I'm on a 20 a day habit since about 8 years...

I was wondering how many of you stopped cold turkey?

How many stopped using patches/gum...?

How many stopped using with help from wellbutrin/zyban, or chantix/champix?

maybe mods could make this into a poll....

Ill add other for the people that used acupuncture or cognitive therapy and the like.

i have severly cut down to 2 cigs a day, i normally bum from a buddy at work because i know if i buy a pack it will be gone in half a day

I've only been smoking for about 2 maybe 3 years and smoke maybe 5 or 6 cigarettes a day. Sometimes I can go a few days without cigarettes but I end up craving them after that and other times I can't go 3 hours without one.

I've tried the gum and patches, I find the patch to be more effective but it gave me weird nightmares at night, definitley reduced cravings but I didn't follow through with it because it's so expensive, I just did a month with them and ended up going back to smoking.

The gum generally tastes like shit unless you buy the name brand ones and they reduce cravings but for me they weren't as effective as the patch.

I was on wellbutrin for a while and it helped a lot with smoking. It didn't completely kill my cravings but when I would smoke a cigarette i'd smoke like a third of it if that and then just wouldn't want it, I think it made me feel nauscious to smoke too. If you stay on the wellbutrin I could see one quitting because it definitely helps with cravings and if you pull out a smoke you're not really going to enjoy it and probably will end up being done with them.

Good luck to you, Im gonna try to go cold turkey after this pack, only 2 cigs left.

I managed to quit cold turkey and during one of the more stressful times in my life. It's difficult, but possible.

A person in france mentioned really bad nightmares on those patches too

can anybody who stopped cold turkey tell us if this is a symptom of nicotine withdrawal or caused by the patches themselves?

I really would like to try Chantix, but my psychiatrist won't prescribe it due to the risk of it causing depression/suicidal ideation. Would I be incredibly stupid if I bought it over the internet? Do you think it's worth the risk (considering that smoking WILL kill me eventually if I don't stop)?

I have managed to quit in the past using Nicorette nasal spray. I think this product is superior to other forms of NRT, due to the high rate of absorption. It takes some getting used to though, as it burns.

I'm willing to put my life on the line that it's the patches. A lot of other people i talk to who've tried the patches report the same. And I've had to go times without cigarettes and I don't remember any nightmares.

One nightmare i remember most was that I was a huge like 30 foot black spider and i was searching for meth with some of my friends who were also spiders. I don't really do meth, I did it years before that dream and then just recently, so it's really weird that I dreamed about meth.

In fact if I remember right, about 90% of the dreams were drug related. nicotine's action on dopamine seem likely to be causing these nightmares. I could just be a druggie though lol.

Sept. 4th will be a year since I quit 'cold turkey'. After countless times.
Anytime i used another form of nicotine delivery (patch, gum, etc) I had wild dreams also,,,The only drug (quitting aid, beside nicotine) I took was Zyban (Wellbutrin) , and it never really contributed to killing the craving, but it did give me a bad taste in my mouth. Smoke tasted saccharine sweet.

I tried chantax myself for about 2 or 3 weeks, at first it was ok, you DEFINETLY have ZERO mental cravings, its all about your willpower, which was awsome.

Then, after about the 2nd or 3rd week came the extremely vivid, crazy, mindfucking dreams. An example -- I was walking around my house with an axe with blood dripping from it, and I'm axe murdering my whole family, chopping their heads off and bagging them up, next thing i know im wide awake in cold sweats in my bed.

Another, I had a dream I was being chased by the police and god, god killed everybody and the police ended up being angels sent from hell or some shit to kill me before god did, that one i dont remember very well, i just remember it was fuckin nuts, God was the the angel with crazy ass wings in Diablo 2 lol (i play too many video games)

After all of that, i was like FUCCKKK this, I cant deal with these fucking dreams, I stopped taking it 2 days after the axe murder dream.

But if you can stand the dreams, its awsome, no cravings, all about will power. like i said i didnt have a cig for 2 or 3 weeks straight, and I smoke a pack a day.

i quit cold turkey about 2 years ago...the key is not being around other who smoke for a while..also find a good hobby to take ur mind off ciggarte dont think about it...i just smoke weed now...but for some reason when i see other smoke around me i bum a cig take a feew puffs and then toss it i hate ciggarte its worthless if ur gonna ruin ur lungs why not get a nice buzz out of it

I smoked for 26 years then I heard of a hypnotist from a friend that said it worked for her (she started smoking again) So, I tried it. I swear it was like a switch was turned off in my head. that was on february 5, 1993. I haven't smoked a cigarette since that day. The best $39.00 I ever spent.

i smoked for like 6 years. then quit cold turkey, i still smoke weed ofc, but ciggs just taste horrible and dont do anything for you imo, everynow and then if im wasted enough ill smoke a menthol but ill take 2 drags and realize why i stopped smoking. ( cuz ciggs suck. there the governments way of taking your money and years off your life man, dont fall into it STOP SMOKING )

I've tried the gum, the patch, the inhaler and zyban with no luck. I had high hopes for chantix, but the suicides have put me off of it a bit. The most useful thing for reducing cigarette cravings is fresh calamus root, but it is not available year round, so I end up smoking again when I run out:\
