Have recently been enjoying Great Artists in Their Own Words on iPlayer. Is basically just another run-through of the various movements and artists of the 20th Century but with added archive footage of each talking about their own work. Is a good whizz through the basics and nice to hear from the actual artists now and then instead of just the usual talking heads (although there are those too, obviously). Found a coupla folk I was previously unaware of too. Goodgood.
First episode is pre-War stuff from Picasso and Matisse through to conceptual and surrealist stuffs of Du Champ and Man Ray. Second episode goes from WWII (Pollack, Bacon et al) up to mid-60s pop art (Blake, Lichtenstein and so forth). Nowt earth-shattering but some great archive footage all the same. And lotsa purdy piccies.
