The Travel Thread - Second Destination

Albania/ Montenegro I would say dude, although I think that the Carpathians alone make some of Romania worth visiting. The part that's traditionally always been Hungarian, until the Germans and Ruski's fucked it up last century. Lot's of history.

Thank jude <3 :). I'll definitely keep this in mind. Btw Hungaria-proper is also on the map for me, if briefly.

Where do you recommend I go in Albania and Montenegro?

Thailand. Seeing as he's been living there.

No prizes for you that's for sure. ;)

Yep! :D.

Quality!

All going to plan I'll be arriving in Sydney just as the Sydney Festival starts, it'll be like Edinburgh Festival all over again. :D

Just found some nice deals. Air Asia are cheap cheap!

Can fly from LDN to Kuala Lumpur for £244, KL to Jakarta for £25, Jakarta to Bali for £40, Bali to Perth, Australia for £68. Total = £376.

Spend some time in Oz then Perth to KL on way home for £113 and then KL to LDN for £113 again.

Total flights = £600. Bargain!

This is in December / January btw.

Ay ay ay!

Phoned my dad & explained above mentioned ^ exceptionally good deal. He's not keen. He says it's too much hassle. I don't understand his argument as it's not any hassle at all. I just book the flights online instead of paying a travel agent over the odds for the privelege. Flights he'd been looking at were £1600 (stop overs at different places than originally planned but neither of us are that bothered about where we actually go as long as we go somewhere) these are £1000 less and we go to more destinations.

Have you bought them? Do you just want your dad's approval? Tbh, sounds like you're getting a great deal, IME there's very little benefit to buying flights through third parties. If you want to change them you have to pay the airline a fee anyway and the travel agents aint that helpful. Get the internet flights and some decent insurance and fuck STA n all that lot!

One thing you should consider is that flights bought in Asia will be cheaper mostly than ones bought here, even if it's not significantly in advance. You may be locking yourself into a plan which isn't hugely flexible through getting them all sorted in advance. That said, it's a pretty damn good deal, so....

Sometimes i've got much better deals by using travel agents than straight off the net. This is especially true for flying business (Trailfinders can be very good), although i guess this aint too applicable in your case.

I reckon it's worth getting loads of quotes before booking.

I thought you were going to LA though, the place of your dreams? Your flight plan seems to miss out that? (or am i being a bit thick?)

just uploaded these pics that i took on various planes during my brazil trip;

As my old man is financing this part of the trip and travelling with me (he'll leave in Oz and I'll stay there) I need him to be up for it too. It's not just me going otherwise this would be booked already.

On the flexibity issue, that's not a problem, my dad only had 6 weeks off work so not much point in open ended flights etc. May as well book them for fixed dates and just stick to them, a week in each place on route to Oz would be fine, then a week or two there before he flies home. His reasoning for not wanting to do this keeps changing, first it was too much hassle, then it was he'd been to these places before (Bali, KL) then that Jakkarta was dodgy and dangerous. They are all flawed arguments though and he contradicted himself as the route he suggested as an alternative was Singapore, Bali, Oz and he's been to all of them several times already. And it was much more expensive. The reason for scrapping the London to LA to Fiji to Nz to Oz plan was because of cost. :\

I dunno what he doesn't like about the idea. But he's paying for it so if he wants to spend more on going other places then fine, I'm happy to go wherever as long as I end up in Oz.

I thought you were going to LA though, the place of your dreams? Your flight plan seems to miss out that? (or am i being a bit thick?)

Flights were working at £1.5k per person on that route, bit steep.

And I never said it was the place of my dreams just that I wanted to visit, I still think it'd be good despite everyone saying otherwise. Even if it's not I'd like to go and find out for myself. :)

I would recommend NOT going to Bulgaria, the people are rude, abnoxious, arrogant, unhelpful, unfriendly and will attempt to scam you whenever possible. I've only visited Sofia, Bourgas, Kraimore and Sunny Beach though, but all were the same and none particularly amazing or nice.

You must have been very unlucky in who you met, the bulgarians are fine in my experience I've been there a few times and met lots of em because one of my step-parents is from there. The women are a bit nutty but generally the people are nice and friendly. Perhaps they just hated you. =D

There's certainly much better holiday destinations, but its only a small place with barely the population of london, can't expect to be astonished. Nevertheless its got some cool little cities and there's plenty on offer plus as with much of eastern europe its cheap cheap cheap (I think i paid like the equivalent of 50p a pint!). Not to mention the lethal bulgarian homemade rakia, destroyed me that did; they are really heavy drinkers over there, beer isn't even considered alcohol its just a drink, only spirits count as actual alcohol.

Please no one take spade's opinions as fact, the bulgarians really are alright! :)

I did actually say that I met TONS of cool couchsurfers and that it was just the folk in tourist / service jobs which were absolute cunts. Must be a condition of them getting the job. :D

Cheap booze indeed. :D

Oh right, thought you were generalising all of them from that post, my mistake.

Their attitude to booze is simply fantastic, I must say.

Looking at various flights & holiday options and all the airlines are doing cheap as fuck flights to Tel Aviv, under £300 return regardless of what time of year.

KLM, BA, AirFrance, El Al are the ones I've looked at if anyones interested.

That's cuz no fucker wants to go there. Prob get decent deals for Kabul, Chernobyl and Dundee at the moment too.

I'm tempted. :D

My plans are changing by the day, decided yesterday I can't wait until December to go away nor for my dad to figure out what he's doing so I'm off straight to Oz start of September. :)
