The travel thread

Each to their own, i guess. But having some decent work abroad looks very good on your CV. And you can have plenty of fun even when you're working. Granted, fruit picking etc is shite, but getting decent jobs and really emersing yourself into local life is very good.

Aye it looks good on the CV but I don't want to go travelling for the sake of my CV. It's not even a consideration.

And you can have plenty of fun even when you're working

That's a lie! :p

getting decent jobs and really emersing yourself into local life is very good.

You're only getting involved in the work environment though. Doesn't sound good to me.

Well in one job I got paid to fly around Australia doing some presentations and basically getting pissed and mashed up every night. That was probably in the description "fun".

And got invited to lots of parties, and went clubbing lots with work mates and their mates. Got much better drugs that way too!

At the end of it, i couldn't have travelled for as long as i did without working.

I spose it has some benefits but personally I think working would bring me down and take away the feeling that I was travelling or on holiday.

Definitely a bonus in that it allows you to stay longer.

Did you visit anywhere else bar Oz on your travels? No wee jaunts to SE Asia mainland or Bali or anything? Also I may have asked before but did you check out a lot of Oz?

All of Oz except Broome and other places in NW, all of NZ and then about 3 months in Thailand. Lived in Perth, Sydney, Queenstown and Auckland for fairly long stints.

If you've been travelling or a long time, stopping somewhere like Austrailia to work is a great idea and actually a welcome break. I know I was craving a decent bed, cheese and wine big time after 9-10 months going through India/SE Asia. I got a great little job for 3 months in Melbourne.

spade, you just hate the idea of work full stop.

it IS possible to work abroad and enjoy it. Angola doesn't really count cos i was offshore, but my time working in the US, Norway and Germany has been awesome. getting to know the locals (you're working with) properly isn't something you can do as a tourist, cos strangers are only after your money.

I've been thinking about doing VSO for a while, my employer will give me a years sabbatical. Think next years going to be the one to put the wheels into motion. The sons were a bit shocked at the idea of me not being here for a year - like not enabling them to live the lifestyle they've been acustomed to on my salary.

Bless them 8)

Anyone done VSO?

Cheers Shambles (morning dear - how're you today?)...

A shiny travel thread to play with! Nice :)

Afternoon, Kate :).

I'm just dandy as it happens. Bit tired after another night of not a lot of sleep, but a couple of lines of peevee for lunch appear to have helped the situation :).

I'm sure if you search for "travel" in EADD you'll find dozens of travel threads. In fact not many threads last more than a couple of pages without Spade somebody bringing up travel in some fashion. Enjoy 20-odd pages of travel-based goodness, Kate :).
