you and I will always know
Please mods forgive me if there is already a post on this I did a search and found nothing in many catagories. Anyways here goes, as many of you know absinthe is supposedly legal in the states now and in finding this out my friends and I grabbed a bottle of absinthe with a brand name zugler. We drank it as directed by various different websites with ice and sugar in moderation of course because we were unable to find proper dosing guidlines. At my third and final drink( in a 2 hour period ) I expirienced a rather giddy drunk not unlike the first time I drank alky. The odd almost trippy drunk was short lived only about twenty minutes or so and was quickly replaced with and alchohol buzz that i would expect from 3 drinks. My question is is the thujone in the drink harmfull, such as if I were to replace my normal once or twice a week drinking with absinthe and is my expirience with the drink typical? The next day I expirienced nothing more than a mild hangover not any different from a regular alchohol hangover. I mean I dont know there must be something bad about this stuff and aside from it being alchoholic and the obvious problems associated with that I can't find any other negative affects being long or short term. Any info would be greatly appreciated=D

Thanks guys it did seem a bit over rated. I definately did't have any edgar a. poe expiriences, but is that perhaps because of the probability of the more than likely weaker U.S. versions? Any european BLers out there with expiriences to the contrary?

No one is the US is allowed to distill absinthe, so how did you drink a US version?
OK fair enogh perhaps I worded that wrong. What I meant was I drank a version ok for sale in the US and if there is someone from europe that has had aversion not ok for sale here I'd like to hear their expirience

Thujone acts on the GABA receptors and exhibits very slight psychoactive effects, if any. That being said, the amount of thujone in absinthe has been highly overexaggerated and is likely to be in the range of about 5mg/L. If you wanted to drink enough to experiences thujone's effects, you'd be too drunk and wouldn't notice anyway.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection literature, "The importation of Absinthe and any other liquors or liqueurs that contain Artemisia absinthium is prohibited." So technically, there is no form of absinthe which is "ok" to inport into the US. However, as I said earlier, absinthe remains in sort of a limbo status and there are circumstances where absinthe can be imported into the US.

I really liked it. To me it was like alcohol but without the hangover and sluggish feeling.

My bf always did it for me. He got that special looking spoon, 2 sugar cubes on the spoon, poured the absinthe over it into a cup. At about half a glass, he lit the sugar cubes on fire. Let them caramelize into the cup, then add water to the rest of it. I really liked it.

Sell! Cell! Sell!

Mostly.

I have a very high alcohol tolerance,
an' even then,
with a higher wormwood concentration,
it's very easy/quote impossible
to find a balance...
...or to really tell if it's the wormwood.

I've tried it with
stronger-than-me-alcohol associates,
on diff'rent occasions...
with similar results.

An' these men coul' put away a horse.

If it was made of alcohol.

The only time I've been able to do it propa
is on (guess...) 200-250ug'ish LSD.

Done ax' how I managed to
perform the ritual...

It's fun to say you've done it, if for nothing more than the "mysterious" aspect of it. The presentation is fun to watch, without a doubt. Mainly, I drank 2 highball sized glasses of it and slept for 15 hours.

^Ah you're right. I just read something about that myself. First absinthe distilled in the states since 1912.
Don't know if it's "true" absinthe though, thujone contents need to be less then 10ppm, and it's also classified as a liqueur by the TTB(alchohol and tobacco tax and trade bureau)
But it's a start I guess :\

Its overrated :(

Agreed. Check my gallery, I have a pic of a bottle I purchased in Italy...It's anise flavored green-dyed hard liqour.....It's more of an energetic clear-headed drunk if that makes sense...

I actually like it...it's definately "rot gut" Me and a buddy took a single shot on LSD and I felt like I drank poison...I could feel the potent liqour destroying my organs...ughhhhhhhh...i like the Anise taste though!!!! it's like Jager without the sugar...It wasenjoyable tripping and provoked some interesting thought patterns......very very energetic....it's bad news when you drink a lot though...it makes good people do bad things...in Italy, I drank multiple shots of it and lost ALLLLLLLLL inhibitions...if you told me to jump a cop, I would've been operating the car before you finished the sentence....uhhhhh alcohol...stick to beer and psychs

First Absinthe distilled legally! ;)

Absinthe probably wont affect a person much differently that regular high proof UNLESS:

1. Theres a shitload of wormwood

and/or

2. Theres a shitload of other herbs

Ive never had more than a tiny glass of "official" absinthe. Only absinthe ive had in quantity was made at home by extraction with 153 proof booze, done by someone whos made it many many times. Amazing stuff, but will make people fish out into convulsions at high doses. I stay away from it these days. One HELL of a way to aquire a taste for anise!

Effects are dependent on the herbs. I dont really wish to list all of them cause im tired as hell, but one can make a brew more stimulating, sedating, or hallucinogenic with different herb combos. And strangely, the ratio of herbs is very important. For some odd reason if the ratios are off, even if theres a crap load of everything, it doesnt work right or at all.

FYI Jagermeister has alot of the same herbs absinthe commonly has! Dont know if theres wormwood, but since the recipe is a secret the Govt cant do a damn thing.
