What do you guys think is the most damaging drug to the brain. Meth..... maybe E? I dont know personally..... Ecstasy damage has been exagerrated and I dont have a lot of experience with meth, but those are the drugs that come to mind when I think of really bad for the mind. :|

i know that meth has been proven to be neurotoxic with long term abuse.. i duno about casual use though.

I'd vote for alcohol - it does a good job of fucking neurons all over your body

Really? that bad? I thought moderate amounts of it had no negative brain "damage".. I drink red wine usually about a glass or so a day. What sort of stress does it put on the neurons? oxidative?

For other drugs, I'd say meth is #1 of the most common ones.

I've also seen a few people that got really kinda fucked up on pure MDMA over a period of a year or so. It took them a long time to recover mentally.

You guys have to differentiate between physical brain damage and psychological damage. For example, somebody who smokes weed everyday for 5 months may not get brain damage, but might suffer from serious concentration/memory problems for a long while afterwards....

IMHO Alcohol, Meth, MDMA, and Cocaine are known to cause irreversible changes in brain chemistry is suspectable indiviudals with long term, chronic, or heavy use.

PCP.

Next, meth - which is even worse if it has alot of adulterants and other chemicals in the mixture, which is seen in clandestine methamphetamine.

Not any other drugs are really too bad unless your talking about heavy, irresponsible use. Ecstasy can be damaging if you don't take enough antioxidants and do it too much, although the damage resultant from ecstasy use is said to be repairable.

Alcohol then meth. Are we talking purely physical deterioration, psycho deterioration? or both? depending on which/what ... its a fine balance between these two chems if you ask me..
then again.. .there are a grip of "RC's" that can and do fuck people the hell up if taken enough.

Difluoroethane, ie. duster. Terrible for the brain, and perhaps worse for the body.

Any Inhalant (Naptha, Gasoline etc.) is MORE damaging than the drugs you've listed :) (except N2O, O2 and such ;))

Everything in moderate amounts is not so damaging. The problem is that with some substances it is hard to keep your use to moderate level. Such are meth, coke, alcohol and tobbaco. I think that the most damaging substances are alcohol, inhalants and tobbaco.

Ah yea, can't forget inhalants.

Inhalants.
PCP.
Meth.
MDXX

Alcohol is more damaging to the body, not necessarily the brain.

tobacco is brain damaging? what? tobacco has been shown to reduce alcohol-induced brain damage in the olfactory bulb. Whereas alcohol has been shown to damage the perirhinal cortex, entorhinal cortex, ventral dentate gyrus. I mean, tobacco can cause fetal brain damage, but other than that?

DXM is a lot less damaging than PCP, but since its in the same drug class there is always the whole "Olney's Lesions" Theory to think about. I've never done meth, mdma or pcp, the worst effects I've got from a drug were from salvia (lungs were filled with tarrish shit for weeks, and I was having occasional moments for days after use where I would start to slur my words and feel brainless for a few seconds.) and Nitrous (Much worse lung problems than salvia weed or cigs, and some temporary brain damage that lasted maybe 5-6 months after quitting, such as lack of coordination and concentration, feeling slightly disorientated from time to time.) Its funny that the safer drugs when it comes to negative effects on the brain are the Best drugs, Opiates and Benzos, and of course some others that are riskier such as weed and mushrooms are still not very bad unless your eating shrooms every week or something. Either way, all drugs effect the body and mind in different ways, and to a certain point, in different doses, so It is really hard to say which drug is the worse all together.

I'd have to agree w/ F&B, that overuse of ethanol is VERY damaging to the brain, and other nervous tissue- although the others mentioned (esp. volatile inhalents), can't be too good either.
I distinctly remember attending a seminar by a neurologist, who stated that plain old alcohol was at the top of the list. Which would explain "wet-brain".
Don't quote me on this, as I'm not sure the figure is exactly correct, but it's damn close...He stated that ethanol kills approx. 140,000 neurons/ ounce (shot, standard glass of wine, or a 12 oz. beer- although I have an instinct that beer is probabaly better for you than distilled spirits- or that could be my love of a good Irish Stout talking)...
Also there are many oxidative free radicals produced from the metabolism of ethanol, most notably acetaldehyde, which can do nothing but contribute to the destruction of neurons...:\

In my opinion, inhalants do have a severe negative effect upon the brain. This is likely due to the replacement of oxygen that occurs when someone is huffing, regardless of substance.

Methamphetamine has been shown to be highly neurotoxic in high levels, mainly damaging the dopaminerginic receptors and preventing them from releasing the proper amounts of said neurotransmitter. Many former meth addicts report having to be on long term medication to counteract the severe depression that often accompanies discontinuation of methamphetamine.

Alcohol is one that I would think, but I dont have any knowledge of any neurotoxic effects upon any specific region of the brain. We all know it affects the Gamma Aminoburytic Acid receptors, hence the loss of inhibition and coordination. I would be interested to read some literature on the topic of the long term neurotoxic effects, if any that ethanol causes to the brain.
