The Travel Thread - I am lovely and respectful to all in my path PLUR <3 xxxxx

I've done voluntary work at home yes, for Barnardos and others. Event fundraising stuff. Never volunteered abroad but plan to this time doing some good free stuff I found working with mountain tribes, eco projects, building bamboo huts and shit. Fuck aye!

I don't tend to give to beggars that often, if anthing it'd be my spare change. What's this got to do with anything.

MF Global require a fuller profile than your emails presently provide.

Minimum 4.5 months hopefully at least 6 definitely would like to be away longer. I signed up for the TEFL 3 times, couldn't be bothered first time, went out and got pissed the night before both other times and slept in. I can either do a course out there or wing it if I want to go down that road.

Sounds good, was just talking to the bird tonight about how much we miss Thailand. I completed the TEFL course and decided there is no way I could teach english every day. I fuckin hate kids to start with- Best decision I made, Sydney is amazing.

Actually Charlie has a very good point here
In what circumstances do you give to beggars? When you do give, with how much do you part?

Exactly the same question I asked sevral months ago and something I continue to think about
Have you ever considered that by giving an individual money for nothing you are in fact adding to their grief and unfortunate plight? That you are creating a class of people who are entirely reliant upon the philanthropy of foreign tourists.

Is it not more satisyfying to equip an individual with the skills and ability to survive by their own means?

Also, with regard to the actual act of giving charity; how do you decide who is deserving and undeserving?

Something for you to give a think over.

In the specific example of cambodia; the kids and other people begging tend to work for a criminal gang. If you decide to give them money it would help nobody but the grand daddy pimp who puts them out to work each day. The children are kept out of school to beg on the beach.

What you think happens to them when they arent young and cute children anymore? They end up sucking some fat british cunts cock. Im being particularly brutish here, but hopefully it will have some impact.

Same mate. Hate kids, no patience, not good at explaining things, my English skills are terrible as I can't spell for a start and my grammar is horrendous. I'd be a terrible teacher. Don't even want to teach it just seemed like a good idea months ago, now it seems terrible. Working on my internet businesses / money making ideas instead much more chance of them being a success than me being an English teacher.

Found ye.

Right, I'm actually fucking serious about this. It has to be done. As long as this money comes through then there's absolutely no excuse not to & I'll fucking hate myself in the future for missing the chance.

I just need to figure out how to do it, where to go etc. I don't have a fucking scooby where to start. I know I want to go to Cambodia. Bangkok seems like the best place for setting up basecamp if I'm going to be out there for months but I'm a bit para about their drug laws. At least some drug use is going to be an integral part of most days, even if it's just the odd joint. I don't fancy jail too much.

I'd like advice on good places to go. Whether Bangkok is a bad idea or if I'm just being too para about the drug thing. But the main thing I'm looking for is where to start. Like, people who have done this before - how did you find out how you find out about things? lol. Where did you start? How did you manage to figure everything out logistics wise? I'm not really wanting someone to tell me exactly what to do, more tell me how I find out for myself what to do. Give a man a fish n that.

Also with the timing of this, if it goes to plan, I could well be out there over New Year. Which would be fucking excellent. What's a good shout for New Year? I might even be able to meet up with some of my mates, who I've not seen for ages, for NYE.

ptch I think South America would be better overall for you (drugs, travelling, going out etc), but you would need to learn some Spanish.

I like that almost everything I've read says $s do the talking. It's like "You really need this, there is no way around it, you will be in serious trouble without it... unless you've got $2" lol.

Ghostface - South East Asia appeals more to me tbh. Cocaine is the only thing that SA is winning on that I can see. I've tried to learn Spanish about 5 times. Failed. Plus there's a good chance of me being able to arrange meeting up with some of my actual mates for a few weeks if I'm in Thailand etc.

You'll need to fly into Bangkok anyway if you want to go to Cambodia, no direct flights from UK to Cambodia. You're better not making a solid plan before you go but might be an idea to go buy the Lying Planet South East Asia guidebook and have a read / look at the pictures to get an idea of places you might want to visit and things you'd like to see and do. Just take all their advice with a pinch of salt.

