Whites Smoke Pot, but Blacks Are Arrested

watch the tv show "Cops". 9 times out of 10, when an afro-american is suspected of holding, he'll do something idiotic like back talking a cop. everyone knows you'll never win an argument with a cop. and when you come in contact with people of authority, speaking "negro dialect" is not going to positively impact the outcome of the situation.
i believe racial profiling & discrimination occur in this country, don't get me wrong. but a little respectful discourse with an officer can many times diffuse the situation.
no offense, just my opinion.

^ fair point ..... i guess sometimes - some people - dont do them selves any favours - i still say racism is alive and kicking ...

we all know it is... cops are just people in a uniform

do any of us really believe they are any different? - what makes them immune from the flaws so common in humanity??

I agree with flacky. Crime is correlated with socio economic status, not race. If the poor in a community were predominantly white, then they'd be the ones getting arrested. Police patrol where crime is more visible. Of course upper class and middle class people are still committing crime, but they are often doing it behind closed doors and have the resources to fight a case.

The poor are easier targets for police because they have less resources and by and large have less education. Or you know its entirely possible that the poor commit more crime per capita than the middle class.

it was a very poor, ignorant choice to use the show "Cops" as an example here. the viewers only see what's edited for consumption. my bad.

destroy the system! our government are corrupt racist prejudice criminals who need to be brought to justice!!

it iz a cops fault if they arrest people 4stuff like weed, there responsible4thier abusive behavior including becoming cops in the 1st place nazis were told by thier government that waz ok2. and people have a right2there attitudez without being arrested4them.its not good2b ne color in america.

This is a good point. "Just following orders" is not an excuse that people accept for the behavior of Nazi soldiers.

But when U.S. Soldiers or police officers obey unjust laws, people absolve them of responsibility using the same excuse.

(Note - I am NOT equating soldiers and police officers with German Nazis).

However, I have a hard time comprehending how someone can engage in a profession where he must to bad thigns that are against his own beliefs or code of ethics.

fuck them beasts!!!!!! but as someone said earlier prohibition and racism go together like butt cheeks. esp. when it comes to marijuana. in the early 1900's they were sayin that the only ppl that smoked were blacks and latinos and when they smoked it made them crazy and it made them wanna rape white women all kinda bullshit

I don't buy this 'racial profiling' twaddle.

Of course, simply comparing various cases with disparate outcomes wrt racial demographics at face value is misleading, because e.g., blacks and latinos often have more extensive ciminal records than whites, or the infractions they commited were mixed up somehow with violence or some other secondary charges. In the absence of more detailed information about case specifics, I am going to call BS; overzealous PC troglodytes huffing and puffing about 'lingering racism' to score diversity points with some editorial board at a NY "Lifestyle" magazine who would otherwise pass them up for a weekly column contract.

there are probably just as many cops getting shot at as racist who cares

What I've stated is a based on basic principles of statistics.

Arrests occur where there are more police and more crimes. If the people who live in those places tend to be a certain race, then they will tend to be arrested more.

Fuck it, forget statistics, this is basic common sense.

"The police go where crime is" is the basic premise of this argument, I believe. I find 2 major flaws in this line of reasoning:

1. If the law enforcement are physically concentrated in one geographic location, then they are naturally going to witness to more crimes occurring. This is not a case of police being called to an area... this is police posting up and actively patrolling for crime. If I was paid to actively search any neighborhood for crime, I'd like to believe I'd find it. Especially, if all my homies were getting paid to be there, too... Regardless of the Socio-Economic Status of the particular neighborhood.

2. The "Crimes" we're talking about are "Blue Collar Crimes" which is not crime in it's entirety. Go to the worst neighborhood in your city and tell me how much embezzling, fraud, and insider trading are going on there. These are not only crimes but often times crimes with a much greater scope because the amount of money and lives involved is much higher. The embezzlement of money from the Federal Social Security, alone, affects everyone in the nation. For some reason, I don't think the people stealing that money live in "High Crime Neighborhoods".

According to the last updated census I read(around a year and a half ago) This country is still more than 81% white and yet the criminal justice system is overwhelmed by the amount of minorities which it processes and imprisons. In the country that has more prisoners than any other, the races of those prisoners are almost directly inverted to the proportion of the country's actual demographics. Very questionable to say the least.

I live in Indiana now but I have lived in New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Northern California, Southern California, and Kentucky as well and I feel that this is more than a "New York Thing". I'm also half-White and half-Black Latino and have no innate reason to point fingers when it's not warranted.

And swmo's comment about "Negro Dialect" is crazy as hell. Firstly, (linguistically speaking) there's quite possibly a greater range of variation in the speech patterns and colloquialisms of american blacks than any other racial group in the country despite them being less than 13% of the population.
As well as the concept that something as trivial as method of communication should justify improper treatment at the hands of law enforcement is nothing less than silliness in and of itself. The concept that "Negro Dialect" is wrong when communicating with people we pay to protect us is simply prejudice.

I alone can go from the most eloquent and "well spoken" young man with a vocabulary to challenge post-graduate students... to the hoodest nigga off in the east side of nap... in moments.
My closet has mad street fits as well as tailored suits. Should I make sure that I'm not wearing "Negro Fashion" the next time the police stop me to tell me that I "Fit a description" like they have done and continue to do?
I imagine "Negro Appearance" also qualifies as justifiable probable cause.

@ coldbleed - How many Blacks are on the Board of Directors at Pfizer, Roche, Lily or any of the other multinational pharmaceutical companies that sell more drugs worldwide than all the niggas in that same world combined?

If any of you study back when marijuana first became illegal and the DEA started forming, you would recognize it was a racial-opportunist situation. Government saw Mexicans and African-Americans using marijuana, they wanted to get their friends jobs so they started the DEA. And the quagmire to this day continues..... As on Obama supporter I'd like to tell him he was a complete dipshit when confronted with the most popular internet question to him being "Will you legalize pot to help increase the economy" he laughed and shrugged it off like it was a plea to legalize cannabalism.

There is a black man for President........ America's racism over blacks is over people! Been free for over 150 years, and still bitching. Immigrant's, who are more hated than blacks come to America, as did my family about 17 years ago, and now we are climbing toward the upper middle class, came with no language, no money, only will power and a decent education, DECENT, not great. In America anyone can make it, so stop bitching and finish high school. I know a white kid who is 18 from the suburbs who wakes up at 4 am to go to work, then to high school, plus is a pot head. All you need is motivation, and I know dan well alot of black people agree with me, if you dont like the situation your in then do something about it, dont just complain and move the blame onto something, or someone else. PEACE!

Look at the 1950's and 40's anti-marijuana propaganda, it only involves mostly white people, these laws, should be rearanged, and why do you think police target minorities, even though it's morally wrong, the chance that they have a warrant, or other drugs/weapons on them than a white person is much, much higher, thats just the truth, thats why they profile, it makes sense to do their job better.

What an ignorant post. For starters, the idea that a Black president signifies the end of racism is absurd. Do you expect all the racists in the criminal justice system to say, "Oh, wait, Obama was elected? I hereby renounce my racism! I have seen the error of my ways!" ????

As for being "free" for 150 years - Which year was the Civil Rights act passed?
