The Story of Music starting now on BBC2 (might be finished if you're in England - think BBC NI runs later, but it'll be up on iPlayer soon I'd say)

Howard Goodall 6 parter on the development of music from ancient times..

Watched it earlier (took several attempts, mind :|) and is good enough. But he's made the exact same series at least three times now. This one may have slightly higher production values but I do wish he'd change the tune, as it were. He's done this stuff to death over and over. I wish he'd just focus in on a particular aspect and go into some detail instead of redoing the entire history of music in every fukkin series he's done. We get it. Prehistory we don't know, plainsong, minor changes ferra while, folk, opera, classical/baroque/etc, blah, blah, blah.

Facinating stuff but he's in dire need of new material cos he's been doing the exact same series for over ten years now :\

^ ah but Sham i hadnt seen any of his previous stuff, so I really enjoyed it and learned a lot about music :) theres a new audience every time, don't forget. It was cool to see him literally writing music on that bit of perspex to what ever tune was playing, I've heard people say its just another language but it wasn't till I saw that it truly sunk in. I'd love to be able to write & read music, just look at the sheet of paper and hear the tune in my head.

I'm watching the story of Colin McRae. Must be very sad for his friends and family.

Spot on Shammy (as usual).. Hadn't seen it when I posted.. I'm hoping the later episodes will break some new ground...

I hope you have a plan in place for when your laptop finally frazzles - does whoever's gonna fix it have your number etc?

If it turns out to be fried altogether, I'd certainly throw a couple of quid in the bring back Shambles fund - the stuff I've learned from you in the theology thread alone is worth it.

Not saying it ain't great stuff, b&w. It is. But is identical to all his other series in almost every way - right down to him showing how musical notation works in some kinda onscreen stylee. This one is nicely shot compared to his earlier (identical) series though so will be watching nonetheless. The man knows his stuff inside out so can hardly blame him for ramming the point home now he's got a comparatively primetime, big-budget kinda series... But he really does know his stuff so wish he'd expand on specifics instead of doing the basics over and over and over :!

EDIT: Lappy woes are hopefully somewhat under control thanks to some very fine EADDers, 3ISqueegey. One in particular on this occasion but was one of more than one... Is a somewhat awkward subject given it's essentially begging from near strangers so will simply say I <3 EADD <3

That aside, I have high hopes he'll move on a bit this time around as he's covered as much in one episode as he usually does in two or three and this is a six-parter, I think.

same. he's a ridiculous effete looking type.

But i think she was on about doing Mugz in a batman suit too, so anything's possible.

Lolz, no I wasn't STOP CAUSIN' TROUBLE ;P

I was on about Adam ... :p

And what does effete mean? that's a new on on me.

I watched both episodes last night. I loved it. Dunno if it's cause the first one was pretty much a total retelling of the stand up routine at the brothel and every line was kinda familiar, but I was cackling loads. 2nd episode was good too. It's definitely Jim Jefferies goodness anyway <3

Of course this means It'll probably get cancelled after 4 episodes or something ( 8) ) but I really hope not.

Yas. This is queued for viewing as soon as I've had a smoke. I was worried it was going to be shite.

I watched "The Fountain" the other night and loved it!
It's likely one of the few films that will pass my "romantic detector" as it starts off so.... Just bizzar but all the tales tie in together.

I would certainly recommend it to you all :)~<3

Panarama is on now on BBC1 regarding the whole disability assessment thing. eh, sad stuff

Sam Poling investigates the Government's expensive welfare reforms that aim to get disabled people into work, and asks who is really gaining from them. She reveals that some private companies are benefiting financially from these reforms despite only being able to get a small number of disabled people back to work, and speaks to charities that believe the most vulnerable in society are being failed.

^ Ack. Don't even want to know about those pricks at the moment. Absolute arseholes. This new system is fukkin ridiculous - making you jump through hoops purely for the sake of it. Getting sent to see people who have no idea what to do about you just so the Social can say they're "doing something" even though they're doing nowt but create endless new beaurocracy and redtape and pointless shuffling of deckchairs on sinking ships. Must be costing a bloody fortune to the taxpayer whilst simultaneously taking money away from people who need it most :\

Good film that, Monsta. Wasn't convinced at first but grew on me.

Watched first episode of that new Brian Cox series earlier. Nicely shot and will hopefully get a bit more interesting as it goes on. First episode was somewhat basic to say the least. Gotta start at the beginning though, I suppose. Didn't seem to be as many soft-focus shots of him looking all whistful at stuff as the last coupla series he did either.

Saw that recently, Ben. Thought he came over terribly. In fact he often does. He's far better at just saying his piece than when he's interviewed by anybody with half a brain. Or even worse when he tries to debate somebody with a bit of a clue (thankfully he mostly only debates idiots if at all). I tend to agree with most of what he's saying there but he really does get kinda flustered when challenged. The flat-out mockery of the interviewers firm belief in flying horses cracked me up though :D
