Which drug is the most damaging to the brain?

damage from alcaho comes from depletion of essential vitamins and minerals,thats where the "alcaholics" start to shake ,get anxiety ,amnesia(short term) ...messed up sleeping paterns,fatigue , ...MAJOR alcaholic like ME showed traits of actually being mentally ill ...i would think things and they seemed reall i was paranoid out the ass of family and friends,had thoughts of killing people....

i wouldnt say alcahol is the WORS on the brain ,as its HARD on the whole body ,pancreas,liver kidneys ,heart ... i thought i was either going to die from stroke...heart failure ,or kidney failure when i was withdrawing from alcahol after drinking non stop till the time i woke up till the time i passed out for 1-1/2 months ...as i looked at myself with BLODDSHOT eyes and saw the half a cup or so of blood i just vomited i said its enough of this poisen

the damge done by alcahol can be fixed none the less ,all the anxiety ,depression,liver problems(can be really helped)....by simply replacing what the alcahol TOOK away from the body ..... alcaholism is IN THE brain ....oce you have been through what i went through 10 times or so ...near dealth withdrawls ...you start to think WHY IS THIS HAPPENING and want to research it.... and for anyone who like knowledge ,and reading ..i suggest you go www.healthrecovery.com there ,you will learn things about alcahol you would not have imagined ...

yup i totally agree with ya.....alcohol hangovers are the WORST!!! and yea id take a meth hangover over a mdma hangover anyday....coke, acid, and ket, meh yea day after isnt the best, but its not bad either...
 
If you want a technical answer to your question, I would have to say dioxin

Well if you want to get technical, dioxin isn't a drug (of abuse or otherwise) - there are plenty of highly toxic compounds out there like MPTP, but as they're not specifically used as drugs no-one else felt to mention them.

Er, no it can't. Once neurons in the CNS die, they don't get replaced; if they did, things like Parkinson's disease wouldn't exist as you'd just grow a new substantia nigra. When enough braincells are killed by alcohol you develop a dementia and the related Korsakoff's (sp?) psychosis which is pretty much irreversible. That's why serious piss heads seem fucked even if they dry out and avoid alcohol for the rest of their life.

Most of the above drugs have specific targets in the CNS where they cause damage whereas alcohol is far less discriminating and destroys neurons throught the brain leading to motor, congnitive, memory, emotional and a whole load of other problems

yea ,i knew somone would post somthing like that ,recovery alcaholics that dont replace what the alcahol has taking away WILL still be that way ....no doubt ,the people at the healthrecovery center have done the research to and studies to PROVE this ,and it took 30 years to do it so i think they know what they are talking about when they say you can recover from alcahol ,might not get all the cells back ,but i garuante they will get there life back

it fucking mind boggle'n ...if you dont believ me call the people up and have a debate i challenge anyone ...they know their shit cause they have FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE and document to prove....if i didnt do the program then i would be right where i was every other time i tried to stop...2 days on the vitamins i was laughing again ,as to 2 days before i was in a stupor,so fucking bad all i could do was stare into space and create scenarios where i was happy ,7 days of not sleeping was fucking killing me mentally...i couldnt think straight enough to form a sentence ...people were freaked out cause i was so different like i was somone different in front of them...... and i was ..a week on the program and i was 3/4 's whole ,i could sleep ,eat ..laugh WALK ,hold a glass of water with out spilling the contents from shaking...hell i have first hand experience that this works ,and i have been binge drinking since 15 i am 23 now..so i have years of drinking under my belt ....so i know

So which is worse, alcohol or meth?

MDXX compounds can get pretty nasty as you get an overproduction of hydrogen peroxide, and therefore lots of free radicals - but that is more molecular disintegration rather than straight up neuron loss, which may be repairable. I would imagine all serotonergic drugs did this - including methamphetamine, and the other speeds. Although meth has a stronger affinity of many stimulants to serotonin.

It seems like meth would cause this trouble like MDXX, plus some.
 
I would have to say inhalants (gasoline, whiteout, scotchguard, etc...). All that shis terrible for your brain. Heavy alcohol usage and meth probably come in second. Just my opinion.

Those are just a few of the articles (univerity referenced studies) examining damage caused to the CNS in alcoholics (including ex-alcoholics who remain abstinent). If the alcoholism wasn't too prolonged & too heavy usage then people can recover a lot of activity w.r.t. cognitive function etc because the brain can 're-wire' itself, but never 100% of the functioning of the brain before alcohol addiction. This also leaves the person statistically much more likely to develop pre-senile dementia, alzheimers and other degenerative diseases than people without a history of not using alcohol, because of the extent of neuronal damage. Of course some people are so badly damaged from their alcohol use that there's no serious improvement even with vit B suppliments etc.

