The Travel Thread - I am lovely and respectful to all in my path PLUR <3 xxxxx

Hey I might be out there the same time as you Crackhead. We can hang out together :)

Aye, you can be my target at the RPG range =D

This is a travel thread. Seeing as the furthest you travel is to the off license you should probably exit the thread now.

Lol, Tuesday bottle of wine #1 has obviously been cracked.

You should get a kindle PTCH. You can download a thousand books and leave them on there, so that'll shrink the book collection you'll have to carry :D

2 x 500ml bottles of Old Rosie this evening so far, and now they've been drunk it's Tetley strong only. I have early morning driving duties 5 mornings out of 7 most weeks, and I take my responsibilities seriously. Nice try tho.

I have 2 pending trips abroad. Now that my sis has had a transplant I'm a litttle more free to roam. caring for 3 people makes it hard to get time off and go abroad.

I've got one pending trip pencilled in to NYC (around January time) and one to Austrailia that's not yet been planned .
NYC is for about 5 days, not sure about the AUS one because I'm not going until my cat has popped her clogs (which'll be in the next yr most likely, since she's 21 and dodery). I think I'd actually prefer to go to New Zealand tbph, but it's not my choice since I'm not paying.

Anyone been to NZ?

Ive been to oz. I've heard that NZ is gorgeous.

Couple of Thai huts for yus.

Actually they are bit rickety and manky.. You can get much nicer ones on the Islands in the South.

If you are going traveling, make sure you go to vang vieng in Laos ... http://wikitravel.org/en/Vang_Vieng

You can buy bags of weed, magic mushrooms and opium from bars. All of which is losted on their menus.

They have this island that is decked out in fairy lights and hammocks in the evenings which is open until the sun comes up.

I lost a lot of brain cells in that place.

Went to Goa a couple of years ago and stayed in huts. They were fine for a couple of weeks (save for the sparking plug sockets and fuck-off roaches), but after that I was dying to be somewhere that wasn't 40 degrees+ 24/7.

Reckon I'd want to have an a/c hotel to get my energy back every now and again if I were to travel for any length of time.

A/C all the way like, worth spending a couple more quid in a place like Asia to have it.

Did you go tubing? And by tubing I actually mean get in the rubber ring and float down the river rather than just stand at the side of it in the bar like 90% of the people who go and claim to have done it. :D

Tubing is one of the most enjoyable travel memories I have, was blissful floating down that river surrounded by mountains and rainforest with a Beer Lao in hand. :)

Finally decided to start booking a quick trip to thailand next year , I want to do a full few months around asia but that will have to wait until ive got some real money, only a flying visit really to see someone but I might as well make a quick holiday out of it, probably only 2-3 weeks maybe more as I dont have the funds currently. Planning on landing in Bangkok then having a few nights there and eventually making my way up to Nakhon Phanom stopping at places along the way. I dont know a single thing about the country, or where to visit just going to see what happens in-between. Going to be staying in the middle of the jungle on a farm for the last week or so, all accommodation is getting sorted by someone else so I just have to worry about flights and some narcotics/food money.

The "rural accommodation"

You know a Thai person or you've got a mate from back home out there?

Looks pretty rural alright. :D

Nice one Mattnotrik, the photos deffo make me want to go somewhere like that.
Just imagine while you are chilling out over there, everyone here will still be stuck to the grindstone plugging away just to survive.

My dads lived out there for a good 8++ years or so finally gonna go see him I think get him to show me around, says can have a hut for however long I want so might aswell make the most of it, No AC or anything though think they have about 6 or so of the huts then a few large ones for cooking etc and a modern sort of tree house and some other modern structures, couldnt find any larger pictures though but you get the idea, hopefully going to go when its not too hot. The more modern ones where built quite recently and I think he rents them out but they are on a completely different site to the rural farm.

Looking on the map its almost directly on the border with Laos think he said just a river separates the two, going to be from one extreme to the other though form bangkok to there.

Anyone here did the likes on the Inca Trail in Peru - or similar? Sounds like something I'd like to do within the next few years, but just want to make sure it isn't some hyped up ploy?

It does look like exactly what I'm looking for. Been to Spain a bit too many times now and would really like to see somewhere properly different, this seems like a way to do that but with the guide means I wont be completely stranded. Would probably do one of the harder/longer routes too just since it's not something I'd expect to do again.

Haven't read loads into it, hence the question. Just what I've heard so far sounds good. :)

Does your old man live in one of those huts too?

t's on the border with Laos so should be an interesting place, mix of Thai and Lao history and culture. According to Wiki also a hot spot for the Laos communists fighting the yankees during the Vietnam / American war so could be some interesting history there.

Thailand is ALWAYS hot. Average temp is around 30 degrees and VERY humid.

It's definitely not just some hyped up pish. I couldn't do the trail because I went to Peru in February and it's closed to let it regenerate at that time of the year so I took the train journey to a town at the foot of the mountain, got up at 4am, in the dark, rain and cold, the following day and trekked up from there. Takes a few hours compared to the 3 days of the Inca Trail. Hard going especially when you and your mate are doing it in shit shoes and have no torch, almost fell in a rapid running river that would be certain death but probably nothing compared to the actual trek it's self. Was knackered when got to the top but then climbed up Wyna Picchu too which is the adjacent mountain and gives you the birds eye view of Machi Picchu you usually see in photos. Photos don't do it justice, it's fucking EPIC, it'll blow your mind. When we got to the top of Wyna it was misty and cloudy, so we sat for 2hrs waiting for it to clear and when it did a shiver ran up my spine, never seen anything like it before. One of the best things I've done on my travels. You'll not regret doing that. Peru is brilliant, so many amazing sights, great culture and history, the best people, good food (except the guinea pig) and drinks (pisco sours!), loads to do. GO!

Yeah we went tubing and stopped off at a few bars on the way down the river to play on the zip lines and stuff ... Unfortunately, on one of the largest rope swings I slipped and did an epic belly flop in front of a huge crowd.

The only other thing we did there was walk up to the caves with the Buddah in it.

Did you stay there long?

About 5 days. Think was down the river 2 of those just drinking and another day tubing then chilling out in town the other ones. Beautiful scenery eh?

At least you never broke anything slipping off the zip lines as so many people do.

Amazing scenery! ... The first night we took shroomz we watched the sun come up over the mountains.

Haha, no broken bones, just a very bruised ego.

Yeah took shrooms and smoked opium / drank opium tea. Shrooms freaked me out a bit, took too much. Ended up boshing loads of diaz to chill me out but had been drinking all day and ended up totally fucked.

Where else you go in Laos / SE Asia?
