there is something about the 3rd mario on nes that brings back waves of memories. the strange music, colors... other than that one i dont even like video games.

By "Mario game," Do we mean just the games where mario is the main character, I.E. the super mario Brothers games? If so I think Super Mario Brothers 3 and Super Mario world SNES stand tall above the rest.

But if we mean "any game with the mario characters," then HOW is Super Smash brothers N64 not on this list? That is the greatest game ever created!

You need three friends through it's definably a social get together thing. Lightning strike on Wario raceway just as your friends going over the big jump is like stabbing him in his heart and twisting the blade.

"Mario games", in my opinion at least, are games where Mario is the playable or star character. So the Wario, Yoshi, and SSB games dont count to me, neither does Luigi's manshion.
My vote is Super Mario 64 although SMB3 is a close second.

They're great games, no doubt, but calling them "Mario" games is a stretch.

Mario 64 had the most perfect dificulty curve Iv ever come across in a game. Always enjoyable and never frustrating. Between that and FFVII for best game Iv ever played.

Well, yeah. Does it really matter though? The Four games up there that have the most votes are winning by a landslide. No other game has more than 2 or 3 votes. It doesn't really matter How many mario-related games are on the list that aren't true Mario games.

I actually thought Mario 64 was weak; the terrible play control made the game as frustrating as it was fun.

Why do games with no votes have a bar?

I think I missed it because I would have expected it to have more votes. Hell, the game has tournaments with cash prizes.

EDIT: I actually missed it because I saw Super Smash Borhters Melee down below and I figured the smash brothers games would all be listed together.
