a great sound system with plently of that dub base sound and the set was far from playing to the crowd, no pistols covers for a start.

never really like the Damned that much but always had a bit of a thing for this track:-

Yeah, I'd expected cabaret PiL, but from all I've heard it was far from it. My loss I suppose - the Manchester gig was well-received.

I've always had a soft spot for The Damned - initially just the Brian James period, but later on I came to even like their eighties stuff. And they pissed off the hardline cookie-cutter punks by changing style, which is always good.

This song, however, is a stinker - the only truly bad song on the first album. If even my dream woman (not that I have one as such, but let's say that Roxanne Pallett off the telly) took me back to her place and put this song on to create an 'atmosphere' I'd laugh my pelvis out:

Brian James - brilliant guitarist. Not as good as Keith Levene but still outstanding. Even the wank that is Feel The Pain has some great guitar on it. Not many punk bands could have got away with that tune. You probably think The Damned didn't. I beg to differ.
 
I'll agree that Brian James almost saves Feel The Pain. That guitar is probably the most imaginative thing anybody on that scene put on vinyl at the time.

It still sounds like a bad marriage of Velvets and Stooges though.

Keith Levene was also excellent at breaking the 'punk' mould with his playing, and IMO was up there with Geordie Walker for a bit. Which is high paise indeed.

ha ha too right.Was listening to Discharge 'fight back' ep.raw and brutal.They have become laughably lame.

Puts hand up to owning ,Smash-Offspring and early Green Day,typical polished sound though listenable.

Early eighties,late seventies is where punk is at.Remember kids,punk is not a fashion...right.