You may get a life worth living back after stopping being an alcoholic (ie continuing to use alcohol), but you'll never get back to being the person you were before the alcohol use - that's purely down to the damage caused by alcohol

Their livers change alcohol into acetaldehyde at twice the normal rate, while the subsequent conversion of acetaldehyde into acetic acid is abnormally slow and takes twice as long as usual. The accumulation of acetaldehyde damages liver cells, which become abnormally large as they strive to get rid of the accumulated acetaldehyde. This damage affects the liver's ability to absorb and utilize the nutrients needed for good health. To make matters worse, excess acetaldehyde escapes the liver and travels through the bloodstream to the heart, where it can be very damaging (it interferes with the protein synthesis of the heart muscle). It also reaches the brain, where it blocks proper neurotransmitter action in creating normal feelings, behavior, and memory. The unused natural neurotransmitters begin to build up and combine with the acetaldehyde to form potent psychoactive compounds called tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs), which are remarkably similar to opiates. THIQs fit in the same receptor sites in the brain as natural pain-killing chemicals called endorphins and such narcotics as morphine and heroin."

Our biochemical repair program is built around two premises

1.Addressing the substances that must be kept out of the alcoholic's body (including alcohol and other drugs, such as nicotine, caffeine, and refined sugars)

2.Addressing the substances that must be restored to the brain and body (chemicals depleted by alcohol.)

We begin with a physical exam and laboratory testing to identify where damage has occurred. Clients are also screened for vulnerability to substances that can cause cravings for alcohol

At the outset we explain why it's so important that clients avoid caffeine, nicotine, and refined sugars in addition to alcohol. We were amazed at how much coffee our clients had been drinking; some were up to forty cups a day. Caffeine is a drug. Although it recently received a clean bill of health for those concerned about heart disease and cancer, it can complicate or retard recovery from alcohol. Caffeine pumps a lot of adrenaline into the bloodstream. This temporarily provides energy-the morning lift so many people get from their first cup of coffee. Adrenaline also dumps stored glycogen (sugar) into the bloodstream, which triggers an outpouring of insulin. This caffeine-triggered rush of sugar and insulin is no help for alcoholics attempting to stabilize their glucose metabolism.

Foods containing refined sugars are also off-limits because they intensify hypoglycemic symptoms (often described as "dry-drunk" behaviors).

Smoking and using snuff or chewing tobacco is bad for everyone, but many alcoholics already have a lower than normal resistance to disease and do not need any more health hazards than they have already accumulated.

Few treatment programs require clients to avoid these substances on the theory that patients should not have to give up anything more than alcohol. It is a sympathetic attitude we don't think our clients can afford.

From the start, our treatment results were dramatic. Even clients who had failed to recover repeatedly in the past did very well. After two years, we knew we were on the right track. Most clients recovered both their sobriety and their health."
 
Go read about alcohol !!!! It is terrible on the brain with extensive use. Meth is very bad too. I have a freind who smoked the shit almost everyday for a whole year and did tons of rolls and now he is sober and i dont think he will ever be the same. He has the worst attention span i have ever seen in anyone

not sayin it isnt bad i know ,try binge'n on it for 30+ days as much as possible without eating,no sleep but passing out ...no fluids except alcahol ....i mean i ate ,but only ramen noodle or chicken noodle soup ,nothin really stayed down after about a week of doing nothin but staying drunk....

yea i know alcahol is bad on the brain believe me....but skid row alcaholics got better with the help of healthrecovery center...... just a betetr option than "drying out" ...i hate that word
 
There has to be a differentiation between physical damage and psychological damage.

Physical damage is the easier to quantify. Brain scans and post-mortem tissue analysis can provide scientific proof of the specific damage that particular drugs can cause.

Heavy MDxx use seems certain to cause physical damage to serotonergic neurons, allegedly due to the evil action of the hydrogen peroxide produced during the break-down of the dopamine taken up into these cells after serotonin depletion, though it is currently impossible to prove this conclusively.

Heavy ketamine use is known to cause serious physical damage to the brain. Scans and post-mortem analyses show scars known as Olney's Lesions.

And anything that raises your blood pressure is significant. You'd have to agree that brain haemorrhages are pretty damaging to the brain.

Psychological damage is less easy to quantify. The heavy use of many drugs is known to cause psychological problems, be they persistent involuntary effects (e.g. HPPD) or addictions.

I think you have to ask this question in two ways.

Physical damage. Psychological damage.

Not in humans. The same compound can have dramatically different effects in different mamallian species. Feed rats MPTP and they show no signs of neural damage. Let a human have an encounter with a tiny amount & they'll develop the most severe Parkinson's disease that you're likely to see because the MPTP is metabolized to a compound that destroys dapaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra.
