that's what i hear the most from people. i've quoted my own machines i've put down on paper after searching for the components to fit my usage and it definitely came out a lot cheaper than factory models that were inferior in most areas. i'm just a little rusty on my building at the moment, it's been a few years since i've tinkered properly and having a decent little toolkit would be a start as well
i won't be doing any video editing so a grosly powerful video card isn't necessary - i watch most of my torrents through my television as well. mainly just photo manipulation, logo designing in photoshop or adobe or whatever program i desire. i don't game either.
i just spilt a little coffee on this laptop before and i thought it nearly died on me so i'm definitely going to have to get something in the coming week or two. a backup of all my files is in order too, luckily i did it not too long ago so there's not a huge amount to catch up on.
toshiba or asus are my desired brands from electrical stores.
