Wisdom Teeth: Dental fear, Anaesthesia & Pain Killers.

I've gotten all wisdom teeth pulled. They numb you up real good. I dont have insurance or anything so no hospital or any of that. It's not that bad, it hurts after the lidocane (sp?) wears off..they always prescribed me lorcet 10's and only about 12-16 of them. I never gotten percocets or anything stronger than hydrocodone. It's not that bad i swear unless you are absolutely a wuss then I think the small narcotic script and ibuprofen or tylenol will be just fine. Good luck and hope all goes well.

You say this, but some of us already have some pretty decent opioid tolerances and Vicodin+all the stuff I'm Rx'ed is just enough to help with the pain I'm in before the teeth get cut out of my face lol...

I'm going to move this over to AusDD so that I can get a better idea of other Australians experiences with this.

I think the standard in Australia is local anaesthetic (like a numbing agent) and maybe some codeine tablets if you're lucky for afterwards (probably you'll get a paracetamol/codeine mix though) Not sure about nitrous for wisdom teeth.

If you can find the right dentist you'll get much better treatment...do your parents/friends see any 'good' dentists?

I need to go to the dentist in the next month or so and I'm bricking myself. I'm terrified of the dentist....Lucky I've got a good doctor that will write a note saying I've got problems with anxiety and I'm ok with benzos.

I'm sure it won't be even half as bad as I'm building it up in my head to be.

Not sure about your predicament with possible benzo tolerance.

I do know there's these dentists that see super-rare cases of like insane phobia or people that got raped etc. People that are victims of rape would find the regular dentist experience hard you'd imagine...maybe you could find one of these?

I'd recommend not dosing up beforehand on something that the dentist doesn't know about...that's just asking for trouble I think.

You got a good GP? Psychiatrist? Councillor?

I have a fantastic GP and psychologist. Currently on a sabbatical from psychiatry due to them just pushing insane amounts of psych meds and labels on me. Seeing as I am coping far better without any psychiatric medication I am avoiding them like the plague.

I figured codeine would be the standard here what with how strict we are about narcotic pain killers. Sigh.

I dont think a local anaesthetic will do the job for me... If I am not unconscious it is going to end badly for all parties involved... I'm not sure why I have this intense phobia, considering some of the things I've put my body through :|. Just never having had anything at all done to my teeth exacerbates the problem...

I recently had one of my top wisdoms pulled out in the chair. I TOTALLY understand your fear.

I had my bottom 2 pulled out in hospital under a general about 18 years ago. This was the way I would have prefered to go again due to my anxiety about it. I had experienced others in the chair when young so was terrified at the thought/

My tooth had a hole in it and the pain THAT was causing was full on. It came in waves but when it was on it was ON. My dentist said it really had to go and as I was going away on holidays I new It would be stupid to risk a week of pain so the appointment was made and I was scared shitless for the 4 days leading up to it.

The day I walked in the to dentists I thought I was actually going to cry! I was taken straight in and they applied via a cotton ball some numbing solution. They then got me to gargle some mouth wash.. and as I once knew a guy who made coke out of the stuff that was shipped to Thailand to dentist for mouth wash, I rinced every last drop! Hey it was probably your everyday mouthwash but I wasnt taking any chances by not having it all.

Then came the needle. The dentist told me that was going to be the worst part and I was like.. yeah right! So one to the outer gum and then the one that was just inside the roof of my mouth. If you have ever had a piercing or a tattoo the pain really rates VERY VERY low compared to that.

Then the moment came. Once everything was numb, it was exactly as he had said. A lot of pushing upwards, then wriggle wriggle, pushing up wriggle wriggle and in I would say under 3min the tooth was out. I must admit I did feel a little giddy but that actually started when I had the needles.

I left the clinic within 15 min of walking in the door. Drove myself home, even though I had someone on standby in case I didnt think I could.

When I got home I was probally totally pain free for about 1.5 - 2hrs and had even thought of going to the zoo... then the pain began. It was pretty bad but was managed with some codeine and paracetamol 15/500. I took minimal that day, spent a bit of time in bed snoozing, was fine by that night and then took nothin at all the next.

