The Snooker Thread. V. "Sport" for pacemaker patients and the deaf

Cheers for that, will have a gander. Fu has a good record agsinst Ronnie, i think he's one of those players Ronnie has too much respect for. And thats possibly why their head to head records are pretty equal i think. In some ways i think i prefer the old cocky as fuck Ronnie, and just having to play against Ronnie would be enough to make most players fall to bits, unable to string anything together as they were playing against the fearsome reputation and not the balls.

It seems Trump has let his talent go to his head, acting like he's already an O'Sullivan of the game. Tbf though i heard that is going to enter a lot more of the piddly little tournaments this year, both for his ranking points, and w/e limited prize money he can get.

Do you know when Ronnie is on next?

(where did your post go RJ:?)

Anyone else watching the Champion of Champions on ITV4 this week? O'Sullivan vs Fu at the moment, Ronnie looks in pretty good shape (probably enticed by the £100k prize for 3 days work). There must be a big firework display nearby in Coventry at the moment too, because you can hear it in the auditorium, must be quite off-putting!

My post is still there (for me at least). 6—0 last night, nearly didn't bother switching back after the mid-session interval!

I remember a couple of year back Trump claimed he was only going to play the big three because he could earn enough money from that. Then he promptly got knocked out in the first rounds of those tournaments. I guess he's playing some of the lesser ones now because he blew all the money he made in his one successful season on fast cars and stupid shoes. Also, the ranking system is now based entirely on prize money so people who don't play as much drop down the rankings much quicker.

Shame about Trump really, he's very talented but his attitude is terrible.

Not sure why there isn't any snooker on today though?

Don't think so! If I had and deleted it (which wouldn't surprise me if I had and forgot), I'd be able to see the deleted post, since I've still not been stripped of my mod powers...

Not the most exciting of matches on today but I'm watching anyway (the joys of being a long term sicky). All of these on ITV4.

Robertson vs Carter on now.
Walden vs Allen at 3pm.
Winner of each play for the last semi final place at 7pm

I'm guessing Robertson will go through (although Walden was in good shape at that Chinese "International Championship" last week). He'll play Trump in one of the semis tomorrow and Ronnie will play Ding. My money is on a Judd vs Ronnie final, Judd was on fine form in his group matches earlier in the week.

Great to see Ali Carter back after his battle with lung cancer, and that his ranking position was frozen whilst he was being treated (like they did with Paul Hunter a few years ago). Funny that he forgot his suit and has borrowed Ricky's for this match. So what happens if Ricky wins in it this afternoon? Will they have to swap waistcoats between shots this evening? :D

Ali Carter is one hell of an unlucky guy, first Crohns disease, now cancer, all this and he cant be much older than 30. I remember Paul Hunter's last match at The Crucible, he got a huge emotional standing ovation entering the arena, lead by Jimmy White, you could see why everyone loves Jimmy, it was a very bitter sweet moment, the poor guy barely had the energy to stand, but he wanted to compete right to the end. It's a cruel world someimes.

Is Ronnie on tonight? Could do with a dose of snooker fireworks. It seems like a long time since the world championships, so im quite hungry for more by now.

Nope, it's the winners of this afternoon group matches (both 4-0 whitewashes, so Robertson vs Walden) to see who will play Trump in the other semi.

Ronnie will be playing his buddy Ding at 1 pm tomorrow, I assume the other semi will be in the evening and then the final Sunday, but my handy Android app (well worth getting if you like snooker and have an android phone), but it's not showing matches with unknown players at the moment which is odd - used to say Trump vs Winner of Match 17 or whatever.

Final starts in 5 mins (ITV4 still), Ronnie vs Judd, should be good!

Anyone else been watching the Ruhr Open on Eurosport this weekend? Nothing particularly exciting about it, but I can't believe the finalists have had to play four matches today though!

Edit, Murphy just potted an amazing black off the last red for a 147!

Edit 2, Also, don't forget that the UK champs start on Tuesday! :D

Edit 2 is good news, looking forward to that.

I just hope that Ronnie wont have to play Selby "The Torturer" again, he'll have to come up with some new strategy for playing him, Selby seemed frankly unplayable in parts during that world championships final, rarely gave ronnie a glimmer of a chance, but when he did ronnie mostly cleared up/potted enough to win the frame in one visit.

That's one of the very few matches i can recall where ronnie was playing very well, was mentally disciplined and focussed and highlly motivated. It is very rare indeed for ronnie to loose a match when he's ticking every box like that.

I think it may partly be the 'slow opponent' thing, i know ronnie has matured and become much more stable since that infamous match in which Ebdon's slow play practically caused ronnie to meltdown, gouging at his own face with the frustration of the whole thing at one point. 8o

TV coverage of the UKs starts in 10mins, on BBC then BBC 2 and red button. There is also Eurosport 2 coverage from 2pm, not sure if they're showing different matches or if it's just a euro broadcast of the BBC feed (most likely).

Hopefully the Jimmy White - Ding Junhui match will be shown somewhere.

Also hopefully Ronnie's foot will be a bit better, he's broken it running in the woods, and said earlier in the week he'd pull out if it wasn't better in time for his match on Sunday.

Jimmy White has released a new book, discussing amongst other things his relationship with alex higgins and his battle against cocaine and crack. That's going on the christmas list. ;)

Ronnie still hasnt officially withdrawn due to his injury, i hope he does play. But a broken foot certainly wont help, it sounds a bit reminiscent of alex higgins bouncing round the table on crutches after he had fallen / jumped out of a 3rd storey window or something shortly before a televised tournament back in the 80s. Alcohol was to blame for that one iirc, he didnt judge the height correctly and thought that his fur coat would cushion the landing. :o 'Bit of a lunatic' indeed.

If he does play, is Ronnie going to hop round the table on his one good foot i wonder. :o He'll probably be more annoyed that he wont be able to go running for quite some time, than about its effect on his snooker abilty..

He's playing! Just started now. He didn't limp much on the way into the auditorium, but he's not looking especially comfortable around the table yet.

The Jimmy book is very good, more honest than his older autobiography. Worth a read!

Trump looks to be in fine form and up for putting on a bit of a show this afternoon on BBC 2. Already seen a couple of nice exhibition shots in the first frames.

Good on him, i love those kind of flair shots, where the white ball arcs with all the spin if thats what hes been doing. :D

Since Jimmy White no one else plays the game like that. Even Ronnie is kind of far more clinical and understatedly elegant and stylish in his brilliance, he doesnt do anything uneccesarily flashy, show offy or flamboyant. He's probably too concerned about fucking up those 50p cue tips he insists on using. Even so he's still the most exciting player the game currenly has by a county mile, even if he isnt ourageously showy or flamboyant, like Jimmy and Alex Higgins before him.

Trump is a big crowd favourite but whilst Ronnie's still around he's not gonna inherit the prized mantle of being the crowd favourite. It takes years for that to happen. It didnt happen to Davis and Hendry until they started losing, weird how they suddenly became much more popular when they stopped becoming winning machines.