You can do drugs in Thailand but just don't be buying it off sketchy locals in the street offering it to you in tourist areas or people on the beaches at parties. Also don't buy it from seemingly cool bar owners (usually reggae bars) as it's often a set up and after selling it the cops will just happen to do a raid. Common sense is all you need. If you're on a remote beach on an island where there's no cops and your guest house happens to sell drugs (a lot of them do, I know one which has your standard SE Asian drugs such as weed, mushies and opium but also sells E, MDMA, LSD, Ket, 2CB and DMT etc), it'll be OK. If you meet another traveller and he offers you a joint then it's likely fine just don't stroll down the street smoking it.

Bangkok is the best city in all of SE Asia, most advanced, best transport, best infrastructure, best nightlife, most fun, most to keep you entertained so if you want a city it's a good choice but it's also huge, busy, dirty, polluted and noisy so keep that in mind. A lot of people prefer Chiang Mai in the north, more laid back and less busy but I thought it was a bit boring, not the same buzz as BKK and whilst there's loads of activities to do nearbye (sky diving, elephant treks, hill tribe visits, trekking, rafting, mountain biking, zip lining etc) the city it's self doesn't do it for me and the night life is not nearly on the level of BKK. Or the Cambodia capital Phnom Penh if you want drugs and guns aplenty but it's small and not as much happening. I'd not recommend Saigon or Hanoi in Vietnam, places are hell holes.

You need to decide if you're setting up base in BKK or travelling around though, doesn't make sense to have a base in BKK and then be going off travelling round SE Asia. You'd be spending money on an apartment or whatever in BKK AND on accommodation and that when you were on the move. SE Asia is a big place, takes a while to get round it. If you've got money for 5-6 months then I reckon fly into BKK spend a few days to a week, head down to the islands and island hop around doing diving, snorkelling, boat trips, fishing etc, back to BKK then visit Kanchanaburi for the war history and river kwai,up to erewan waterfalls then boost up north to Chaing Mai for the mountains and all the other activies I mentioned earlier. From CM head east and take a boat down the mekong into Laos, visit Vang Vieng for tubing, booze and drugs (best fun ever) then Luang Prabang, fly to Northern Vietnam to Hanoi, go visit Halong Bay, work your way down Vietnam stopping at Hue, Hoi An, Nah Trang, end up in Saigon, go visit Cu Chi tunnels (Vietnam war) and shoot AK47s at targets painted like Americans, bus it over to Cambodia to the capital, get smashed out your tits on drugs and kill a few cows with the rocket launcher, go visit Angkor Wat, back to PP then down to Sihanoukville with maybe a visit to Kep and Kampot too. That can be done quick as fuck in 1 month but would be better done in 2-3months. Once all that's done you've seen a good bit of SE Asia. Head back to Bangkok, get an apartment or long stay guesthouse, and go fucking wild for a few months!

ptch I think South America would be better overall for you (drugs, travelling, going out etc), but you would need to learn some Spanish.

South America is a bit more adventurous but also a bit more daunting for first time travel of this sorts. It's a HUGE and slightly scary place at times and there's way more crime, it's also more expensive. It's not as easy to travel round as it is in SE Asia where everything is geared up towards travellers, you don't even need to leave your hotel 99% of the time in SE Asia to get a bus to your next destination as the company will come pick you up. I <3 South America but I think SE Asia is better for the first big trip like this. Plenty of drugs and night life in Asia.

I speak a little Spanish but most people I met out there didn't speak a word and could get round so it's not actually essential plus it's easy as fuck to learn...compared to Thai and Khmer anyway, those are tricky. There's pros and cons for both destinations but I think SE Asia makes more sense for PTCH.

Cheers man.

