Whats the deal with absinthe?

Got my hands on it once. I was waiting for something "crazy and kooky" to happen after I took a shot. Nothing! So I started to do coke, and E. Then the magic began.

Don't know if it's "true" absinthe though, thujone contents need to be less then 10ppm, and it's also classified as a liqueur by the TTB(alchohol and tobacco tax and trade bureau)

Yeah you gotta get it from out of the states. US absinthe isn't the real stuff.
 
Absinthe is tasty but yeah, overrated. Its partially made with wormwood which is known to have similar hallucinogenic properties similar to THC. I've needed quite a bit before I am able to notice a difference. You ever hear about its influence on the work many artists and authors like Van Gough, Degas or Hemingway? Lots of em were alcoholics and when you have a frequent flow of wormwood building up in your system the effects become much more intense. ...*hint*

I think it sort of tasted like mouthwash, but boy - back in the day I got drunk off 1 shot of that shit ^.^ Never saw any liddle humans fwying awound
 
If Absinthe was the inspiration for much of Hemingway's work, especially A Farewell to Arms, fuck drinking that stuff. haha.

Seriously though, I have tried a few imported preparations and didn't really notice anything. I think some of the effects people report are more from them rapidly consuming substantial amounts of 70+ proof liqour than anything else.
 
Point of order:

The absinthe of legend, that van Gough, Hemingway et al, is not loner legal in Europe. Most labelled preperations are just good marketing.
I have had Romanian Asinthe (home-distilled) from a farmer - it turned me into a lunatic!!

Apparently Thai vodka has a similar effect, but is also highly toxic!

Personally, I like the taste of absinthe (not straight, but mixed as classically described). However, it has been demonstrated by mass spec that the levels of thujone contained in most absinthes (even the 19th century antique varieties) are sub-threshold. Hence, it's just strong liquor. The rumors of absinthe turning people into schizophrenics were probably just like the modern rumors surrounding LSD--a big steaming pile of bullshit. People were likely affected due to the fact that they were either already hardcore alcoholics beginning to show Korpakoff's psychosis or due to impurities and heavy metals added to low-quality absinthe wannabe liquors.

three or so years ago i picked up a couple of liters of absenta tunel at the barcelona airport, was pretty cheap. it had a unique drunk to it, but nothing magical. i liked it as a strong ass liquor. and i liked the taste. but was nothing special IMO. it was like a thinner jager, but alot stronger.
 
Absinth has a speedy clear headed drunk and features a greater loss of inhibition than a grain nuetral spirit of the same strength. It will not make you hallucinate under its influence but after binges you will have dissociative spells and delerious type hallucination during the hangover. Absinthe hangovers often last two or more days for the most intense part and taper off there after as a regular alcohol hangover would. On one particular occasion I felt as if bugs were crawling under my skin constantly during the hangover. I was sleeping homeless in a park which provided the set and setting for the delirious mind set about bugs.

The key to experiencing a true absinthe high is to drink 2 - 3 glasses quickly with no other alcohol in your system. Shoot for finishing in 30 - 60 minutes. I promise you will be much further gone than if you had drank 3 shots of bacardi 151 in that time. If you drink other types of alcoholic beverages with it you will merely get drunk. I dont know why absinthe is even questioned when we takes liquors such as jagermeister and chartruese as psychoactive without question.

Absinthe - total loss of inhibition, extremely lucid intoxication, somewhat speedy feeling as if you were on a low dose of amphetamine and began drinking vodka. Despite often being distilled from grapes it has an unmistakable grain nuetral spirits clarity about it.

Chartruese Green - More dissociative in character, greater visual change than normal alcohol, less speedy and more sedated than absinthe. More lucid and euphoric than standard alcoholic beverages.

Jager - Primarily greater loss of inhibition and increased propensity for agressive/violent behavior beyond what normal alcohol would do. Most of us are familiar with other jager effects.

These liquors are certainly psychoactive beyond merely getting one drunk. The combination of herbs creates a whole greater than its parts. Much like bitters being used medicianally. Every wonder why a martini is just not the same without bitters?

Definitely overrated, but most people don't know the laws so they still think it's cool that I have it

i agree with all that you write here. i think they used copper compounds to color it green in the cheap absinthe back then. i have mixed a bottle of wormwood extract (freebie from an online vendor) into a bottle of vodka before (most disgusting thing evar!), and the effects were indistinguishable from that of the vodka alone.

i actually like the taste of real absinthe (when put in drinks or water. i have never drank it straight). i think it tastes pretty similar to other anise flavored liquor, especially ouzo.
 
Placebo IMO. I thought everything looked a bit brighter after a few shots but I reckon it's placebo. Neat absinthe makes a good "punishment" for drinking games because it tastes so bad.
 
I made a bottle of absinth once with just wodka and lots (to much) wormwood and I drank the whole bottle. The wormwood made me violently sick and puke a lot the next day but it did feel different from a normal alcohol buzz. Not worth trying at all.
 
Yeah, the way I understood it, REAL absinthe is still illegal... they just basically legalized the name "absinthe"... nothing else.
