Wisdom Teeth: Dental fear, Anaesthesia & Pain Killers.

I did phenobarbital a few times, it landed me to the ER with an OD... It's an ok drug, but the weakest of all the barbs family (long HL).

Holy shit NT. That's an awesome procedure to get.. I remember thinking that I might get my wisdom teeth pulled to try and blag some pain meds, but I heard from a mate he only got ibuprofen. Not even any weak opis, just NSAIDs. So that put me right off the idea.

You're likely to get an opioid analgesic for after the procedure, but it is likely it won't be a rather strong one. I have heard of people just getting Ibuprofen 800's, but call up after you've had it done and say the pain is unbearable, can't sleep etc. you might get something extra, but ibuprofen or naproxen do work well. As for your fear, I would recommend benzos, but don't know about your history/tolerance with them. Do remember though, that there will be plenty of anaesthetics running through your system while you are having the procedure done, IV midazolam or barbs, maybe fentanyl, maybe propofol. Who knows. I would just tell myself it should be a chance for a nice nap induced by heavy duty hypnotics, and I'd forget about the procedure.

For something like a wisdom tooth extraction, I'd imagine you'd get scripted at the very least codeine in conjunction with ibuprofen. I'm not sure what it's like down under, though.

Like some other people mentioned, a pretty common anesthesia combo is IV fentanyl/midazolam. If they're going to put you out they'll probably use that. It really depends on what doctor is doing the dentistry. Make your fears known, though. Like my grandmother says, the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

You can call the dentists office like I did and just tell them you're extremely nervous and was wondering if they offer sedation/anesthesia. Here in my city we have a few "Sedative Dentistry" places who will knock you out for a cleaning if you want...at 200$ a pop. Maybe you can find something of that nature?

I'm going for a check up first to assess the situation, and I'll let my fears known there... This squeaky wheel needs a lot of oil.

^If that's an option...I would really go for it.

I personally don't see how they could do that procedure without full anesthesia.

I had 2 wisdom teeth extracted the same day with nothing but lidocaine and aspirin afterwards. It's standard procedure here. The toothache was unbearable for one week and a half. Didn't know at the time that codeine was OTC in my country.

That pre-check up appointment should ease some of your fears. They'll give you a run-down of the procedure and all that, and that's when you should probably voice your concerns. If you're going to any place decent, you'll probably have a much better experience than you expect.

Most dentists don't like people fearing them and they try really hard to make you comfortable as possible.

Most dentists.

I hope my experience is not like yours lou... Well I know it wont be... As I would run screaming from the office...

I'll book the first appointment when the dentist opens today. I'll outline all my fears and well... They'll see the anxiety its causing me...

My name is the french variation... I hope that will help.

As I am the direct descendent of a Scottish guy who got deported to Tasmania for stealing a bolt of silk though... And on the other side from one of the scottish clans. Perhaps some scottish bravery will win through?

On a side note, you're supposed to abstain from smoking for 2 days to avoid getting a dry socket (which I hear is really painful) as well as avoid drinking out of a straw...

Just thought I might tell you cause I know you smoke quite a bit...

I really hope I don't get a dry socket because I don't see me being able to avoid smoking lol...I might just need to go and get nicotine patches and slap 2 of them on me right before the procedure lol...
