The travel thread

Why the fuck won't it let me post that massive reply I just typed but it lets me post this !!!!

Couch surfing sounds shit to me. Too much of a chance of meeting and getting stuck with wankers. ;)

Meeting friendly locals from all over the world that you'ld find difficult to meet any other way sounds shit to you? People who can show you the city the way a local see it, take you to places which locals go and not just the usual traveller hangouts, people who know the city inside out. That sounds shit to you?

OK then. 8)

CouchSurfing looks like a good way to get laid internationally.

It's not a dating site mate. My mate mistakenly see's it as a way to get women, surprisngly it never works out and he's always dissapointed.

Don't have a car to get to any of the meets, and hardly any of them are in Bristol

Want to vouch me?

Public transport. Must be a Bristol group though mate.

And no I don't want to vouch you, I've never met you so it goes against everything couchsurf stands for. If you want to get the most out of CS instead of just thinking of it as a free bed you'll need to put the effort in. Get in touch with folk, locals from Bristol or in places your going travelling and arrange to meet for coffee / drinks, soon you'll have met loads of folk. Also keep an eye out for local meet ups or events happening when your travelling. You can meet LOTS of folk in one night and be vouched by them all.

Bah.. while the flights to Singapore with a stop in Dubai has dropped in price by £50, the flight with no stops has gone up by £200!

Why haven't you bought flights yet or sorted out passports / jabs etc when you're planning on going away this month? Is this actually going to happen or be something you keep putting off for ever.

I prefer breaking up a long flight by having a stop

Fuck that just makes the whole journey longer and more tiresome. Quicker the better with flights.

nah I wouldn't be disappointed, I'd just see it as a bonus if I got laid.

And you think everyone on there is going to provide the above????

Right......8)

The aim of the website is for travellers to meet locals and where possible provide them with a couch for the night. It works, it's been proven. It's a major success story.

You change with experience and having to do it. A lot depends on scheduling too, and on departure and arrival times. Although to be fair, this is more relevant when staying in hotels and/or on business rather than kipping in hostels or on axe-murderers sofas.

I don't see what difference it makes whether your flying for business or pleasure or where you are staying. Flying / travelling is tiresome I'm sure we can all agree especially when crossing timezones and experiencing jetlag. Why prolong the experience.

OK, 1 example. Flying back from Dubai, there is a flight that leaves around midnight that lands at Gatwick about 6.30am, with an hour stopover in Qatar. Or there is a direct flight which arrives at Gatwick at the same time, but leaves Dubai around 2am. I always take the flight via Qatar, as on the first leg i have my meal. I get off for about an hour, have a couple of vodkas and a couple of ciggies, then sleep for the whole of the flight home. Which to me is a much better option.

Also, I try to travel overnight rather than during the day. Who wants to waste a day of your trip on a plane? And the flight goes a lot quicker when you are asleep!!!

Edde, if you're just travelling in South East Asia, then your grand and a half might just be enough for 4 months if you lived pretty damn modestly, and the pound gets stronger in the next month or two. Add in Singapore and Malaysia, n start paying slightly more luxury prices or doing activities which cost, and it might get a bit harder. I'm not saying it'll be impossible, no way... it'll be an experience at least, you can always use a credit card as backup and do some coldcalling to beg a bit of cash.... ;)

You do have to bear in mind the weakness of the pound at the moment tho, as well as the fact that lots of the places you're going are pretty humming with the tourist trade, and prices aren't as low as they used to be. Somewhere like Phuket, the locals know how much westerners can afford and still view it as "cheap", n trust some people really splash their money out there (to all the wrong people of course...) n push costs up.

It's worth considering you "might" have to try and change flights, and make sure you have some emergency money to do this, as companies like STA kinda rip you off.

Sounds like a fucking good experience though, you'll have a wicked time! I'd scamper out of Singapore asap though, cos it's gona drain a fair bit of cash, and from what i've heard it's not the most exciting place! :)

Aye Singapore is expensive, my mate spent £500 in one night recently, just on booze.

Heard quite the opposite from everyone I know who's been, well recommended.

^ It's defo not overly exciting, but there's things to do for a few days. Not el cheapo though.

I worked out that I have just over 3k if I work two more weeks, get week in arrears and lump sum holiday pay
