What's so great about New Jersey?

I'll allow you to take the claim as being more violent; it's not really my thing anyway.
I'm actually writing an article on what NJ is and how it has influenced the country. It's inspired by a book written on NJ's history, and how NJ's historical accomplishments have been overshadowed because it is so close to NYC. That, and my Texan boyfriend thinks Texas is God's gift to the world. Whatever.
Anyway, if anyone has any sources I could use, that would be great. I have Jersey's history covered, but I'll still take anything on that; I am looking more for cultural influences. For example, there is a whole group of writers who left NJ, only to make movies about it. Ex. Zach Braff ("Garden State"), Kevin Smith (''Jersey Girl''), Todd Solondz (''Happiness''), and Tom McCarthy (''The Station Agent''). So, if anyone can help me... what is so great about NJ? What has it done for its country? What seperates us from other states and creates our unique identity? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

new jersey produces the most influential bands, has the best shows, pits, women, i could go on, but its almost 7am. time to slave

The Jerseybag

A Jerseybag is not always literally a douche from New Jersey, although there can be obvious connections. Like, well, being from New Jersey. But a Jerseybag is actually a state of mind: a cultural cocktail of swill reared in the big-hair, Bon Jovi arena rock concerts of the late 1980s and post–Dice Clay cries of male scrotal grabbing.
:D

The HEROIN is the best thing bout NJ we got some of the greatest and purest heroin in the whole world, You want some good dope move your ass down to NJ you will be one happy dope feen among thosands of other heroin feens!:)

GTFO, you aint real jersey then. You hate everything but hunterdon county? Thats like the shittiest county there is. Na i cant say that cuz theres prolly a whole bunch of equally shitty counties down in south jerz, but hunterdon? What the fuck is there? I cant even think of nothing that is there becuz its so shitty. Everything good in jersey is either down the shore, near philly, or in passaic, essex, hudson, union and bergen county. How you gonna hate on newark? How you gonna hate on atlantic city? The fuck kinda shit is that yo. You prolly one of them rich jersey kids that loves to rep jerz but hates on everything that aint a upper class suburb in jersey.

This is an old post but you and me got the same attitude, lol. Thats that jerseys all about. Hunterdon county? I consider that part of pennsylvania. South jersey does have equally shitty counties, i went down there for a school trip years ago and there were people with confederate flags hangin from their pickup trucks... I was like..this CANT be jersey why arent these people shot yet? The areas that you said are the the real jersey. Nothing puts a smile on my face like driving past that huge oil refinery in linden along the turnpike. A couple miles later you got newark airport, nyc skyline is visible to the right. Thats when I know I'm almost home right where I wanna be.

Not so many acid freaks in Jersey huh? More so a downer crowd it seems.

I think its because NJ is so fast-paced, people need to slow down. People have a lot of pent up rage due to overcrowding and traffic (god i love that feeling) so we need something to calm us down from time to time. Of course it could just be the overwhelming amount of heroin available. But then again if NJ wanted meth it would be here in a heartbeat.

If you want a life experience, live a couple of years in New Jersey.

I think it's so special because the entire state is so diverse. We have everything from the worst ghettos, to some of the richest/nicest towns to live in, to hill-billie towns and then just regular middle class towns. If you stop and think it's really amazing how many different types of towns/people fit into little New Jersey.

I have to agree that North Jersey is the best place to live. You are so close to everything. I've lived in North Jersey all my life, and I would never trade it for anything in the world. Yea sometimes it smells, and sometimes you hear some really shitty news, but in the end, Jersey is the place to be.

And I must say, I am 100% a Jersey Girl. I have NEVER and WILL never pump my own gas =D

You Know You're from New Jersey When...

...you recognize or can relate to at least 10 of these:

You've been seriously injured at Action Park.
You know that the only people who call it "Joisey" are from New York (usually The Bronx) or Texas.
You don't think of citrus when people mention "The Oranges."
You know that it's called "Great Adventure," not "Six Flags."
You've ordered a hard roll with butter for breakfast.
You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.
You've eaten at a diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 am.
Whenever you park, there's a Camaro within three spots of you.
You remember that the "Two Guys" were from Harrison.
You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen, and you know what town Jon Bon Jovi is from.
You know what a "jug handle" is.
You know that a WaWa is a convenience store.
You know that the state isn't all farmland.
You know that there are no "beaches" in new Jersey - there's "The Shore," and you know that the road to the shore is "The Parkway" not "The Garden State Highway."
You know that "Piney" isn't referring to a tree.
Even your school cafeteria made good Italian subs, and, you call it a "sub" not a "submarine sandwich" or worse yet, a "hoagy" or a "hero."
You remember the song from the Palisades Park commercials.
You know how to properly negotiate a Circle.
You knew that the last question had to do with driving.
You know that "Acme" is an actual store, not just a Warner Bros creation.
You know that this is the only "New..." state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (like, try ...Mexico, ...York, ...Hampshire (doesn't work, does it?).
You know how to translate this conversation: "Jeet yet?" "No, Jew?"
You only go to New York City for day trips, and you only call it "The City."
You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich.
You consider a corned beef sandwich with lettuce and mayo a sacrilege.
In the 80's you wore your hair REALLY high.
You don't think "What exit" (do you live near?) is very funny.
You know that the real first "strip shopping center" in the country is Route 22.
You know that people from 609 area code are "a little different."
You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton - that's for out-of-staters.
The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school or local bar.
You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls.
You can see the Manhattan skyline from some part of your town.
You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.
Every year, you had at least one kid in your class named Tony.
You know where every "clip" shown in the Sopranos opening credits is.
You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of Willowbrook Mall.
You've eaten a Boardwalk cheesesteak with vinegar fries.
You have a favorite Atlantic City casino.
You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.
And finally...
You've never pumped your own gas

some of these just make me say... why the rest of the world doesn't know what this is? haha

^ Is there really THAT many people of Italian decent in New Jersey? I mean, you have your Gino's/Gina's ( people who are guido's but indeed, have no Italian in them, its sad.

I love New Jersey because its geographical multifariousness. I mean, I can go 30 miles in one direction, and be in impermeable woodland without a pupil or house in miles, yet 30 miles south(just an example) I'll be in congested traffic in a urbanized area. 45 miles from that area, I could be resting on a beach soaking up sun. There isn't too many place like that where all these possibilities come into play.

Theres mad italians, wat are you talking about, its wat makes us so great! guinea pride