I too was the biggest sook about the whole thing, but I am happy to say it really was not even close to being as bad as I had expected, thank god as I still have one to come. I am so glad I did it as the pain I tollerated for months was not worth it.

Well i've had seven piercings, but it's not the pain that is going to bother me at all. I'd probably run before he jabbed me with a needle in the mouth and pulled my teeth in the chair...

^ I was horrified by the entire thought of it too and had said to people I would give birth 4 more times than have to endure a tooth out in the chair.

My fears were unwarrented and the experience was much better than anticipated (I even patted the dentist on the back as I left and said good job) so I now take the above statement back. haha

I'm actually surprised to hear you got a wisdom tooth out in a chair popeyes mate, I thought it was always a surgical procedure.

Tripman given you have complicated wisdom teeth I don't think there's any doubt they'll recommend you to see an oral surgeon, who'll take them out under a general anaesthetic. I had all 4 of mine out that way a few years back. Honestly, it wasn't that scary. It was like any other operation in that the last thing I remember is being wheeled into the room, getting the anaesthetic, then waking up an hour or two later looking like a bulldog.

I was prescribed panadeine forte afterwards and though I played up my symptoms he told me pretty much point blank that you don't get anything stronger than that for a wisdom teeth extraction. It might be bullshit, I don't know, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting anything stronger than codeine afterwards though. I was probably lucky I even got that since I showed up for the operation high on smack, which was pretty stupid, and I felt like a naughty schoolgirl telling the surgeon about it before I went in (I was scared it might interact with the anaesthetic or something).

Personally, I don't think opiates are necessary for the pain of getting your wisdom teeth out.

Im about to have one of my top wisdom teeth pulled.
At the intake appointment I got 8 tramadol....but only because i already have chronic pain and had all my doctors notes with me....
After I had my bottom two out a few years ago I got sent home with paracetamol and anti-biotics!
But this is at the public hospital, private dentists might be more caring/generous

Got my top wisdom teeth out, didn't feel a thing but the tool they used made lots of noise. Oral surgeon gave me 30 7.5/500 Vicoden. Got my bottom wisdom teeth out 5 years later, less of an ordeal but the recovery was definitely more involved - pain and swelling. That guy gave me 60 5/500 Vicoden and 600 mg Ibuprofen. Just get it done, it's a fast procedure it will be over before you know it.

I got my wisdom teeth removed 4 years ago. As for the surgery you will be knocked out cold and wake up not feeling too sore as the morphine will still be in your system.

It is quite painful for the next week or two. I was only given panadeine fort (30mg codeine plus panadol). I found it necessary to take nurofen plus and smoke some weed on occassion. you wont be able to eat things that require chewing for a while, and kissing properly can be difficult. I had compacted teeth removed which is more painful. the side of my mouth was swollen for half a week.,

honestly, though it is painful, it is far from debilitating. if your really in trouble just do a cold water extraction. I doubt you can get anything stronger than codeine, have yet to hear of anyone getting endone.

My ex had her wisdom teeth pulled 2 weeks ago.
I asked her what they used to put her to sleep, she said she didn't remember.

But she did have a box of endone (oxycodone and APAP) afterwards, I then advised her of why she feels so good on them.
;)

She's not the abusing type, she needed it for pain though.
She had a sore mouth when opening her jaw for about a week afterwards.

She had to eat soft baby-food/bannana type stuff.

That was in QLD.
Still wish I found out what they used to knock her out, I think they injected her with something, I remember asking for gas because I was fucking sick of needles when I went for surgery (except that wasn't at the dentist, that was at the hospital)

If you are anxious then there several options.

Valiums the night before and an hour or so before your appointment for me is more placebo. Sure you'll have a happy glow but when push comes to shove you will know when the needle is coming. Next is nitrous which is fine for 50% of nervous patients and most kids. You still need a needle to numb the area but the edge of terror is taken off for most people.

