last night i was on my own so took the opportunity to pump my two favourite lynch films loudly through 5.1 while having the newer tv do an active conversion into 3D. eraserhead and mulholland drive. .... my review: fuck yeah.


last week i saw "ghostwatch", an early 90's mockumentary (kinda blair witch-ish, but way before that trend) which freaked people out. some kids got ptsd from it, and one guy committed suicide after it had originally aired. it's nothing great by today's standards, but it's a fun romp. Nice seeing lister from red dwarf.

Was Daddy a sequel to Secretary? The overwhelming theme being consequences.

Watched Before Sunset last night. I have a different view of the first movie (Before Sunrise) after viewing the second and as a whole I think these were fantastic movies. You couldn't watch the sequel without seeing the first movie. Well, I mean you could, but it wouldn't make much sense. The first one almost seemed like somewhat of a fantasy where everything was overly-romanticized and just perfect. The second film seemed to add some realism to that touch of fantasy. The dialogue was superb and performed well, and overall I found the two movies worth watching. Funny how the second film changed my opinion about the first film so much, but they ended up being some great movies.

Depends where you are in life,. The second film is IMO better . The first one tries and does quite well to portray that youthful passion and innocence/freedom in a way, optimism. But I thought it was a too simple. .

The second one is brilliant. And pretty much almost any person can reflect to the story at some point. In the first one I didnt get that so much. The second one just flows , the train of thought is logical, it just makes sense. No need to see the first film.
Theres a third one out as far as I know but from the trailer it seems a bit forced. Hope Im mistaken.

Somebody Up There Likes Me

an easier, indie version of Synecdoche, New York. not a novel concept nor phenomenal presentation, but it isn't bad.
 
one of the first few lines is something about denying mortality on a level. ends up a reprise.

this movie doesn't tackle much. touches on a lot.
 
Pacific Rim. So...so disappointing. :(
Perhaps take 30 minutes from the lame character development and focus more on the backstory.

it is what it's making fun of? or what is redeeming about this? it makes reference to Taxi Driver and nabokov's Lolita. he kills his quilty. i don't think that means anything. this is a terrible movie.
 
Paris Is Burning

because Kenickie mentioned it in the fashion thread. this set my expectations a little high. i was interested in the beginning and the end; the hour of drag queens dancing in between was not so entertaining. the note it ends on is star. like a badass take of The Catcher in the Rye's reaching for the golden ring on the merry-go-round.

there is nothing to this story. and the movie is about a story. elle fanning's character is supposed to be the obsession of so many different characters. i wasn't at all enamored with her character. the filmmakers couldn't take candy from a baby. it's all flat. and looks terrible. like a video game. waited a long time on this one. oh well. elle is really, really pretty. she's got this gothic in all white with pink makeup thing going on. pretty.

this movie did not make me laugh very often. or feel good. it did make noise while i drank.
 
the back to the future trilogy. ive been hosting a bedtime tribute to spielberg the past couple of weeks. its been a fantastic trip down memory and cinematic history lane. :D

48 Hrs. (1982)

Argued to be the first buddy/cop movie. Funny to see where some clichés began.


Mike Hermantraut (sp?) [Jonathan Banks] (from Breaking Bad) was one of the cops in the movie. His voice sounds exactly the same. Was funny seeing him so much younger, but still with the same dead-eyed tone and stare. As opposed to Nick Nolte whom I had just seen in Gangster Squad a few days before I saw him in 48 Hrs. His voice seems a bit different, like he's been eating sandpaper for years.
 
Prisoners

Was a pretty exhilarating thriller. Bit flawed in parts, but Gyllenhaal and Jackman's performances were pretty darn good. Gritty stuff.
 
Cannibal Apocalypse it was a bit slow, but graphic as hell. Real animal killings, Italian authoritites arrested the director for making a snuff film
