The travel thread

eDDE, you checked out flight prices again? I was pricing up a Dubai trip in Feb with Qatar airways and it was a lot cheaper than usual- about 30% off what i have paid before.

I live on Mindanao in the Philippines (and have a second home on Cebu also in the Philippines) but travel often. In 2008 I was in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Luzon, Cebu, Mindanao of course, Israel, US...This year I plan on Cambodia again (I spent 3 months ither ein 2008 nd try to go each year, my favourite foreign country), HK again, Israel again, but also wish to go to Madagascar and some of the South Pacific islands.

To the OP, if you are used to roughing it you can live on less than 5 US a day in Cambodia, and are not into drugs or illicit sex (hahaha). Laos as well, Nam is more, Thailand is rather expensive in comparison.

The BA flight is the only one with no stops and is still the same price, there are however more flights, Singapore airlines are slightly cheaper, but only by £75 and the return flight is 1 day and 10 hours :S

My longest flight earlier this year was... 13 hours I think? It grinds a bit, but I personally don't find flights too bad, as long as there's some music and videos to faff around with.

Slightly less fun when I was flying Khatmandu to Bahrain; all the Saudis on the plane started drinking tripple whiskies at about 10am, and didn't really stop. I'd basically not missed my flight by a miracle (long story.... i was running late, then all of KMD was on strike and I had to scream my way through blockades, then I had to run to the airport, then they changed my flight times lol), and I was just starting to fall asleep when the Saudis started getting merry, then this extended Greek family sitting near me all got up and proceeded to have a full blown "debate"/argument right next to my head. It was kinda amazing in some ways... ha actually, the flight to London later on had this awful bloke who made his woman cry and wouldn't stop harassing her and swearing in her face for hours, it was well depressing, although he did get the message and t'fuck eventually....

Trapped in a tin can at 10km, eh? :D

What other websites are there like Sta Travel, where you can book a return flight and have the return leg leave from another airport?

I can fly return to Singapore for £500, but I want to fly back from Bangkok

eDDe, i got a good deal from Trailfinders when I last flew to Dubai. It was at the front, however.:p;)

Dial a flight can also be good. Sometimes you can get very good deals if you book one nights accom through the travel agent as well.

Long haul flights are the work of the devil.

not a huge fan myself but if you get a plane with tvs in the back of the seats and you are able to just get pissed then its not so bad!

plus the feeling of actually arriving at your destination after say 20 hours of travelling on planes and airports is amazing in my opinion!

25hrs from Melbourne. 3 Hours sleep. 9 hour time difference. Not fun at all.

Its nice to get a say in here, without spadey shooting you down... he'd say .. well I hade a 36 hour flight once, and i was complete fine after it, I dont know what your talking about and neither do you

I wouldn't do Aus again without a proper stop over. Unless some other fucker was paying and i was flying business or first.

I'm off to Sydney on the 12th, stopping for 3 hours in Abu Dhabi. I'm just gonna stuff myself with sleeping tablets and sleep through it. I was trying to get opium for the journey, it lasts 12 hours and when on the stuff you're quite happy to lie in bed the entire time...

The kid: Was it that bad?

probably. i was about 36 hours from sydney to home. 4 hour wait in BKK and 2 hour wait in LHR. should have stayed a couple of nights in BKK in hindsight. :|

total nightmare.

I just got bored really easily, mainly as the in-flight ents was not working properly. And i got into a drinking constest with a elderly maori couple who drank me under the table in about 2 hours (they downed each can of VB in 2 gulps), which left me dying for a ciggie and needing to piss every 20 mins.

I swapped planes in Bangkok for the flight to Perth, and then suffered a hangover for the rest of the trip.

I travel a fair bit of long haul, and find sleeping is the best way of getting through it, so your sleeping tablets might be fine.

WORD OF WARNING: Be fucking careful about taking any drugs of any sort (including stuff you can get over the counter in the UK) into Abu Dhabi. You'll be doing serious time if you get caught with the tiniest amount.

Yeah I've vowed never to do a longhaul flight again (more than 15 hrs) without a stopover again. One trip flying from Lon - Melb I got sick on the plane, was coming down and developed an ear infection. Only stopped in Sing for about an hr, then it was back on the plane again. :X

Since then when flying to UK or Europe I've stopped in Asia somewhere on the way there and back. Makes the flight that bit more bearable. Valiums do help though.

what about if you have a prescription? for valiums, for example. not that i want to get into taking valium, but for future reference. ;)

i have had them on a flight before and they make a world of difference.

also: nicotine patches are a requirement for me on any flights longer than a couple of hours, especially since you can't smoke in UK airports now. johannesburg > LHR > ABZ without a single opportunity for a smoke... bad.

If you can show a prescription then it should be ok, but i also think you need a letter from the doctor as well.

There are so lists on-line of what is allowed. Anything with codeine is ultra bad. Opimum is also frowned upon. ;)

He's right. You can get done even if you have nothing on you if your piss tests positive.

You can smoke in Jo'burg. In fact they have a very nice smoking area with a bar! :)

How many ciggies do you smoke a day?