Aye that sounds top. When I said "set up basecamp" I didn't mean continue to rent a place there while I went elsewhere. Just meant have that as my main place to stay. Spend a few weeks there, checkout & go to a different country for a week or so, come back, rinse repeat. I have no fucking clue about the logistics of doing that though so the way you've put it does sound better. Chill for a bit in BKK, then go off on a fucking mission round all the mad places, then back to BKK to actually "live" (well as much as possible, stay put anyway) until the money runs out.

I like the idea of Bangkok being "huge, busy, dirty, polluted and noisy", just like home lol. I like busy noisy cities so it sounds cool. Been watching a few videos on youtube & the accommodation, particularly in Thailand, doesn't look anywhere near as jakey as I was expecting for pretty reasonable prices.

Seems like Cambodia is better for a quick visit, week or so, as oppose to being the main point of the trip. Fuck me, this is going to get a bit daunting lol. Athough I am all for the idea of just having a very basic plan worked out & seeing what happens once I get there. Could end up absolutely loving some place that I'd never even heard of before & deciding to stay there for weeks. Any plans that too set in stone would fuck up the fun of it I think, that's also the good bit about planning to do this solo - there's no cunt to decide they disagree with what I want to do.

I take it it's quite easy once you're there to just decide "Fuck it, I'm booking a flight to 'x' for next week"?

Did you find it quite easy to find people to kick about with? Dunno if I'm really into the whole pre-arranged meeting with a random cunt from the internet type thing.

It makes no sense to go back and forth to BKK, better to do a more natural loop that takes you around SE Asia and just start and finish in BKK. Accommodation in Thailand is generally fine. If you're a cheap cunt like most of these gap year backpacker wankers are you'll pay like £3 for a bed a night and it will probably be shit with a shared bathroom and no hot water etc. Pay a wee bit more and you'll get a place nicer than your house that gets cleaned every day and has a fridge and a tele, nice ensuite etc. I go for the latter. £12 a night my hotel was in BKK and it was really nice. Two swimming pools and shit. That's considered expensive by a lot of the cheapskates out there, thought it was a bargain myself.

Flights with Air Asia are cheap as fuck, Bangkok to Cambodia for $50. 1hr compared to 13hrs+ and a load of scams on the bus at $5. I opt for the flight on that route. Just travelling around in country, round Thailand (and even from Thailand into Laos) better to take the bus and trains. See some scenery, cheap as fuck and the trains are good, got sleeper cabins and stuff for the over night journeys + have a restaurant carriage that sells beer. From Laos into Vietnam I flew as it's a hellish 24hr + journey on a 'party bus' which blares music the whole time and breaks down often. Vietnam into Cambodia a few hours on a bus, easy going. If you want to take flights you can book the day before online with Air Asia, they go anywhere you'll want to go.

You can meet tons of fellow travellers whilst out there if you want to or you can completely dingey them if you want to. Finding company isn't hard, getting some time to yourself sometimes is. All the travellers tend to congregate in particular parts of the country or in one area of the city / town / island so if that's what you're after you head there (i.e. kowsan road in BKK or Haadrin beach on Koh pahgnan). I get quite bored with hanging about with backpackers now but I used to love it the first few times I went travelling. They just all seem to have the same stories and be doing the same thing (pretty much what you're doing) so you have the same conversations all the time. Last time I spent most of my time with locals or an English expat who's lived out there for years or an Aussie boy who was out there working online. Locals are easy enough to meet if you try or you can use some social networking sites to speak to some before you go, worked out well for me in Bangkok.

Aye doing a sort of loop round does sound better. I'm definitely not into staying in £3 a night shiteholes. Fuck that. I might be there to see some interesting shit & do some fucked up shit but I'm also there on holiday, I want to be able to chill out, not try to sleep in a mocket room with 25 backpacking wankers. Spending my whole time traveling & complaining about how I hate people that go traveling should be amusing.

The backpackers would probably bore me quite quickly, but I'm fine with my own company for the most part, just sometimes would want a sqad to go out boozing with etc.