If you are concerned about the noise and the taste of blood then you are best off seeking out someone who does "twilight sedation" (which is getting harder and harder to do in house because of government "nanny" rules) or bite the bullet and have a general anaesthetic. A few general dentist will offer this but unless you have a large enough list financially it isn't worth it for one or two patients. Instead most will refer you to an oral surgeon. You will also have the extra fees of the anaesthetist and the theatre hire.

Post op you will get nothing more than codiene (usually panadiene forte) combined with ibuprofen (nurafen). The best thing you can also do is ice your face to reduce swelling, particularly if they have to cut away a lot of bone. No good crying that you have a high tolerance, no one is going to give a shit. They are hardly going to change the prescribing schedule just becuase you were selfish and used up all your resistence for recreational enjoyment. You paid the piper I'm afraid.

Upper wisdom teeth are usually a piss of piss... 4-5min top. I wouldn't even call them wisdom teeth to be fair. The lowers usually cause more discomfort afterwards when they are lying sideways and ned to be sectioned or bone removed.

I actually just had mine taken out today!
Let me tell you, if someone saw me they would've thought I was getting brutally tortured lol I was crying and shaking violently, the heart rate monitor was going crazy... it was awful. I had laughing gas which made me feel fucked up in a bad way and my mouth being numb from the needles freaked me out even more, I was a complete mess. I hate needles too and for some reason I thought the second needle was the surgeon ripping my tooth out lol so I screamed and I almost fainted.

I finally calmed down with another try at the laughing gas and I didn't feel a thing except for some pulling because of the numbing. The procedure was not painful at all, only scary at the thought of what was going on in my mouth.

I was a little swollen right after the procedure but I've been feeling surprisingly alright. Eating kindof sucks and talking and laughing is a little uncomfortable but it's really not too bad overall.

I got amoxicillan, strong ibuprofen and percs prescribed. You'll probably get those or tylenol 3's from what I hear. You can also get it done at the hospital and/or be put to sleep, probably a good idea if your as terrified as I was and with your panic attacks. My dentist didn't offer that option and I knew I would be scared but I didn't think I'd freak out the way I did.

I hope all goes well for you, there's nothing to be scared of! (Lol says me who almost died in the chair today)

This is in North America btw

hehe.. i had mine out ages ago when i had one of my first real jobs. I recall going to work the next day with cotton wool in between the gaps and changing the bloody things every few hrs. It was painful for a while as far as i can recall, and i couldn't talk properly, but there hasn't been any problems since with them.

well the biggest concern is that if you do get a full anesthesis you wont be knocked out as you have a benzo tolerance. you will have to tell the anesthesist he might have to redose several times....dont forget!!!!

A few months back i had to go to the dentist due to having nearly all my teeth damaged from a codeine addiction (i cannot swallow pills so i would put 10-15 at once in my mouth with water and let it dissolve - this fucked my teeth). When i was there they done some tooth x-rays and found that 2 of my front teeth were massively infected and the infection was travelling up my face! They used heaps of numbing needles around the area but when they pulled them, due to having whats know as a "Hot Tooth" the infection actually blocked the numbing action (the area was number but it didnt stop pain)...so as they pulled the teeth out i felt FULL PAIN, in the few seconds it took to pull them out i was in so much pain that i actually sweat my bodies silhouette on the table i was laying on....ive never felt anything like it in my life O_O

Now the doctor was actually shocked coz apparently it doesnt happen too often (least not in his office).

Edit: Due to the drug addiction i had they couldnt give me any pain killers..but surprisingly enough after the numbing wore off i got ZERO pain, i didnt get any pain at all in the following days...i didnt need to use so much as a paracetamol pill, i still cannot believe that after experiencing more pain then id ever felt in my life, that there was NO residual pain afterwords or during the healing process....NONE!

It's not that they couldn't give you painkillers so much as they wouldn't, as like I said earlier I got pescribed panadeine forte despite admitting I used smack at the time.

And I just have to ask...why did you dissolve the pills in your mouth rather than a glass of water?!
