From what I've heard the m249 was great because of it's ability to operate with either a belt or Box mag but it's heavy. FN SCAR-Lmk in 5.56 & in 7.62 has taken on some interest and even though the MK16 in 5.56 was discontinued the 7.62 is still being used. Also the SCAR fires from a closed bolt till the barrel gets hot enough to cook off rounds, then it automatically fires from an open bolt, crazy..
General Dynamics has a contender the MK5 which is an improved upon Ultimax. LWRC is also continuing with the M-16-A4 and the HK 416/ 417 (5.56/ 7.62) now use the short throw piston system instead of the direct impingement gas tube design.
The m249 is def being phased out though.
Just from what I've read they are phasing the M249 out in favour of the IAW....
lol people will be getting annoyed that we're turning this into a weapons debate..I very seldom mention my time in the army or ny Regiment or role as people seem to get upset ..the way I look at it though, is I fought and many of my comrades died to give people the freedom to hate me for it....so it's all good.
Yeah, the main drawback IMO of the AR platform is direct gas impingment and the fouling that causes. The H&K 416 using a short stroke gas piston (same mechanism is in the AK) is a huge improvement...Id have to look into the IAW more to hsve a better opinion on it's pros and cons though.
One thing to note with the M249 is that while it does feed from either a 200 round belt or STANAG magazine, the housing where you insert the magazine is quite unreliable and sometimes we would have trouble seating the mag properly...it's really just for emergencies when you are out of link.
7.62 versus 5.56 is a whole other debate that I actually feel quite strongly about...In Afghan we were often engaging at 700, 800 meters or more and 5.56 just didn't cut it..hence the introduction of a DMR role using a 7.62mm platform...also the 5.56mm round is designed to yaw and tumble with the base breaking off causing fragmentation and a superior wound cavity, but in practice this was very unreliable and the round tended to just be going so fast that it zipped straight through targets without tumbling or fragmenting...meaning unless it hit something vital, the person didn't go down straight away even if hit multiple times....if things have deteriorated to the point that I actually hsve to start shooting people then I want them to go down
now and stay down..not get up again and keep shooting at me...if someone is trying to kill you then having them die from their wounds an hour from now is no good..I want them to stop now...
Sorry for long rambling post...I don't often get anyone to talk to about this on forums...all the bottled up shit is just flowing out now ..sorry again folks