I kind of know the answer to this, but taking a laptop would be stupid aye? What about taking hunners of gear? I'd rather take hardly any clothes, buy cheap shit & just throw away what I can't be fucked to carry lol. I don't fancy having 9 bags on my back whenever I try to go somewhere. If you can get a bed for $3 then a t-shirt must be about 10p.

There's not that many hostels in SE Asia as private rooms in guest houses are so cheap so you won't need to share a room with anyone you don't want to. I'm the same as you, I don't need company all the time, can be happy enough cutting about solo, I went out to bars and clubs dozens of times by myself in BKK even and had a great time. Makes you more open to speaking to random people. When you put down a base in BKK you'll meet other people doing the same, somehow you always end up meeting other people doing the same as you (like the English and Aussie boy I knew) and you'll get to know some locals too no doubt. Can go out boozing with them. Failing that head out to an expat / british / irsh pub if you're really dying to talk to some cunts from back home.

A lot of people take laptops these days but they take up a fair bit of room and if you're backpacking about you'll not have a massive bag (well actually a lot of people do have daft sized bags) and you're gonna worry about it getting nicked, lost, stolen etc. I'd only take on if I was just going to one place to stay there and needed to do some work (which will hopefully be my next trip) not to travel around, and it's be a netbook. Clothes wise I take 1 pair trainers, 1 flip flops, 2 pairs of jeans, 3 shorts, swim shorts, weeks worth of boxers and socks, 7-10 tshirts, couple shirts, hooded top and stuff it into compression sacks, hardly takes up any room. I travel pretty light, bag is small enough to take on a flight as carry on and only weighs about 7kgs fully packed with all clothes, toiletries and other stuff you need. Tshirts are cheap (£2-£5) but laundry is even cheaper (£1 for everything you own, washed, dried, pressed) so you can do either.

£1 for everything you own, washed, dried, pressed

Outstanding. That's the worry about having too much shit to carry dealt with then.

I thought the laptop was a bad idea, just that you seem to see so many pictures, or videos with people travelling chilling at a pool with a laptop, seems to be reasonably normal for folk to do it. Plus I can see myself spending a great deal of time doing absolutely fuck all but lazing about, at which point the laptop would be quite handy to plan shit & that. But you're right, I would really worry about it getting nicked, it's not exactly a £100 snider that I've got.

I could easily get away with that amount of clothes if I can get someone to wash them all cheap. I had visions of a big fuck off backpack twice the size of me, with another 3 bags hanging off it lol. Probably because the last folk I saw pictures of their luggage when going to Thailand etc was 2 birds. They'd have had the hair straighteners n shit with them haha.

Aye most folk get carried away and have bags bigger than them that they can't lift. Fuck knows what they put in them when I ask it never seems to be much but my bag is tiny in comparison and I always seem to have more clothes than most people. There's cheap laundries everywhere, just hand the bag of sweaty minging clothes to an old wifie and she has them washed within a few hours.

Apart from clothes, toiletries, your camera and phone with chargers and maybe a book you don't really need fuck all else. Most guest houses in SE Asia provide towels too, I think I had my own last time but never used it once.

Quality.

I'm reasonably good at traveling light. Although I've never tried to do it for any significant length of time. I've went on holiday before & had my mates wonder where my suitcase is, or think I've left it in the taxi lol.

I need to make a point of telling everycunt that I'm going to do this now, so that it's harder to back out! There really is no excuse as long as this cash comes through.

Fingers crossed you get the dough, this sounds like a fucking plan.

See if you can grab yourself a cheap netbook somewhere and take that, maybe? It's not like you're going to be titting about with Ableton on the road and you can get them on ebay for under £100. No idea if they're actually any use at that price/spec though.

Definitely the thread I'm looking for.
Where should I go on holiday next year? Party places and whatnot.
Thinking Malia or Magaluf, but mainly 'cause I thought I've heard before that Ibiza's hyped up more than it should be?

Intending on saving this year and going to a few places next summer! Just unsure where, right now.
