This is something i have thought about. also i dont have these kittens yet so dont fear i wont starve them or anything. lol. Im rying to get all the information i can before i make any decisions.

you can't own another sentient being as your property, forbid it to go out of your house, prevent it from seeing others of its species...

but i understand having pets if they are free of movement, of choosing to leave...
in another words, in the country in an open house, if they choose to stay

i posted for some time on a vegetarian list (vegelist.free.fr) where several people had cats to who they only gave vegan food.
they all said it worked fine with the vegecat supplement.
they sent pictures and the cats looked healthy.

feeding cats "vegecat" is not any less legitimate than feeding them cat food.

in both cases, you're forcing them to eat what you give them, not the food they find by themselves.

the important is that the food you give them has all the nutrients they need, which is the case for vegan food supplemented with vegecat.

that these nutrients come from minerals, vegetables or animals has no relevance what so ever as to if they are eligible or no.

I have an indoor cat but she never tries to leave (she can always come with me if she wants and sometimes she does, she generally follows me around) and she can eat any of the food that I eat...I basically let her choose what she wants to eat.

I can't imagine she would have a better life on her own.

Phil, organic cat food is def the way to go I think. I need to look into it myself.

vegan: i understand your sentiments. im going to be adopting a cat that is injured or a cat that was abused and already domesticated with no survival skills in the wild. if i dont take them in they will be killed and if i do i would be saving them from death.

Phil, I think it's great that you are choosing to share your life with a feline companion. I am slightly saddened that some people are too self-righteous (others might call it convicted) to enjoy the love and affection cats can give. I do not perceive my relationship with my cat as master and servant; rather more as human mother and feline son. They are amazing creatures, incredibly intelligent and affectionate and I am convinced that I would not be here if it were not for my Neko-kitty. I can predict without reservation that your life will be happier with a kitty by your side.

Now, that said, some of the responses you've gotten in this thread are (imho) unnecessarily politically correct, while others are blatant bait. I'm taking the middle road.

Cats are indeed carnivores.

I know of a company that makes pet food that is certified kosher. My router is acting up right now so I can't look it up, but even though you don't subscribe to the Jewish faith, if you are familiar with kosher meat slaughtering processes you can be confident that the food you'd be feeding your pet comes from humanely killed and minimally processed animals.

I will post the link to the kosher pet food company I know of that does mail order from Florida as soon as my router stops being a little bitch.

As a vegetarian (I will eventually go vegan) my opinion is to feed the cat/s meat. I don't really have anything new to add on top of what had already been said but a cat is a carnivore - eating meat is what it does.

I'm sure there are alternatives to buying tinned cat food - try asking your local butcher for any slightly out of date etc. meat that is just going to be thrown out anyway.

Oh and the P.C. label is "Companion Animal" not "Pet"

cat's need meat. if you have problems with the industry. feed them meat by means which you find acceptable.

The oldest living dog was fed a vegan diet. Dogs go well with a veggie diet.

Just make sure you research well wether or not your pet will survive a vegan diet.

If you were refering to me about nagging that i dont want to feed my cat meat than look again. Also what you are reiterating has been said and better by other bluelighters who calmly expressed there views. No one is hurting you with there words. If you have an opinion express it but once is quite enough and in a better manner please. If i had wanted to eb yelled at or have my belifes questioned i would have posted. this is what im going to do please disuade me. but having not typed that....... thanks everyone for your responses. i defiently feel that there is more to this issue that previously thought. i would be appreciative if, like mariposa, anyone with interesting links about this subject of conversation would post them here. and know that it is helping me through this difficult discision time.

I think it should just a decision of either getting the cat and giving it meat, or not getting a cat at all. The vegetarian diet doesn't sound like it would be fair to the cat. Disagree if you want.
